Welcome back Colorado River Watchers! A brand new agreement was just struck between the basin states and the USBR to further conserve water over the next 3 years. The Federal Government offered river users in the lower basin an incentive to come to the table using money from the Inflation Reduction Act. Find out how much it is and what the terms are in this update!

  • While this is welcome news, it's simply a better band-aid to the overall problem. When the compact is up is the critical time. They need to come to the realization that the numbers used for the past 100 years are simply wrong. If they can agree on that and use current day projections it'll go a long way to at least fixing the allocation issues. The supply issues however are truly not going to be solved by nature alone sadly.

  • Good news for the next three years or so...!! We do need to sit down and reallocate according to the population growth....

    • Yes you nailed it! A sort of band-aid or stop-gap for a few years, just like the inflow/outflow game the USBR was playing before this. The federal drought funding can't go on forever so it is time to see if any real solutions will come in the next 3 years or if this was just to quiet everyone down so they could go on business as usual!

  • Really glad that CA was able to negotiate something that everyone could agree on... although I wasn't at all pleased knowing that CA was a greedy hold-out. (That's a selfish act I frankly would've expected from officials of my own state of AZ.) Regardless, it's done now, and hopefully each state will police themselves accordingly... like adults.

    • I am glad there are at least negotiations happening now too, albeit at the cost of bribing water wasters with our tax dollars- but at least we have something. The real test now will be to see how much of an effect this actually has through 2026, and if it can lead to a more lasting and permanent agreement when it's time for the new compact. Thanks for checking out the update!

  • I dont have very high hopes. For now its just a written agreement with no actual plans set in place on how theyre going to cut back.

    • Yep I'm trying to remain optimistic, but today I read an article where one of the managers keeps stressing it's "just a proposal" and no one has actually agreed. That doesn't seem like a good attitude to have going into more negotiations! I think they are all sick of talking and hearing about it, and just want it to go away for a while i.e. until 2026.

    • @MOJO ADVENTURES Its so frustrating. Everything is about money and GDP nowadays. States prioritize that over the future.

  • YIKES! we were right, a pay off and California is gloating with its headlines today. "California emerges as big winner in Colorado River water deal" This way of thinking makes me cringe. I just sent you a comment about a payoff, and there were these headlines. I like your positive take on this. And no one learned the very important lesson, yet. Well, guess I need to start my next article for Gringo Gazette. I sure need some info for Baja and did they participate...doubt we would see any Federal money down here.

    • I just noticed that article also, first thing I thought is... there are no "winners" in the water fight. This isn't a battle to begin with! I thought we were all on the same team trying to find solutions for the good of the Earth and humankind. Silly me! 😂 I will have to reference that article in the coming update. I really have no idea about how the cuts or usage will affect anything south of the border in Baja there, but if you find more info send it over 👍

      @mojo.adventures@mojo.adventures11 ай бұрын
    • @@mojo.adventures Yup. Ultimately, the only 'winner' will be Mother Nature.

      @DaveFiggley@DaveFiggley11 ай бұрын
    • No Winners! right! But sadly man's way of thinking for far too long. It certainly isn't a game that is being played. Makes for good theatre and headlines. Sadly the thinking is still, "me first," not us working the problem together. I would be glad to see you use this. Here on the coast of Baja the three major cities of TJ, Rosarito and Ensenada know that water is not a game. It has been a dire situation as the population of locals and US immigrants began to over-run the resources. The lower income people have lived with the dire water situation for over 10 years or more. They rely on water trucks that run almost 24/7 to fill the demands and water stores to fill up water bottles. Another city water cut from the Colorado would not be welcomed. I'll see what I can dig up and let you know.
