Nagisa's Mom meets Koro Sensei

One of my favorite scenes in Assassination Classroom that hasn't gotten uploaded onto KZhead for some reason. The episode where the scenes are from are Season 2 Episode 9 and 10
Assassination Classroom is owned by Funimation and Madman Entertainment.

  • Abusive and/or controlling parents don't listen that easily. It doesn't matter how clearly the child communicates his/her desires. The parents wants totally control and couldn't care less what the child wants/needs.

    • Danielle Freeman you are right, but some parents like Nagisa’s mother are like that because of the regrets in life they made, or because of the problems they had with their own parents. Hiromi, Nagisa’s mother, is a broken (albeit demented) bird because of the regrets in that we made in her life. Her parents made her study for tests, and forbade her from wearing girly clothes. They even made her keep her short (probably wanted her to be a boy, but that’s just my theory). And not only that, but she was unable to get into the university she wanted to go to. She decided to have a daughter who she could use to obtain those dreams for her. Even though she ended up getting a son, our beloved Nagisa, that didn’t stop her from living vicariously through him.

    • Seriously, mental and emotional abuse is just as serious as physical abuse. It might not give you bruises, but it can absolutely tear a person down to nothing, shape and mold them to be whatever the abuser wants. Plus it's harder to detect and prove for obvious reasons.

    • I mean, at least Endeavor knows he's easy to hate. Whenever someone speaks against Nagisa's mum, she tries to guilt trip them as if she's the best thing that's ever happened to them, and that it's rude for them to disagree with her. Endeavor just skips all that bull with a "I don't care one bit if you hate me, because that's not important. What's important is that you grow stronger." And then he got development and genuinely cares, regretting his mistakes. Nagisa's mum was arguably more difficult (maybe not worse) than Endeavor prior to Season 4. Now he looks like an angel compared to her

It takes a hell of a lot more than a single display of badassery to get through to a smothering parent like her. And it should've taken a whole lot more than an apology for Nagisa to just forgive his mother, regardless of whether it was a front. Remember, just so she could replay her own life through that of her child, she was *dead-set* on having a daughter, even if it meant turning her *only son* into one.

    • It’s a little better explained (albeit not well) in the manga. What nagisa wants is to live normally. And after her shock with the assassin she’s implied to mellow out alot (although we don’t see much of it, especially in the anime). The experience snapped her to reality and so she started attempting to act better. While I’m sure she was still unhinged AF, trauma doesn’t go away from more trauma, what we’re shown is her trying to improve herself after that wake-up call. The main issue is she’s a tertiary character and utterly irrelevant, so she only gets what showing is absolutely necessary for the story.

  • The fact that Nagisa's mom actually changes at the end of this little arc is unquestionably a toxic implication thrown around in Japanese society. "Just communicate better, it's your fault s/he's like this". In America and most western countries if you get caught doing the shit she does to her child, the child goes to social services and outside of the abuse, at least in the cases where people can actually save the children after social diagnosis. You can't change damaged adults in a way that will help the kids in time at this sort of level. Most people don't have perfect parents, but Japanese society is extremely willing to push down the abuse out of sight because of their lack of willingness to support the abused, out of petty "fear" of reprisal that likely doesn't exist. And they wonder why birth-rates have gone down. People abused as kids don't usually marry. And the bullying that actually goes on in Japanese schools is absolutely reprehensible. All because the bad seeds can get away with it easily it gets worse, because the incidents are always pushed down. In the west we have the same problems, but people actually stand up and defend each other and are less afraid to do so. Because we all understand that letting abuse slide leads to another school shooting, or another gangster, or more murder. And I bet a lot of violent stuff and crime in japanese society is pushed down to keep appearances. It's absolutely terrifying how pervasive the ideas demonstrated here are in Japan.

    • I hate to break this to you, but emotional manipulation hardly ever actually gets counted as child abuse in the American system. As long as you have a nice house, appropriate living quarters, and no physical signs of abuse most places are like "yeah they're fine" and move on.

It made me really upset that Nagisa was like "I understand your stress mom so I'm gonna help out around the house!" It's a horrible way to explain Nagisas mom because it doesn't matter what Nagisa does, his mom is always going to find ways to be upset with him and she is gonna find new ways to manipulate him. At least that is my experience, so it's frustrating to see such an awful character be essentially forgiven without actually learning a lesson.

I don't think her fainting was just the adrenaline wearing off: she's in shock that she smothered him when she should've savored him for who HE was, and since he's assassin skills prove he can handle himself, she now realizes he might leave the nest sooner then planned.

It was revealed that she lost her dreams bcs she's a female and they restricted her so much bcs of her gender. By having a daughter and trying to make her daughter 'perfect', she wants to prove to people that women can do as good or even better than men. And her obsession becomes even more maladaptive when she didn't even get a daughter but a son instead

    • Ken nn Obviously, as a young girl, Hiromi parents forced her to prioritize studying and she was never able to dress herself up. She always dreamed of attending one of the countries top universites, and getting a job at a very prestigious company, but failed to achieve either of these goals. This lack of fulfillment, as well as her controlled childhood, caused Hiromi to wish for a daughter, so that she could live the life she had wanted through her. However, she had a son, Nagisa, instead. Despite having a boy, Hiromi still tried to live the life she wanted through him. Her methods included keeping Nagisa's hair long and occasionally forcing him to crossdress. According to Nagisa, it was Hiromi's controlling and semi-psychotic temper that drove his father away. So she’s not suitable to be a parent, but it depends on the situation, all I know is someone call child protection services on her..

Once there was a case that sparked some indignation about a mom with strong opinions on gender expression who forced her young son to dress and act like a girl from a early age. If I remember well, the mom was sued for child abuse.

Children can often become tools for abusers to hurt their spouse if the kid is not seen to be on the abusers side. If the Dad saw no sign of physical endangerment and no evidence to show abuse in court then leaving Nagisa with her and not fighting for custody is arguably safer for him. Maybe if he was older and could be trusted by a court to choose who to live with but that differs between countries.

  • I want to be mad, because I feel like his mom was emotionally abusive. And then on the other hand I'm like, but that's why Nagisa is so talented as an assassin. Then this crazy heifer took it to another level, drugged her son, then tried to force him to burn down his class building. Other children are educated there too! And now I wonder maybe Nagisa would have turned out just as crazy, I'm surprised his dad took her back...berating her son, because he wasn't born a girl and constantly pushing everything she wanted for herself off on him.

    • She was also physically abusive. I believe, in this same episode, there's a scene where Nagisa tries to say he doesn't want to leave the class and she slams his head into the table.
