( www.TFLcar.com ) You may think a brand new Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and an old Volkswagen Touareg may be completely different on paper, but are they equally capable off-road? Roman and Tommy take these two SUVs over Red Cone Pass in Colorado to find out.

    • Yeah, was curious if they received some sponsorship from dodge as ‘influencers’. Prior videos more or less praise the VWs performance for what it is... I definitely can not see myself spending $40k+ on a Jeep Wrangler/ Rubicon. Recently, I saw a Rubicon truck at the dealership for $67k.. I would not spend that much on something to beat the shit out of it.

    • The fan is a bit loud at low speeds, but it's doing a lot of work, it's cooling the turbo, the intercooler, radiator, the etorque battery pack, AC, etc. Having driven one for a few days in 100+ TX heat it never let the coolant levels go above 200F. I wanted to hate the engine because my initial reaction was that the whole system is a bit overdesigned, but it kind of won me over for the period that I had it. I hope it turns out to be a reliable long term engine package.

  • The Touareg did just fine, it got to the top of the mountain just fine. The moment where it touched borrow slightly and tapped the tree with the minor are not problems, the Touareg is a bigger vehicle so that will happen to all bigger vehicles, the Jeep ran a better line (if u look at the video you can see that the Jeep received better directions from the navigator than the Touareg received, so the Touareg was aligned poorly to go over that rock). We can also see that the Touareg has a much more comfortable ride, which is important because the Jeep has a severely kidney busting ride that just beats up your body as you get older). The Touareg also has plastic parts that can be superglued or replaced, so that is the same as the Jeep, but of course VW prices might be higher but if it is then you can simply pick up your plastic at a junkyard since this is an off-road vehicle, it does not matter if the colors don't match and it doesn't matter if it is scraped up either, off road vehicles should look like they go off-road every day.

    • Maybe Roman is the better spotter and Tommy a better pilot for the Touareg. Would have been interesting had Roman been piloting the Wrangler and Tommy the Touareg, which would mean the spotter roles also reverse. Tommy also seems to have more experience with the Touareg at this point. Maybe he's got a slightly better feel for it than Roman does now?

  • If you two keep it up, I’m going to have a dang JL, 2 door Rubicon in my garage!!! I live with Banff in my back yard, so to speak, so have some country almost as nice as what you two, and the team, have for off-roading. The Tourag is still impressing me as well, but that 2.0 litre Jeep!! Wow! Thanks for the fun video. Good to see some paint left behind, fortunately from the VW that is. Roman made me laugh when his first reaction turned into a joke about fixing the mirror with crazy glue.You fellas, and the team, have created one of the best off-road videos of this type for any channel I have watched! I have watched a LOT of them. Thanks so very much guys! Please play safe out there.......

  • Clearance and dynamic clearance are 2 different pairs of shoes. The first is measured standing still ... the second appears under the dynamic pressure of a stone on a single wheel getting on / off that rock. The mirror's plastic "housing" of the touareg is here 67€ incl. 19% VAT or 78$ deliverabke in 48 hours ... but makes no sense if glue can fix it ... cause otherwise you need a paint job done.

  • I love my Touareg . You should have got the 3.0 V6 tdi , by far the best one . 225bhp 500 ft/lbs of torque. Mine has just tripped over to 143000 miles . Never lets me down . Only mod . 18" rims with All terrain tyres . It goes everywhere I need to go . Gives me 35mpg too .

  • 11:40 Tommy, you're exactly right. Despite the reduced articulation of an independent suspension compared to a straight-axle suspension, the independent suspension overall will be more comfortable. This matches my experience riding/driving in military vehicles, trucks, SUV's, and crossovers. For folks who no longer or do not have the physical and mental endurance of withstanding the pronounced side-to-side sway of straight-axle suspensions, lifting wheels at rough obstacles is a reasonable sacrifice of articulation assuming the vehicle has BLD-effect of traction control and/or lockers for that comfort of fully-independent suspension.

  • I would love to see y’all do a mash up with a 08-12 Trail Rated Jeep Liberty vs the VW and even a Wrangler or Trailhawk anything. I have a 2010 Jeep Liberty Renegade and I haven’t done a whole lot with it and there wasn’t that much love for them.

  • Unlock the front lockers from the Jeep and do it again and see how it does and keep the sway bar connected that would make it more fair

    @Eightball2516@Eightball25164 жыл бұрын
    • The VW has a disconnecting front sway bar, so its fine that the Jeep used it. But really, the Jeep would have done this whole trail with its lockers off. There was no reason to use them.

  • Amazing video! Totally in awe of the effort you took to do all this, thanks so much! Do wish you would have given some more direct props to the Touareg though "...really impressed by how well the Jeep did..." - I might say its not overly impressive that it is doing what it should. "Certainly found the limits of the Touareg…" The places the Touareg had trouble seemed more about approach and driving than actual capability limits. Not saying it was perfect, but unless you guys edited out some disaster scenes, seemed really quite on par with what the Jeep did.

  • Double check your build sheet there guys (Tommy commented that the Rubicon has 410 gears) not sure about the new JL's but in the JK's the 410's were only standard in the Manual transmission The automatics were 373's even in the Rubicon unless you special ordered it with 410's! Nice little bait-n-switch from FCA I only recently figured out... Also I've really been enjoying these Touareg off-road videos!

  • Hi Guys, great video. You will have to do it again, this time the Rubicon without lockers, just sway bar disconnect. I recon it will still be better than the Touareg. I never used diff lock on my JK rubicon. Eventually sold it because it made off road boring. Got a JKUL Sahara diesel now, love it.
