Basically don’t tattoo face and hands. Don’t tattoo yourself just to associate with the culture, but you don’t even really have them all over the body. Basically just a show off and don’t be a wanna be. Especially if it hinders your life and your career because you want to look cool.

If I understand him correctly, he’s saying if you come in to his parlor and ask him to tat up your face and neck but have no other tattoos on you, he’s not going to do it because he doesn’t think you’ve really thought about the social consequences that come with having face tattoos. He didn’t phrase it very clearly, but he’s saying he feels he has an ethical responsibility to not be the one to help you ruin your life

Translation: if you ONLY get tattoos on areas that can be seen that will get you discriminated on for a job JUST because you want to be “a person with a tattoo” showing it off it’s a red flag. He’s saying they don’t treat it like it’s special or holds a place anymore, only for views. In the past most were covered but that meant without the fanfare of showing it off, it REALLY had a special place in your heart for it.

I will say that tattoos are much more culturally acceptable now, as a hiring manager i can confirm that obvious tattoos are not a deterrent in my screening process unless they are violent in nature. Seeing a big, dark neck tattoo will make me question your background a little bit but if you interview well and have experience I am not put off by your tattoos. “Job stopper” is the funniest thing ever to me, has never been a problem for me think it just depends on the type of person you are
@tjhenson29782 ай бұрын
Translation: you should save your neck and hands for last. A lot of places won't hire people with neck/face/hand tattoos because it's such a visible spot that can't be easily covered up. They are "job stopper" tattoos. It's best to wait until you have a lot more tattoos before you make a huge decision like that. A lot of tattoo artists won't do tattoo those areas unless you have either a substantial amount of tattoos, or they're sure / they make sure with you that it won't affect your job or living situation just because people are so judgmental. That's basically what he means. It sucks that people are so judgmental when it comes to tattoos and visibly seen ones, and the industry is slowly changing in some parts of the world, but unfortunately people still get judged for those tattoos because they're so visible and harder to cover up. Edit: I have nothing against tattoos and where they’re placed (obvious exceptions being racist/homophobic/etc. ones) I even have some in these placements myself. This is just what I got from this video, and my translation of what they’re saying.

I know artists that won’t schedule a face tattoo sooner than a year from when a deposit is paid. That year is for you to think about it and make sure you still want that ink on your face permanently. These days too many unscrupulous artists will just take the money and tattoo whatever you want wherever you want whenever you want. But if you have NOTHING else it does give off the impression that you're getting tattooed to look cool/so that other people will see your tattoos and not because you really love them. As another artist on here had previously mentioned, having visible tattoos does not mean it is an invitation for ppl to gawk at them necessarily, thus it could just be that person's aesthetic. Placement of artwork on the body as symbolic gesture is also another facet to empower an artwork.

It’s an old school mentality but I agree with him. There’s a level of respect you need to have for the art so you would get at least a few tattoos on your arms/torso/back/legs/feet before committing to anything ultra-visible like hands, neck or face. You have to know for a fact that visible tattoos are right for you. It is almost like “earning” the right to have those tattoos within the tattoo culture.

@@vyndeliagates3437 Thats exactly what it is. In relatively modern times tattoos were held by criminals and sailors, either way you had your career choice. The navy still has a dope tattoo policy but dont get your hands or neck tattooed if you have no skills and want a good career. Even if you dont care about that those places were held for after you've earned it by wearing other ink for a bit. Mostly American traditional style as opposed to say a tribal, sleeves and pieces were earned for achievements and not done in a session or two. Each piece was like a badge and the last earned were your neck and hands. Years of progression and not just a six hour session. Tribal like Polynesian might get a sleeve in a single session but that was also earned through achievements in life. Now people get full/half sleeves for the look, hands and neck first for the look and its sad because most are young and regret it when they learn they have no skills and look unprofessional. Nobody cares about the carpenter with 30 years experience and a full body suite but they care about hiring the high-school kid with neck tats that can't read a tape.

“Job stopper” is the funniest thing ever to me, has never been a problem for me think it just depends on the type of person you are
Translation: you should save your neck and hands for last.

I had probably close to a hundred hours of chair time before I had any visible tattoos if I was wearing jeans and a T-shirt. I'm prob 80-85% covered now but still don't have anything above my neck. Those type tattoos are in my opinion (and most of my generation - born 85) reserved for a certain type of person. You have to earn it and you have to be in a position that it doesn't affect your ability to provide for your family.
“Get outta here Dewey, you don’t want no part of this shit.”
Everyone calling this dude a gatekeeper when he’s trying to look out for you is crazy. Any mf getting a face or neck tattoo as their first tat is beyond dumb…
Trying to live in the past while the future keeps pushing on is dumb. Isn't it time to move forward? We do business with wife killers, but tattoos on the neck and face are the problem.
No it’s not. Because ppl have their preference so you think you sound smart about somebody else’s decision on where they want a tattoo. I do tattoos and the only tattoos I don’t do is a false man that is portrayed as Jesus Christ, penis tattoos and ass tattoos on men. Those are not my area of work so does that make me less of a tattoo artist?
"..when he's just trying to look out for you" - Just like drug laws, eh? No. How about one adult not telling another adult what they can, and/or cant do with their own bodies. If the artist doesn't want to participate that's the artists decision. But this bs about pretending to know what's best for another adults life is dumb. Whether the artist turns out to be right, or wrong its not his place to tell another adult anything about themselves.
@@GeneralBloke23the comment clearly went over your head. What your saying is true but we aren't talking about that
He's not being paid to "look out for you" he's being paid to tattoo art on people. Either stfu and do what you're being paid to do or close down your shop. Nobody truly gives a single fuck what another person thinks about what's going on their own body.
He really think he’s saying something , I’m so lost
He’s saying you used to have to earn face and hand tattoos by having lots of ink elsewhere, which proves you know what you’re getting yourself into. And even then you used to have to wait. I know artists that won’t schedule a face tattoo sooner than a year from when a deposit is paid. That year is for you to think about it and make sure you still want that ink on your face permanently. These days too many unscrupulous artists will just take the money and tattoo whatever you want wherever you want whenever you want. Basically, if someone has face and hand tats and no other ink, they’re a fucking poser.

Depends on where the tattoo is, as the man said..
As Ozzy Osbourne says if you want to be different don't get a tattoo
I think it all depends on placement and how many you have.. grandmas and mother’s and what not, usually have little tattoos that are usually hidden (1 or 2) however like myself, I get tattoos in the most undesirable places. Chest, back, legs, etc. and usually big pieces. So I still believe it’s counter culture for some.. and a trend for others.
Not true. My parents and the majority of my my family are very traditional and conservative. Only 3 of my 70 something cousins have visible tattoos (hands, face, etc) and they happen to be the black sheep of the family SIMPLY BECAUSE they were ok getting visible tattoos
You can keep trying to push that, but tons of tats will always scream "don't look at me, don't talk to me". Especially on women.

he’s not being judgmental for no reason it’s just that most tattooers are just extremely passionate about the craft and try to protect it from people trying to capitalize off something they don’t actually give a damn about tattooing isn’t just a job, it’s a culture/lifestyle and it’s very sacred to us if you’re passionate about tattoos whether you’re an artist or not, you just understand that there’s a way you do things and a way you don’t... hand/neck tattoos are something you earn as you go along your journey getting tattooed plus, for a long time heavily tattooed people were outcasts and now you have people taking shortcuts to appear to be heavily tattooed because it’s popular we take pride in actually being fully blasted and not just tattooed in the right areas to appear it but at the end of the day people can get whatever they want, but to be taken seriously in the culture you gotta actually be about it

I remember when I went in for a tattoo appointment the first time at 19, the guy _grilled_ me for almost 10 minutes. He kept telling me, "Make sure you know what you're doing, this shit can cost you jobs if it's too visible in some sectors, you might have to deal with scandalized aunties (I'm Indian) who see it. Make sure you _know_ what you're in for." Apparently he'd seen a lot of college students regret tattoos within weeks, so if anyone was under a certain age, he wouldn't tattoo above the collar or over the cuffs.
Whoever told people that "gatekeeping" is a bad thing should be stomped.
Nah you not gonna stay in business long acting like everyone’s mommy. If people want it and their sober, no more questions asked
My hands have never stopped me from getting a job
I don't think he explained it well, but he said "someone who gets hands, neck and face and NOTHING ELSE." Yes, it's a look, a different look than was traditionally acceptable or even really possible in legit tattoo culture 20, 10, even five years ago. But if you have NOTHING else it does give off the impression that you're getting tattooed to look cool/so that other people will see your tattoos and not because you really love them. Not saying that's fair, but it's definitely something I've thought to myself before--especially since a lot of younger people who have just the visible stuff done also have a ton of copied pinterest tattoos which will never be cool no matter how much times change.
if you have a neck tattoo but nothing connecting under it...cmon bro. or if you have a hand tattoo but no forearm. why.

As another artist on here had previously mentioned, having visible tattoos does not mean it is an invitation for ppl to gawk at them necessarily, thus it could just be that person's aesthetic. I think the subject matter, composition, and application are all much more valuable judgements to think about when looking at artworks. Placement of artwork on the body as symbolic gesture is also another facet to empower an artwork.
Or just don’t be a snobby prick and act like any and every tattoo is art in inself as well as any other form of expression :) you must be fun to be around :)
Imagine showing this guy to the tribesman that invented tattooing
This man has his own definition of 'comprehend'
So he’s basically saying: getting a tattoo, but not enough tattoos is a red flag
No, he's saying if it's personal which a tattoo is. It should be something private. When someone deliberately gets a visible tattoos off the rip. It's not about art, private memories, values, ect... It's about showing off like a fuck boy. It also is a reflection of a generational gap. Since the early 40's-50's until recently. People literally had their careers end because of a visible tattoo. So making that jump to visible was something you had to really want. It meant more to people. Now any idiot teenager doing too much xanax has one.
This happend to me when I went to get my hand tat. The whole staff were refusing to do it since I only had 3 other tats till the boss walked in and said “I’ll do it buddy jump up”😄😄

Tattooing lost it's appeal in the 90's when it went mainstream. Some where around 1995, it went from something only self-proclaimed outcasts and bikers did, to a trend. Except for this guy, he's unique.
Just get the ink you want, where you want. You don't have to 'earn it' these days. Things have moved on.
i feel the same way to an extent, these artists have traditional values when it comes to hand and face tattoos, like i understand the thought process, but times are changing, and there are plenty of jobs available for people with those tattoos. like come on, hand tats are so fucking sick
True, and i know im very opinionated and judgemental saying this. But dont u judge people on their looks in general. For me thats the case big time and i dont feel bad for it because everybody looks like his personality, it may take longer to recognize for some but for me thats true. The same goes for clothing and tattoos. Things have moved to a point where being an outcast and „anti social“ rebellious is soo very cool and nothing u have to hide, tattoo art in culture is just a sign of that
I agree. The dogmatic "culture" seems so silly to me.
Almost sounds like he's gate keeping tattoos.
Hes rite to a degree especially on young people they really don't know where lifes gonna take them and believe me in some careers its still not there ..I've over 40 tats all have a meaning but iam at a age where it doesn't matter and to be honest I dont give a fuk anyway .
Lmfao I died when I heard him say "tattoo culture"
I laughed when he said “job stopper” as if anyone is actually gonna be homeless due to a hand tattoo
Its called a "warped tour suit"
he said "tattoo culture" ahahahaha
Tattoo culture is a real thing where the wrong tattoos at the wrong place visible prepare to get jumped

@@KK-jt6nj for real
I’ve had my hands, neck, and throat done for over 20 years now. Somehow, whenever people see me with my shirt off they are shocked I have my torso tattoo. Same with my legs. It’s like, I was always shocked by their surprise until I started seeing other dude’s with their shirts off and they don’t have a single tattoo that wasn’t visible. Blows my mind.
Same here, my neck and hands were the last place to get tattooed. I worked in the industry and my boss made me put a transfer of my hand tattoos on every day for a month before he'd tattoo me, to prove I really wanted them.
probably cause things are more expensive now getting something that nobody can see is a waste of money.
It's just because they want to show off
Job stopper is the right fucking word for it.
That fact that you would judge people for getting a face tattoo and nothing else says so much.
He comes from an era where getting tattooed in visible places was earned and ment something. I believe he means younger people now a days only want those highly visible spots tattooed without working your way to what was once earned or was covered last by heavily tattooed people 🤷♀️
Not only that but it also makes it harder for people to find jobs & those that do it because it's trendy end up regretting it then blame the artist for "ruining their life".
That era is gone. I haven’t had an employer care about my tattoos since 2010 lol everywhere I go, I see workers with visible tattoos. My doctor doesn’t even hide his anymore. I get why this was a mindset 10+ years ago but I don’t get why it’s still being pushed when it rarely applies in 2021. It’s giving me “back in my day” boomer energy.
This the best explanation tbh
Exactly. An old school artist tattooed down my wrist on to the top of my hand and it was a big deal. Being that im short and I can hide the tops of my wrists with regular length sleeves, he was ok with the fact it wouldn’t mess up jobs. Love this short!
