Hey everybody! Hope you enjoyed this video about The Black Eyed Peas. Their story from start to finish is pretty unbelievable. From the early days of Will.I.Am. and ATBAN Klann // Behind the Front // Bridging the Gap -- to the transformation with Fergie to Elephunk // Monkey Business -- to the robotic, inauthentic, perfectly made pop music of The END and The Beginning -- back to wokeness with Masters of the Sun Vol. 1. A weird, weird story that I hope you liked.
when he said Uno and Apricot i was like oh yea that’s right i remember them
SAME HAHAHAHA
You're not alone
When he said Uno I was like fuck how could I forget
Sam Gray i was like oh yes the great uno and the magnificent apricot ah yes what great artists
Sad to say that Taboo was the one I always forget, so I just glossed over Apricot, and I was like "Yeah Uno that sounds right."
When they wanna rap they rap. When they wanna make money they make money. It's not that confusing.
It means they're genius. They know what they are doing...
Exactly
And even when they do make money, it's not like they dont care and just sell out, they still maintain a level of good quality
@@Jabersson that's true . They understand pop trends, appeal , and image. The probably knew it when they were underground in the 90s since they all seem to be very intelligent.

Retro The Vapor Lord haha, i definately blinked, but i just moved on after 😂
Lol I was like uno and apricot, sounds legit...
Retro The Vapor Lord it almost flew by me I knew uno was taboo
I was like "oh yeah uno"
They've made enough money so now they can go back and write music they enjoy without struggling financially. Must be a liberating feeling to be honest.
maculka999 u hit the nail on the head. Think it’s similar to what Rihanna did, only she made radio pop hits first then as she gained more popularity/power in the industry, especially with ANTI, made music that she wanted to. Now she doesn’t make music at all. Just money.
@@DaPeePeePooPooCheck you're right. She's an ultimate powerhouse, she turned her name into a brand and at this point she can do just about anything she would like to do and do it her way.
I remember an interview with actor Michael Caine, who said he learned from some other actors that it was ok to do a dumb, fun, blockbuster movie for the money, that it wasn't a betrayal of your artistic values. The reasoning was simple, that big paycheck and the connections you made in the industry would pay later. Now you didn't need money, so you could do a low budget passion project of your own or act in someone else's. And in an industry like the film business, you can leverage those connections to help something else down the line. Black Eyed Peas has just play the music version of the game, they can now basically do whatever they want, and people will listen to it, at least once.
Kai McKenzie I kinda miss her music though

to say "meet me half way" is soulless? i digress, the message in this song is so powerful, same with "where is the love" fergie has a way with her vocals. very convincing. I met BEP half way and im glad I did.
On the flipside i gotta feeling is the most soulless irritating song to have to listen to. Not only did it age badly, even at the time was such an ugly song already.
Kinda genius, they secured the bag and are now chilling making music they enjoy and don't gotta worry about low sales
Agree !!!
@@WeCube1898 How can you agree when their first two album were in a different time period when that was the style compare to their later stuff. A lot the reason why their later stuff took off like that was because they caught the wave of MTV's TRL fan base which a lot of musical acts owe their success too. When The Black Eye Peas put their first two albums out, that's when the industry shift to the mickey mouse bubble gum pop era which we know and love oh so sarcastically.
But it took them so long! They were secure since long time ago. They should have gone back to their sound earlier so we can enjoy real rap. By this time, it will be a greater collection of good albums in our hands!:)
@@cristinalorente2135 Sell outs
nah they just sell out haha
They were socially conscious, went pop, paid their bills for the rest of their life and then went back to being conscious again.
BradPlaysGames Just a theory: Maybe Fergie provides financial and technical support in exchange to join Black Eyed Pea to help her get thru her drug problems
BradPlaysGames They’re never gonna reach the same levels of success again because first they alienated their underground hip-hop listeners when they added Fergee and next their mainstream audience when they regrouped again and started to make socially conscience stuff again
Brendan your talking about (relatively) long timelines. The people who listened to the peas might not have even been born to hear their early stuff, so to them it would be a pop group becoming 'woke' arguably at the right time
Thomas Mckenna Well I seem to be right as their newest album didn’t sell too much. And the timelines literally proves my point, they’ve been doing pop for so long that the hiphop fans are long gone and their 7 or 8 year pause completely took them out of the lime light, their surface level pop listeners who’d put their stuff on in the radio or at clubs are long gone.
thats a W if ive ever seen one
I think the black eyed peas are mad impressive, the whole team is clearly really talented and very goal driven. They made the money they needed so they could keep preaching because they knew they had the talent to get it.
For my Will I AM, Furgie and Taboo I remeber, but Apl de ap is hard to remember. The popular songs are mostly clubbing songs as best way to get heard a lot is a good song people can dance to in the clubs, but Where is the love is my favorite songs of theirs to listen in free time, but know the songs of the E.N.D can play at any party to hype up the crowd to dance and just great way to get the mood started.

OMG IT'S TENMA
Oh yeah, I remember those days
In other news, water is wet
I don't care what anyone says even AFTER they went pop they were still in a league of their own NOBODY was making songs like them, how could they be basic when no songs like Pump it were on the radio when it came out. Say what you will they pushed the boundaries of pop, and they were different than anyone else in the pop scene
I mean tbf all they did was sample an already existing song and turned it into a pop song, doesn’t really put them in a league of their own when sampling already exists and was already pioneered by artists like Kanye west before hand
Michael Jackson's Thriller, Dangerous, History, Bad... all of those albums had several hit songs from the same albums, brother... never forget the king
Yess! Also the classic Off the wall
Difference is that The E.N.D. had 5 hit singles from its first 5 tracks (in a row). Thriller has 6 mega hits but they’re tracks 3-8.
@@ArchoniusXXVII you got a point that no one wants to admit.

tiddleto2te lol, I knew one of them was apple de app but didn’t know which one. And the other, no idea
But they were two entirely different groups, even in title. One was "Black Eyed Peas", while the other was "The Black Eyed Peas" which easily explains the transition in sounds. Two seperate groups, two seperate genre's regardless of the two groups sharing members. Furthermore, "The Black Eyed Peas" didn't drop Fergie, the group "Black Eyed Peas" just simply got back together & began making the music they always had, except this time around they have the association with their other pop group, which I'm sure they hope will translate into a larger fan base. Certainly a larger, but confused fan base. With that, I leave you with a very profound question. What chu gonna do wit all that junk, all that junk inside your trunk? Your answer could have immense implications, so think deep before answering.
Imma make you scream. MAKE YOU SCREAM!!
After much contemplation and pondering I must inevitably come to the conclusion that the only Logical thing to do with said junk is of course get you drunk.
Black Eyed Peas = 3 Members The Black Eyed Peas = 4 Members
I feel like The Black Eyed Peas were ahead of their time in the music they made. They were great because they innovated in music. While their music may not feel "socially conscious", they are musicians at the end of the day. I felt like they experimented with music and got us to the kind of music we look to them for, which is super cool. About the critical acclaim, I feel like critics and their reviews should be taken with a pinch of salt. There have been some great songs that received no critical acclaim but remain cult favourites to this day.

I don't really care on what kind of music they make. They always put their entire heart on every project, their music and lyrics ufff always on point. I won't lie, I miss Fergie ferg in the band, it would be so cool if they would've made Masters of the sun with her, but anyway, they will still succeed even without her, for many years on. Translation is so fucking awesome :3
I miss them when singing with her. And I am happy I still have the chance to listen to their albums every time I want to... Every time I do it, I discover something new. They were so fucking good, and I started to appreciate them when I saw them doing shows, they sang live for hours, and I'm proud of them.

William doesn’t get the respect he deserves imo. As a producer he completely tapped into a sound that dominated the late 2000s/early 2010s remember OMG, Scream & Shout, he anticipated the EDM wave hitting America. That’s why the END album was such a big deal.
My name is Aminé fully agree with your comment.
@EliT ?
Ahm, didn't he steal like over 10 songs? Search that up. It's true. No respect for that.
That’s not saying much, since music started to blow after 2003
Isn't Will.I.am the guy who stole a Daft Punk song, and just screamed it is a remix, cause his mom made him that way?
Tbf I really like the fact that the black eyed piece dipped their toes into a lot of genres. I feel like that makes their earlier albums really interesting. Every song is something different, and it was always exciting to listen to the next one. They were also really soulful
Anxiety is an amazing song.. and if you’re gonna do a video on the history of the black eyed peas at least mention the original 4th member kim hill
I love Anxiety, too... My question for you is, if Kim was an original member, why doesn't she appear in the album covers? I think she wasn't included as the 4th member, in my opinion. She was only a help.
I've never heard it before and don't listen to nu-metal, but that snippet he played alone convinced me it's really good. I'm surprised he called it a disaster
1990's BEP: critic acclaim and 1 money 2000's BEP:weak acclaim and 3 money

I believe the whole "selling out" argument is a false narrative, as if it's easy or a "choice" to make global chart topping hits! This only shows the range of talent of Will.I.Am how he can both make critically acclaimed music and global pop hits! At the end of the day they returned to "critically acclaimed" music which didn't sell as much as their "sell out music" - only difference now is that it's more original since they're not doing it for the money anymore thanx to the stacks they made from their previous "sell out music" so you know it's more real than their first albums!
BEFORE FERGIE THERE WAS KIM HILL. I'M SURE YOU KNEW THAT 🙄
And after Ferie there was Jessica.
The best thing about these guys is that the original members still going strong as friends. loyal and reselient
that's probably a big part of why they blew up. They made party music and the core members were guys that probably would be hanging out and making music whether they were making shitloads of money or not. Usually these kinds of acts are flashes in the pan

I totally agree with you about “Where Is The Love”. It’s pop that rocks and it carries the cheese as perfectly as a slice of gourmet pizza. It’s shamelessly upbeat and reaffirming to the inner human. If I play it right now, it has the same fresh resonance for me as the first time I heard it, what like 20 years ago. It stands as a masterpiece in the genre.
i remember hearing their The Beginning album when it came out, i was in elementary school at the time and kinda liking it at first, but around that time my brother was getting the kinect for the xbox 360 for his birthday and i remember us getting one of my most favorite games of all time as well with it, The Black Eyed Peas: Experience. I remember playing the shit outta that game when it released and seeing many songs from them ive never seen from them but i mainly just played the ones i knew and loved. It was that game that made me absolutely love the album The Beginning and still do to this day, and i remember being surprised about their early records being nothing to the poppy Don't Stop The Party like vibe that i listened to quite a lot back then.
Name every black eyed peas member. Me: *Hit it Fergie*

Haha true
I was like "what?! Since when Apl.De Ap and taboo has changed their names?!"
I tell you, this guys defined my generation of music, I heard their music everywhere growing up, they hold a deep place in my heart.
The reason why Fergie and Will.I.Am are the most popular in the group is because both of them did their own things on the side and had hits. They were also the ones to go solo.
I laughed when he said " my humps goes kinda hard" in the most monotone voice
8:56 Zeppelin IV easily hits that mark. The first 5 songs (actually, every song on the album) are all considered some of the best rock songs of all time. I'm not actually a huge Beatles fan, but Abbey Road accomplishes the same feat with the first 7 songs on the record. Back in Black is definitely up there as well, Joshua Tree, Van Halen, MMLP (not counting skits). probably many other albums as well, those are just off the top of my head
I’d say Black Sabbath’s paranoid or master of reality also hits that mark
I also thought about the first two Linkin Park albums, if i remember right Meteora had 7 hit singles. I mean freaking 7! That's crazy.
I love how it hurts so much to a lot of people not being able to categorize The Blacked Eyed Peas music into a single genere. Why should they stick to a single genere? Why shouldn’t they experiment? What is the problem with going back and forward on project motives or to have any deep motive at all? Do Salsa, do classical, make it in the lab, make it for you, make it with pop singers or with rock singers, why not all at once? 😂 #StopBoxingThinking
Thank you like if you talk abt some of the greatest metal bands that have the most longevity deftones, korn, tool they are loved and still relevant because they experimented they didn’t let themselves be boxed into one category or associated with other bands there first two albums while good were very similar to the point of almost unoriginality to certain rap groups/collectives if they kept only making music like that this video would be talking about how they we a copy or aren’t themselves
Because of you listen to the music, you can tell it’s pretty forced and contrived attempt at different genres not because they’re passionate about them but because they’re trying to cater to more people, hence why they’ll do a Latin song or a metal song or pop song etc…
@Giga Simpson because when you listen to the lyrics and how basic the actual “representations sound” you realise how in authentic it is which is something alfo himself even stated.

I love the APL song... There are many songs where fergie's voice doesn't appear so much or at all, but no one mentions that thing. They are focused on telling us APL and Taboo didn't do anything because of Fergie's fault. They are focused on criticizing those "famous songs" just to confirm they didn't listen to the whole albums.

The "non knowing how to sing basic ass white girl"
All these takes are completely accurate and they're the exact reasons I love the BEPs. They're hip hop taken past conscious rap into alternative/blended genres and then all funneled into pop. All their music is completely surface level, there's nothing deep or elusive about the instruments, lyrics, effects, or themes. It's crowded minimalism, all these really simple elements come together to make solid compositions, Monkey Business is a perfect example of this. The musician in me wants to pick everything apart when I listen to a BEP song, but I usually find nothing surprising or unexpected, just that everything is well composed, well produced. Almost like it's not there for me to pay attention to, I think that's the existential dread he talks about. They don't create any new techniques, nor are they excellent in any one musical aspect, they're just all around good, and they're a well balanced group, plus they target their songs toward as large an audience as possible. They make music that we're gonna show aliens when they ask what music is.
Superb-e analysis of this popular group : Bravo and Happy New Year !

Mentioning Anxiety was something that I thought about when you mentioned nu-metal song of The BEP :)
I just watched this video and fell in love with this channel and the black eyed peas imma check out all their songs
Poor Fergie. She gets all of the blame for the Peas going down, when the rest of the group and the producers are just as guilty as she is.
she's a woman. we couldn't really expect less than people blaming her, unfortunately
@@d_______________ of course, it's because she's a woman.
@@Jackscalfani2 It's not because she's a woman, she just happened to join at the time that the Peas went pop so people decided that this correlation meant causation.
@@lamestudiosinc418 no I was being sarcastic to 6lack petal who said that they're blaming her because it's a woman
Whatever, Fergie sucks. BEP was decent until her sorry ass came along.
It's not because people pay attention to the vocalist. It's whoever has the most stage presence. It's why people remember slash, dave grohl, flea.
Yeah, and why no one remembers that Kurt Cobain guy.
@@NCbassfishing24 lmao right
U really think Dave Grohl is remembered over Kurt Cobain?
@@Rohan_3657 sarcasm
I remember Will Farrell over Flea tbh
You didn't get me with that meme at the start but it was funny. As a kid I was a big fan so of course I remember their names lol. Sometimes when something smells really unpleasant I start thinking "big booty funk, toe jam funk......"
After the Great Recession, they just made songs to help people forget about their current situation and just have a good time and enjoy the moment
1. Applejack 2. Fergie 3. Will.I.Am. 4. ...Tove Lo?
lmaooo i said “William, Ferguson, Light-skinned guy (apple), and fruit guy (i just remembered one of them was named after a fruit)”

Robert California: "Black Eyed Peas is rock'n'roll for people who don't like rock'n'roll, it's rap for people who don't like rap, it's pop for people who don't like pop."

Bingo
Wow... The realist thing ive heard about a group..
That’s could go the exact opposite way...
Get RockRolled lolll
"WHAT HAPPENED TO THE FAIRNESS OF EQUALITY"
To me this was the most successful pop band ever and made some of the best pop songs ever
