"IM READY TO GIVE UP ON THIS DOG"- Dog Owner
Aggressive German Shepherd training done properly takes time. How do you train an aggressive dog to not bark at everyone? This dog is sweet deep down the barking and aggressive behavior. He is overweight, stressed, and protective of his family. His family is sweet, smart, and willing to put in the work BUT what work needs to be done? As always THANK YOU for watching, In every video I answer every one of your dog training questions so don't forget to leave your dog training questions in the comments below!
It is great to hear him mention other people in social media taking a small portion of the video dog training out of context to address how the dog is stressed while bringing down the trainer’s methods. For pet owners, it is hard to see what could be right or wrong for training their dogs.
10000% It's unbelievably unprofessional and wrong. It's honestly sad to see BUT it hopefully gives others an opportunity to see who that person really is and what they care about. Breaking others down in any industry is an immediate sign of jealousy and major insecurities. Imagine if I posted videos of other dog trainers doing things I didn't agree with and that was my brand?
This 💯
I think it is the sad world we live in that people think it is ok to critique every small thing someone does wrong. This dogs behavior changed and that is all that matters. He got to stay with the family he loves and love him because he was getting better trained. It is so hard as a pet owner to decide what is right for my dog when I see so much conflict in the politics of the dog training world. It is something I love about this channel that it does not bring others down by showing clips and critiquing them when they were not there in the moment the issue happened.
Here to second this - after speaking with Tom regarding my dog Roux and then implementing the training we discussed, of COURSE he was stressed at first. And now he actually can ENJOY being a dog and getting to go places and having more freedom and choice because he knows the rules of engagement and is so happy that I am actually leading him now and removing the anxiety of "what do I do" from him in stressful situations.
@@tomdavisofficial This is absolutely unbelievable! Who is the guy who uses parts of your videos to critique you? Can we recommend the guy a psychiatrist for his low self-esteem? I am STUNNED that anyone would take a part of your video and then critique it. Wow! There is NOTHING to critique about your training! You are a MAGICIAN! And you save countless dog's lives!
That first daughter who handled him was really impressive. You could tell she had a natural confidence. When she took Buzz he was very attentive; completely different from when the mom handled him.
YES She just does her shit,
Agree she's a natural. Future trainer!
Legit, she knows how to handle Buzz but the parents arent the best in term of training and he wont listen to them well
Yeah the mom is just scared and doesn't want the dog she's looking for him to fail
Can you imagine? The mom never had a dog and now she has one of the smartest of all dogs. At least the husband has had dogs. You have to be an experienced dog owner to have a German shepherd. Maybe they should of started out with a King Charles Cavalier.
The daughter who removed buzz from the family and did a little short walk in the background has my respect. She’s is really dedicated and you can tell that she really wants this training to pull off. 14:10 to anyone who wants the clip
That’s right
Yeah
Exactly what I was thinking. I bet she’s the one who made her parents go to training.
@@DanielleSawyer yep
I'll make her my guurfwen
I can tell that the daughter has been doing a lot of work with him because when she’s in the background working him, he’s doing everything she’s asking of him. It’s just more proof that when you hold your dog accountable, they are easy to work with.
Its all about how she handles herself, and relationship to the dog, really. Her confidence helps him.
The Dad nailed it when he said of Tom, “He’s not training the dog, he’s training us” 😌 Another outstanding video, consistent, calm, dedicated and again fantastic tone of voice. I appreciate your use of the words teach and guidance, and addressing the negativity of a stern tone in training. Amazing to hear you’re coming to the UK! 😁
Yes! Thank you!
15:03
Yep. 💯 % My Giant Schnauzer took me to training classes 3 times before I finally stayed to "get it".😁 I was going to take her back to the breeder because she was very challenging for me to work with. I'm so grateful neither one of us quit. ❤️
Love how the daughter had an observable switch in her attitude: I'm the boss now. I hope they keep up with the work.
Mom needs to listen ... seriously, said no when asked to hold leash in left hand, wow. She is so tense, needs to relax.
It takes time for sure
Agree. She's afraid and Buzz knows it.
Exactly, you can’t expect results if you’re not willing to listen to the professional
I cant believe she just out right refused, and then wrapped the leash round her wrist to make it tighter. I hope she learns better real soon..
She's scared of the dog and doesn't want it around. She has zero interest in putting in the work. If my wife doesn't want a dog, I would have serious reservations about getting one. It's a big step, not like having a goldfish.
The single most brilliant thing about your work, imo, is your patience. That’s where the magic’s at.
🙏🏻🙏🏻
"He's not training the dog, he's training us" that's the most accurate thing an owner has ever said in these videos. I think that's the most difficult part in dog training: training the owners
I salute Tom on his patience with people. It’s also incredible to see how effortlessly he communicates with the dog. Dogs are so amazing. I love them so much.
he has to, at the end of the day he's training humans more than dogs.
Same here. Love dogs! Especially GS dogs. I have one. She's a handful. Still after a year and a half we continue to train her.
Tom, you constantly and consistently amaze me. My children have learned to read dog body language and I specifically ask them to watch you!!! My 18 year old daughter, who was viscously attacked by our English Mastiff in November, recently started working at a doggy daycare & is more in tune with behavior than all of the other workers b/c of the valuable lessons you teach us. Thank you. We wish we had found you earlier and that things didn't go so wrong for us and Goliath. Every human you educate will eventually share what they learned with others, and that's progress.
Beckman also has incredible videos on body language.
@@Flippokid yea hes the best
And a lot of people really don’t understand that German shepherds are a working dog. They are just like the Belgian malinois they have an intense prey drive and an incredible drive-in general. They should not be pets in my opinion unless you’re getting a temperament tested low drive, German shepherd that would be good for average pet home. People like this they get a GSD just because it looks cool, they get it overweight, then it develops issues like this because it’s not worked. People preach so much that Belgian Malinois can’t be pets but nobody ever considers that German Shepherd‘s shouldn’t be pets either. They need to be working dogs to be completely happy but of course if you have a low drive, German Shepherd they will be happy with daily 30 minute to 2 hours of exercise. My German Shepherd is not a pet and she gets six hours exercise a day because she needs it
@@maryjacobson2372 from all the professional videos I have watched on these two and many other breeds - I completely agree with your perspective, and I see that you understand the complexities and finer nuances of dogs. 💖 I have a herding dog, and as long as I keep him well exercised, he's a wonderful companion dog. I also have a rescued puppy who is amazing with high energy and drive. Again, as long as I train her, exercise her and provide sufficient mental stimulation, she is an incredibly fun pet. 💖 😊 🙆🏻♀️
I love Tom's realistic expectations. "What is the success rate?" Answer: "That's the wrong question/mentality." "Why isn't it working at home after the first couple days?" Answer: "It takes time for you as a handler to learn and for your dog to understand things they've never been taught." I hope this family built some skills because it seems they went in looking for a quick fix like most busy families. The mom's insistence to two-handing the leash was very interesting. I hope Mom gains some confidence too. Beautiful dog, great work.
Yes dogs need continuous reminders and handler needs practice. It will become easier but the first few times are rough.
It's quite telling that it was the mum who asked that question. She wants the dog 'fixed', like she could get a car fixed and then it's done and good to go. It does not work like that with a living creature. I hope she now understands that training does not stop when you leave class, or even after a few weeks at home. It's al life-long thing.
@@EvelineUK the mother has no interest really, she just wants him perfectly trained for him to be at home. I'm getting a vibe she was out voted on the getting a dog and she still hasn't warmed to him
GSDs are so smart and trainable. I think Tom gets fast results because he has a fresh relationship with the dog and the dog quickly figures out that Tom will treat them fairly and give clear communication so they decide hey! I like this guy! Whereas the existing family has to work extra hard to reset and rebuild their relationship with the dog
I love how you keep this raw and not just show the highlights while also showing the awkward uneasy conversations you have to have with the owers. Awesome to watch.
I noticed the pinned comment and I was really glad to see it. I'm extremely frustrated with how many videos I get suggested of trainers bashing other trainers. It can be really disheartening so it was nice to see that addressed in this video. We're all out here doing out best, that needs to be respected more.
Can we get some updates on dogs you’ve had on the channel in the past? I would love to see how they are doing now. Like a “where are they now” series.
I wish we could, but that takes more time than any of us have to do.
@@tomdavisofficial damn! I’d offer my time if that was an option.
I would also love to see that!
Maybe have past clients send in a video clip of their pups now
@@letarolfson2376 that's actually a great idea. I'd be very interested in seeing if the owners were capable of keeping up the new training techniques with their dogs. I believe, most of the time, it's the humans that need the training. Lol.
Buzz with the water bowl... "hey, weird hooman! the bowl is empty!" LoL 😂
That was so funny!! 😂😂
The talk around the 14 minute mark probably had the most impact on me then any video youve ever done. Being that straight forward and honest with an owner is amazing. I really hope they heard you.
That "he's not training the dog he is training us" was so nice to hear
I’ve watched you grow as a person and as a trainer and it’s been amazing! I LOVE seeing trainers care so deeply about their clients both dog and human. It’s (I’d say) 99.9% human error and mistakes when dogs act this way. As a trainer we train humans more than dogs. Humans can be so much more complicated and stuck in their ways because it’s all they’ve known. Dogs seek the guidance and structure. Once they’re shown that structure they absolutely thrive and absorb it like a sponge and melt in your hands in relief. Beautifully done!
Love this, thank you.
@@tomdavisofficial thank you for being an honest upfront trainer that does amazing things!
That eye contact was AWESOME!! LIke saying "Did I do good?" or "What do we do next?" I love this... Thank you for doing what you do :)
"Don't look for perfection - look for progression every single day a little bit." I feel that sentence so much. Sometimes you get frustrated because you want improvement so fast, but you are missing that you have already come a long way and things improved already. If I look where I was with my dog 1 year ago ... we did so much improvement. But there is always stuff to work on and you get frustrated so easily. Take a depp breath and be proud of the things you accomplish.
I love how honest he is with every client that’s in a way that is nice enough but the truth where it is like you are the problem, I can help but you gotta put in the work and the dog will follow not “it’s the dog who has the problem” which is honestly a hard pill to swallow but it makes you take accountability of your actions because your dog’s behavior is a result of it soooo 🤷🏽♀️
Reactive for sure. And anxious. It’s so great to see a GSD that starts to “click”. I LOVE your work with GSDs. I watch every GSD video of yours. And your techniques have VASTLY reduced my GSD Coatie’s dog reactivity out on walks.
I have a 4yo German shepherd. She will kangaroo hop on the leash bc she is so excited. I’ve tried everything. She also barks and growls at people. But if they walk up to her she just wants to meet them. She doesn’t know how to show it I guess. I love watching his videos and working with her. She has gotten better.
What do you mean by GSD Coatie? Is that your doggie's name?
@@bendosia No a Coatie is what Longhaired/long coated GSDs are often called
Tom is teaching everyone important life lessons. He speaks so passionate!
Oh my Gosh! I laughed so hard when Buzz straight pushed the water bowl out like "Yo! Im thirsty!" Great Video Tom! Great instruction and these guys made such great progress! It is truly amazing to watch you work! Keep it up!
Tom you did an amazing job with Buzz. He came into our salon for grooming a year ago and was aggressive to the point he bite my hand. I’m amazed on his progression. Just hope the mom works with him. The daughters seem to own the dog.
Mom has never had a dog before, and l give her a lot of credit for trying to learn about being a good dog owner. I hope she keeps at it, because he can be her best friend.
Another excellent GSD training video!! Thank you, No Bad Dogs crew. A friendly note to the owners- Tom is directly on point when he brought up the training mindset, which needs to be “What can I do to modify this behavior”, not, “Why can’t Buzz do x,y, or z”. If you need any encouragement , I think your family is capable of learning the techniques necessary to train Buzz and I think Buzz is capable and even eager to work under your guidance. Tom showed you the reins- it is your decision to take ahold of them. Be patient and please don’t give up on the training. -another reactive GSD Dad
Really shows how owners holding onto fear when they’re handling their dogs can really transmit down the leash. When the owner was tense, so was the dog. It took the owner letting go and having faith that he wouldn’t react, to repair their relationship
I just love how positive he is with every single person. No matter how bad they are, how delusional, how many crazy things they've done before coming to him, and even how little progress they make in the session... he always mentions the positives that they are doing or have done. Anyone who has tried dog training knows the hardest thing is the owners. The dogs are easy and will follow what you say and love it.. It is the owners that mess up, don't listen, have bad attitude etc...
Love this channel!!! I have a 1 year GSD and Tom has helped me soooooOoooOooOoo much 👏🥰 Ive been watching you guys for years (since the times when you didn’t use a mic lol) and I’m so proud at how high quality the editing and footage is now. Great work!!
SO happy you like it!
I have a 4yo and make sure you socialize it well. Mine growls when she wants to meet people. I wish I could post a video
It’s so funny, I’ve watched so many, smugly saying “oh, these guys are the problem,” and now..I have a puppy that brought me to literal tears over his being bitey..and..my fault. Of course.
I’ve never seen a single animal, dog or horse, not be stressed the first time the behaviors are corrected. All you’re doing is replacing one behavior with another healthier behavior. Generally the behavior you want to correct doesn’t actually have any benefit for the dog, it might even cause more stress or destruction (chewing digging) - but when you correct the dog and redirect that energy to something productive or comforting, slowly that dog gains the tools to deal with his own stress. It only seems like the dog is getting more stressed during the initial correction because that’s all the dog has ever known and changing habits can be stressful. Changing them to good habits teaches the dog to self comfort and destress at the same time. It’s just so valuable. You should always always always work with a trainer for higher risk behaviors.
I see dog as being so anxious and stressed out makes him act out at whoever is there. Good session!
Frustration is a real struggle when dealing with a strong willed dog, but patience and practice will get you to where you want to be. I struggled at first when training with my dog, but with daily training he is a completely different dog to walk and I love it. We aren’t close to perfect by any means but we improve daily. Great video🥰
17:04 when he starts to look up at his owner for guidance as his leader made my heart melt!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
As a future dog trainer By watching Toms videos I’m learning how to deal with the people and best explain to them what they’re doing wrong, because dog training is easy…. Getting the owners to face reality and stop living in lalaland is the hard part. Dogs aren’t computers where you install stuff and stays that way.. it’s a living thing and need maintenance
Buzz's body language and panting when stressed reminds me so much of my super reactive mutt Mia during difficult training sessions. I have also felt intense frustration at times, just like this owner. I constantly have to remind myself that the biggest variable that slows down my dog's progress is me. She can only do what she knows, and I have to be very focused on being clear with what I am asking her to do. I always pick up something new with these videos. Thanks for all you do Tom and team.
I feel for these folks and the dog. Everyone is unhappy. You did an impressive job helping these people learn. Not an easy process for people that have never had a pet. Kudos for their efforts.
Yep, the most frustrating part of this video was how the mom wanted to put in ZERO effort in helping her dog. Just wanted to give up immediately because he wasn’t perfect in 2 hours.
I'm glad this vid shows the frustration owners can have. I def feel like her some days. The counter perspective is a great reminder that your dog doesn't yet understand what you want. Thank you!
The mom is the one who needs the help not Buzz. She really was too lazy to want to do the work, rather complain about it. Awesome job for the daughter, she's willing to do the work.
Love the multiple videos of different reactive dogs, same or similar breeds, and how they respond differently. Kudos for calling out other videos trying to twist training progress.
It's so stressful having a reactive dog but I love how you talk to the owners because I know there's not a guaranteed fix. It's alot of training for both owner and dog.
I started watching you when you started working with dogs. I wish you lived closer. YOU ARE THE BEST!!
It's such a hard pill to swallow when an owner realizes the problem is them and not the dog. It's very humbling, but truth hurts sometimes. Way to go, Tom and Buzz's family. ❤
The mom doesn't have a lot of patience, sorry to say it like that but it shows. Growing up in a house without dogs is no excuse, I grew up in a house without dogs and we got our puppy during COVID from a high-kill shelter. Yes it was difficult and i will be honest somedays you don't feel like you are making any progress. But you keep at it and one day the dog will follow every command you give. It also is a moment of joy and pride to see your dog transform into the vision you had for them. It's exactly like Tom said "They don't know what you want...you have to show them". I have learned a lot from his videos and i will continue to do so. Thank you Tom for all you do.
Whether the owners kept him or not and I hope they did. This video is incredibly insightful, into dog training, interpersonal relationships, family dynamics, leadership, stress, marketing, emotional dynamics, followthrough. This video has enriched me. Thank you
"You have to over come these things, and it takes time," So many people need to hear this. To often do people send their dogs to a trainer for, in this case, 3 days and expect it to change everything in said amount of time. It takes way longer then that, along with dedication.
My arms are hurting just looking at that dog. So hefty for a shepherd who already has a lot of pulling strength XD Yikes! Good work owners and Tom!
Very big
Such a wise man. I have literally taken to holding the idea of "NO BAD DOGS" close, and seeing how (much!) it applies to the greater world around me. 🤯😵💫🤓
I know this is an old video but man, were 1 week into raising a 5 month old puppy and he’s mostly very good but has some issues were working on. I’ve been following your videos and trying to replicate your training and the information you give is priceless. I appreciate how raw and honest your videos are and I’m confident our pup will be the best boy following your advice! Thank you so much for sharing these videos with us! 🙏
Tom, I am very thankful I found your videos. Watching your videos has helped me tremendously with my dog who all of the sudden became aggressive towards my other dog. I cannot thank you enough for posting your videos to educate us who are dog owners. I was desperate with my dog's aggression, and looked for many resources to help her, but your videos made the difference. I am still working with her, but definitely much much better.THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!!
Poor baby boy. Thank you Tom for helping him.
I bet it's frustrating just to have to teach these kinds of owners how to be owners. In my shelter,it's all I ever hear and see. "I just don't have time and I'm stressed/frustrated so I don't want the dog",etc When in reality it's a decent dog with a horrible owner that doesn't want to do the work they need to do. I see reactivity in him. He's just all over the place.
when he push the water bowl, like refill dude, so cute🐶❤
LOVE this video! One of my top 3 favorites! Your no nonsense, kind and caring (for both the dog and owners) way of talking to the owners was refreshing! You mentioned over and over that the final outcome will depend on them - SO TRUE! I agree with you Tom---When will people wake and smell the roses that dog training videos are being taken waaay out of context! What kind of brand are they making for themselves and their business?
Finally!! A trainer I can respect. You are so correct with all the bad advice from “trainers”.
also: i'd say he's reactive! its nice that you ask if people think that the dog is reactive or aggressive while educating on the difference. great stuff!
In general, kids pick up on this much better than adults. Good work, everybody!
So glad you pointed out the dog is overweight. People need to be told -"you are killing your dog"! What are they thinking not exercising the poor creature, no wonder he's frustrated. He doesn't seem to know anything, have they made any effort with him?
I love how honest you were with the mom while also trying to give the dog and owners the credit they deserve for what’s been accomplished
The dog seems scared and confused - so reactive, not aggressive. Ty so mch for these vids, has helped us so mch with our rescue Dobie mix who has separation anxiety.
Exactly “he needs a good leader”. Excellent training!
The natural eye contract from him is amazing
It is great to see how the families confidence changed as you worked with the dog. I am so happy you are able to help dogs and people in the way you do. Thank you so much.
His stress is like a child going off to schol for the first time - many times parent(s) are just as stressed as child. Usually by the end of day or week, it becomes 'no biggie'. Similar with training, I think. With structure, guidance, and being consistant usually stress levels on both 2 legged n 4 legged starts to ease up. Good on this family trying to make a difference.
your care for all dogs is so awesome thanks!!
I learn something new and refresh my training with each of your videos. Thank you!
Amazing work as always! It makes me happy to see how much the daughter cares and is willing to put in the work! ^^
Hell yeah Tom! What an awesome video! Great insight on the stress part. Love it
The mom is scared of their dog. Her fear of XYZ is only causing more stress and not opening herself to the idea that she can be a good handler herself. The daughters did great with him. If the dog senses that you feel nervous, uncomfortable with them, then they're not going to listen to you and do as they please.
Everytime I watch one of your videos with an anxious GSD, I learn so much. We have a 2 year 5 month old GSD who I've trained using your techniques. Thank you Tom!
amazing video Tommy exactly what I dealt with when my doggie was young vet saying keep him close and don't socialize alot because he hasn't had all his shots it caused him to be reactive for the wrong reasons. But he's doing better now I just have to get him less reactive to people and dogs. ugh
Great video, it was great to see the mom relaxed and more confident walking the dog towards the end of the video.
Loved seeing the fam, especially the mom, walking Buzz with ease. good job fam
I love your work! Keep doing what you're doing!!!
THANKS for all your videos and teaching, you are amazing and easy to follow.
Great video! You really are training the owners. You can tell Buzz is starting to look to the owners for direction. Love it!
I appreciate how kind you are when keeping it real.
Fantastic video. Believe this is one you referenced for me in answer to my heel position issues. Thank you for putting this out . Love it!
I like how you explain things how the dogs are going through and what they really need
So glad you addressed the stress and online trainers taking it out of context!! Amazing work as always.
Just recently found your channel but I’m hooked. I like your approach and watching the results of your work. It would be cool to see follow ups on some of the dogs that the families were ready to give up on after your training
I really like how you keep pointing that he is overwight and that that its also a problem not just in health concerns but behavour
You’re amazing Tom. An amazing teacher to those that aren’t always the most willing or eager learners. Too bad everyone can’t be more like you!
one of the best explanations i have seen. thank you very much 👍🏼
Socializing your dog early is so important!
Loved this video! Don't look for perfection, look for progression! I sure hope they kept up on his training! Such a nice dog!
He's definitely reactive and not aggressive. You go! I love your channel. ❤️
hello from Germany and thank you for all the great videos! what I see and like a lot is the conversation with the owners and how you show them in the videos with real scenarios and emotions - that's reality - ! great job. me and my staffy boy learned a lot already! keep up with the great work!
love this vid! hope you are well, Tom!
I absolutely respect and love your methods so much. Your an amazing behaviorist!!!! I wish I lived in your area!
You are actually training people for their dogs!!! 🤣🤣🤣 That was good to hear at the very end about how all dogs will progress and regress in areas. That's what I am experiencing with my dogs. We are always training and working on something. The entire living with a dog and learning their language has been a very amazing experience!
My GSD'S are learning! From the videos I have watched on your channel! Thank you!!!
GREAT content! Thanks for what you do!
Awesome video . I was really upset with the mom especially her comment about believing humans and animals shouldn't live under the same roof!!! It's a dog NOT A CHICKEN OR A HORSE ! SORRY but that mentality is why she wanted to get rid of the dog in my opinion. Dogs will do what you want them to if you let them know EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT ! IFthe dog doesn't know what you want it's not too smart to expect them to be mind readers !!! The one daughter was awesome she did it perfect you can tell she loves Buzz! The father said it exactly 💯 % he's training us not the dog. While people may feel uncomfortable watching a dog being totally stressed it's way better than that dog paying with its life for something it didn't know what they wanted from it . I have watched tons of Tom Davis's video's and think for such a young man he's got a great understanding of what it takes to make people understand that they are the ones failing their dog by being frustrated and giving up on a dog that doesn't understand because they didn't make it clear what they wanted. Also loved the dog using his paw to shove the empty water bowl towards Tom !!! I actually watched more than once cause the first time I didn't believe the dog actually did it !!! I laughed the 2nd time ans watched once more just to laugh again ! Tom's reaction???... OK buddy I got you ! Loved it.
Please do more of these!
Loved that part about dog stress👍 1000000% agree with You🙂
