The Hanayama Padlock puzzle is a level 5 out of a possible 6 on the Hanayama difficulty scale. The padlock is incredibly difficult to solve given it's very slight changes throughout the solution.
The padlock puzzle solution is all about where you have the gaps on the silver pieces. There are four steps to getting the padlock open which I'll walk you through.
The key is to use the two moves in the video in various different positions to change the orientation of the Padlock puzzle pieces.

the best solution for this puzzle on youtube I made it as far as step 03:49 but didn't know how else I could change the orientation, will try with your steps again tomorrow. cheers

I solved this by pure luck I think, just rotating and flipping it around. putting it back together ? no chance
This is a very tough one to actually figure out because it's hard to know what you're changing with each move and what the start and end positions looks like.
I was talking to my kid while messing around with this in my hand not even looking at it, and it came apart . I managed to get it back together but I've never managed to get it apart again. Everyone was amazed as it had been sitting around in our house for over a year.
I was at a family gathering and I just got this one and the amour one and my dad undid the padlock but couldn't get it back together. I just followed your assembly section and somehow I ended up with the padlock and hanayama engraving on the same side and now im screwed. It's stuck forever and I'm getting very frustrated.
Thanks! Would never have gotten this apart on my own. One minor correction: The two dark gray pieces are NOT exactly the same. The one with the keyhole has a tiny pin on one end of the inside channel.

On mine every piece has those pins, but the ones on the key/padlock side are more pronounced, making them interfere with the first move if the puzzle is oriented with the key/padlock side oriented opposite what's shown in the video. I'm honestly not sure if this is a design feature or a manufacturing anomaly.
Hi there, I'm new *to* puzzles and this great channel. I picked up one of these padlock puzzles and didn't realize they come with a difficulty level and the padlock is one of most difficult. 🙄 I haven't watched this or any solution video, yet. Realistically what chance has a novice like me got of solving this one without watching your solution video? I've seen ppl comment saying even after watching solutions they still can't solve it. 🤣 Is it worth putting it aside for now and starting with the easier puzzles? Or maybe I just get the Dremel out and stick to building lego. 😉
The padlock is a very tough one but there's no harm in having a go at it. If you don't find yourself getting anywhere after a few hours then you can always start with a lower level and come back to this one in the future.
my mum bought me 2 of the 5 star puzzles, thinking I'm some sort of puzzle master XD
There were Hanayama puzzles that were rated higher than this one and was able to solve it without help. But this one was was quite hard and instead of a rating of five, should be a six 😂 because you're dealing with two positions simultaneously at every move.

I broke mine In the start position, one silver ring has a gap and one is solid How do I fix this?
That's just not the start position, you're already a step or two into solving it.
Mine was already solved but someone put the pieces in wrong so the gaps are on opposite sides and the label "padlock" is on the other side of the key hole How do I solve this?
In short, I've no idea how the different orientation would affect the moves required. It'll still be a combination of the same moves, just possibly not the same order. Good luck!

I think my daughter has put it back together wrong. Is this possible and if so how do we fix it please?
I've not come across that issue before... If the puzzle looks normal and there's no piece obviously backwards or wrong, I'm not sure it's possible. I could be wrong though. The hardest part about solving this one is figuring out where you are in the process of solving it. The easiest way to match up wth the video is to use the gaps in the outside silver pieces. They change position depending throughout the solve. Not the answer you were looking for but I hope it helps.
bought this last month--have not tried it yet looks way too complicated --just rec'd the infinity puzzle and will try it later--great videos--how would i ever solve any of these without your help--excellent work
Infinity & Padlock are both tough ones. I'd say the Padlock is the harder of the two.

I bought the infinity and padlock at the same time. The infinity is a piece of cake compared to the padlock......the evil little padlock

I was re assembling it and got lost and I can’t get it back
Try and identify which stage you have it at (by looking at where the gaps are in the two solve pieces) and find that same stage in the video and go from there.
tried this last nite while watching your great video but had to stop somewhere in the middle due to house problem.. now i cannot figure out where i am?? yikes---sorry for any bother--
