In January, teenage singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo broke out on the pop scene with her debut single “Drivers License.” The song’s success took even Rodrigo by surprise, topping the charts after its very first week out due to a swell of internet obsession.
Ahead of her as-yet-untitled debut album, due out on May 21st, Rodrigo has released her second single, “Deja Vu.” She and her producer Dan Nigro sat down in the studio with Rolling Stone to discuss the making of the song on the latest episode of The Breakdown.

OKG THANK U I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO NOTICED THAT!!
I heard it from the first listen 😍
I think she’s so successful because she doesn’t make music she thinks people will want to hear, she makes music that explains her feelings in a way that makes sense to her
Exactly she gives us what she wants and what she feels and we all end up falling in love with it
That doesn’t work with everyone though. Olivia was fortunate that her music is able to do well in a world dominated by Rap and R and B
Completely agree. I'm someone who doesn't listen to Taylor Swift or Billie Eilish or the like, but I love Olivia's entire album. People can feel her genuine feelings throughout all the songs and it shows with how successful she is rn

I like that she is being respected as an actual artist instead of some actress that decided to do music because she really is a lyrical genius and is very talented
That’s because she wasn’t a hugely established actress first. There are so many actresses who actually considered themselves singers first but made their name acting first. If you remember, when her first song came out “the girl from High school musical the musical the series” was an ongoing joke like “wth kind of show name is that”? And that’s because aside from tweens/teens who had Disney plus and also watched the show. My point is- her big fame came from singing. So we’re viewing her most in depth as a singer. If she had won an Oscar six months before this... we’d look at her as an “actress turned singer” no matter how many hits she had. Like how people see Jennifer Hudson as a singer, not an actress, even though she has a Best Supporting Actress Oscar on her shelf. Because we knew her as a famous singer for like 5+ years before she got her big movie roll. Relative.
@sabrina cruz you mean Selena Gomez probably
Ok, lyrical genius, let's not get too caught up shall we?
Gabriele Marchitelli yeah shall we
@@ElultimoDurako she's talented and great at what she does, if you look at any classical/jazz musician out theee they have probably put in 15x more work and can play things so complex she cannot even think of, as of lyrics, most of the album is simply about teenage love and hating your teenage years, she has talent and a very good voice, she seems incredibly nice and a great person, but calling her a genius when jacob collier exists is just a bit too much

She is this newer generation’s Taylor Swift. Hold up, listen. As a Swiftie who has been with her for the last 10 years, I got to grow up and learn all of life with her. It becomes a big part of your life and everything you are. I can thank TS for her songs teaching me what love is and isn’t. How deep love can be and feel. I still learn through her music to this day. A song from her Fearless album shows up on shuffle and I am 15 again and I can remember that exact time of my life and who I loved and who I was. It’s an indescribable feeling. Olivia is going to be that for the next generation and they are going to learn and grow so much from her music. She definitely is not just copying Taylor’s music, but is making her own and she’s creating that legacy and we don’t even know how far she’s going to go. But just know, she’s going to go far and I’m excited to see the inspiration she’s going to give to those who are like me back when I was 15. Absolutely amazing work.

Not really but she’s a good singer
unique isnt the right word, but she’s still really talented and i love her
Her producer looks at her like a Proud Dad would a daughter. They bounce ideas off each other really well ...she gives him credit constantly & he lets her create/explain the process freely. Tbh I had hoped the beginning of the song would be less, I guess slow-moving and almost drawn-out. But after hearing that it was a deliberate choice to have the beginning sound almost "off-putting and painfully calm", I thought it was interesting that they chose to do the opposite of what most would've done, with what's popular in music today. But I'm totally on board. Love their dynamic.
Most pop songs have 5+ writers. A hit of this quality requiring only TWO writers not only shows how talented they are but the balance and chemistry it takes to make quality music. Yesssir IFWI
