Roy and jessica from Blacksmithing Blanks sent their air powered treadle hammer over for us to try out. Simple but pretty ingenious.

  • Thank you John! I'm very thankful for your support of Jessica and I... I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with in your future videos. Also a quick note: The hammer hits the hardest when the Air assist is supplied with 100-140psi with 150psi being the max out for this cylinder. Some of the Play in the hammer in the back And forth direction can be reduced By tightening up the pivot pin location until it's snug but not enough to create excess friction..

  • I’m saving up for one of these. I’m a 60-year-old disabled veteran, and I think it will extend my smithing life by several years. Yes, it seems pricey for some do-it-yerselfers, but Roy put a lot of thought and testing into this and sends it out as a complete kit aimed at those of us on a budget. I, for one, am very appreciative of his approach. (Plus, I believe in paying people for their work.)

  • It can become handy if you align everything after it in the shop but for moving metal seriously in bigger quantity it may be to weak. Besides that, the air compressor will run all day long. But at the end you have to confess that roy did a great job engeneering this version of a treadlehammer for this budget. Greetings!:)

  • Now you will never skip a leg day ! Who needs a gym membership right? Just make sure that you become ambidexterous so that your right side doesnt look like arnold in prime days and left side like a toothpick :) This is simple way i like it alot ,just what i needed :) Simple to make ,only different way i want to do is instead of complex fitting of hande to a steel plate i think i will make a wooden insert for square pipe(40x40mm should do the trick) that will go in and then just make a proper fit for hammer head to go on it i could maybe even weld it since i wont hold it vibrations wont bother me.

  • Hi John. I'm curious if you or Roy have thought about reversing the air assist. What if you had a VERY heavy hammer and instead of the air forcing the hammer down against the spring, instead of that the hammer falls freely, and the air is used to raise it back up for the next strike. The air wouldn't hold it up, but would bring it up till a trigger catches it. Then the only thing the user is doing is releasing the trigger. The force of the strike could be adjusted by changing the height of the trigger. I haven't figured how much more complex it would be, or how to configure the trigger. Just curious if that's the sort of thing people are thinking about.

  • I'm in a pasition where I can swing a hammer at the anvil just fine. If I need to beat a piece of metal into submission I'm still capable, despite a disability. What I find is that any leg operated tools range from uncomfortable to downright impossible. Treadle hammers, foot pumps, foot pedals for welders, sewing machines they all are difficult to manage. Even the foot pedal for a power hammer, sensitive as it is makes me question my personal ability to manage the strike with enough precision to accurately shape a piece. Noting the other comments from people with disabilities and those who just find a third hand useful, it makes me think a control system adapted to use by anyone whether disabled or able bodied would be the perfect thing to open up smithing to anyone who wants to do it. I'm not an engineer so I'm sadly inadequate to even attempt that challenge, but someone out there must be that one genius who can design tools to aid the disabled smith. If you are that person, please use your knowledge and skill and hopefully make enough profit from the patents to put your children and granchildren through college!

    @fredfchopin@fredfchopin Жыл бұрын
    • While my air compressor is quite large, this tool doesn't need a big compressor. The air system only needs air in single bursts when you step on the peddle for a single hammer blow. It would be worth asking Roy what he's seen for air consumption
