I love Kalin (Kiryu), he just a cool bad guy who knows how to be evil and have good reasons to get revenge, although it was all a misunderstanding. I wish he came back in Neo Domino City with Yusei and the others, but ends up staying in Crashtown now renamed Satisfaction Town with Nico and West. Kiryu imo has the best and most interesting deck in 5 d's , zero hand combo looks super OP and its pronounced *k k paku apuuuh !* (in a nutshell)

Given how the dub tends to omit death, the fact that Kallen ended up getting a life sentence is just as likely given how Sector Security is shown to be very corrupt. Therefore, when that officer was injured and didn't die from his wounds, it's more than likely the officer and his compatriots played up his injuries as being worse than they truly were. So in essence, the legal system was used to make an example of him there by giving him a life sentence so as further tighten it's grip on Satellite.
I cried when he died, his story was so powerful and moving.

Well, idk if the dub says so, but I remember Kiryu stating that "his darkness never left him" in the sub. Even after being saved by Yusei and the kids. So it makes sense that he can still inflict real damage
