Simple in its penmanship but deep in its wisdom, Bill Watterson's Calvin & Hobbes is a comic strip masterpiece that stands the test of time. [1985]

Well, I can't say that I don't miss Calvin and Hobbes, but I am much more happy that he ended it rather than go on and ruin it with a franchise.
Spyguy Marquez agreed
I think it says a lot that Watterson turned down all the licensing and marketing opportunities and all that. It shows that he wanted to preserve the comic's purity and character, even at the cost of mass quantities of money. It's such a great comic and the baseboard of so many childhoods (Including mine). Watterson made such an impact on my life and I'll never be able to repay it. On the behalf of every one of us, Mr. Watterson, Thank you.
Not to mention, Watterson had a ton of money offered if he's have continued it. But I think he was burned out, felt relentlessy under pressure to produce, was concerned that the quality was slipping (NO way!).
My favorite comic of all time. Watterson is a master. I still cry when I go back and read the series when Calvin finds the sick baby raccoon... Feel all the feels. The Snowmen Calvin built were the BEST.
Bsu Witt The Snow Goons.
Rise of the killer monster snow goons!!!
Aughhhh don't remind me of that raccoon!!! 😭😭😭
+Haz Pixels, Will Shoot The Horror of non-being weighed against the torment of existence. Sorry, just had to show of my useless knowledge.
Bsu Witt Parents walk by normal houses and nice snowmen. *Parents walk by their house and see a two-headed snowman with sharp teeth.* Had me dying!
Let's go exploring..... *tear*
😭😭😭😭😭
This is still the only comic that I read consistently.
Same
How? You should really red more comics as there's so many fantastic ones!
*childhood nostalgia intensifies*
Your profile picture matches this comment in such a strange way😆
BRAVO!!!!🤗
Hobbes is not real in my imagination, he really is real. Love you buddy!
How's it been calvin
Do you still watch youtube
Do you have a idea to go into the real world
Well I'm much better company then a human any day
@@hobbes8634 I'm a hobbes fan account 😳
My uncle died young. One of the few things I've got left of him is his Calvin And Hobbes collection. I got old enough to read them and understand them, and Watterson became one of my most beloved cartoonists ever, along Garaycochea, Quino and David Low. Pure innocent humor at its best. I will allways be able to know him by this comic.
K
lovely story. i also love Quino and wish he was better known. even without Mafalda, his work is equally genius as Watterston. nice to see someone mentioning him.
Elevated the medium. It’s aged incredibly well and it’s limited run is a plus because anyone can pick up the collection and read through the entire run with a definitive beginning and end all in a reasonable amount of time.
Watterson’s snowman creations are among the best strips EVER.
He said his daughter loves his stuffed Hobbes, but we all know he got that for himself. Hell, I may buy one and I’m 36.
the only reason i have subscribed to my newspaper because it still prints it.
Although I didn't grew up with the comic, I loved reading the Calvin and Hobbes comic strips through the books. I laughed my butt off when he pretends to be Stupendous Man, and when his dad tells him he's a baby from Sears. And I also cried when they found the sick raccoon, or the time when a bully pestered with Calvin and takes away his truck. It's a comic that I love to read, and will again and again. Get.Rid.Of.Slimy.girlS. best club ever! X^D
Also the ever-changing rules of Calvinball. My favorite was the "Very Sorry Song."
Really made me smile to hear the love in Ryan's voice for Calvin and Hobbes, and am glad to hear he's passing that love down to his kids. Simply put: Nailed it.
I'm a Boomer and 60. I grew up on Peanuts and Snoopy, etc. Always loved cartoons and cool animation. I read the newspaper cartoons daily. There were two of them that are about the only strips that could make me laugh out loud on a regular basis: Calvin and The Far Side. And when those two strips ended, they were the last of the great newspaper strips. And to think those same panels can still make me laugh so hard - well, it's really an amazing testimony to the quality, humor and wonderful imagination behind them. Strange, as now newspapers themselves are almost a relic from the 20th century.
Calvin & Hobbes were MY bedtime Stories.
TehMomo same
Any monsters under the bed? 😉
@@ERIK000000000 idk but smt under the bed is drooling
I discovered Calvin and Hobbes in the local public library, children's section when I was around 10 years old. At times I laughed SO HARD that I got raised eyebrows, but I didn't care. Much respect from Germany to Mr. Watterson for this rare gem and timeless masterpiece. o7
Better than mostly any comic ever created...... Including manga
You forgot to grab your popcorn *hands it over*
Calvin and Hobbes is the best manga ever.
No arguments there.
@@aaronvazquez5286 Christ, now I'm imagining an anime-tropes laden Calvin and Hobbes. Like, Rosalyn approaching Stupendous Man and Calvin Jo-Jo poses and says, "Oh? You're approaching me?"
Calvin & Hobbes came to me in stages. As a kid I really enjoyed the idea of a kid and his stuffed tiger he perceives as alive even though I only understood about half the references. Now, as an adult, I get the remainder of jokes I didn’t understand then
Always interesting to me that people represent Hobbes as being in Calvin's imagination, whereas Watterson intentionally made it open to interpretation. There's always that famous panel where Calvin decides he wants to be an escape artist, so Hobbes ties him to a chair with his arms pinned tightly to his sides and the knot in the middle of Calvin's back, making it impossible for Calvin to have done it himself. He even goes on to have Calvin's dad acting utterly baffled how Calvin did it to himself, and refuses, of course, to accept Calvin's explanation that Hobbes did it.
Just bought the entire collector's edition with all four volumes and it was my dream to have them all ever since middle school. Can't read that thing without smiling. I wish I could meet Walterson in person and have him sign it for me.
I always thought that the best part of Calvin & Hobbes was the character interactions between Calvin and the other human characters, specifically his parents and the girl in his class. The interactions between Hobbes and Calvin stole the show, but the character relationships were really well crafted. Calvin's parents weren't the irritating Cailou-Parents archetypes we see in garbage these days. His parents loved him, but were often exhausted by his constant shenanigans. If u recall properly, there were even a few strips where the parents expressed a desire to turn back time and get a dog instead of having a kid. I remember thinking that it was unusual to see parents behave the way they did, at the time, in anything other than a live-action sitcom.
Man i'm still re-reading them over and over. They really are great!
One of? THE best
It was the winter of 2012 when I first discovered Calvin and Hobbes. I remember fishing through some books I found under my grandpa's table and finding a book titled "There's Treasure Everywhere!" Obviously this book was a collection of Calvin and Hobbes strips. I'll tell you I was quite intrigued and found all these comics to be hilarious. 2013 rolls along and my mom buys me my own Calvin and Hobbes book: "The Days Are Just Packed". I found that one so much funnier than the previous and I recall bringing the book to school every day. I mama fed to get my best friend into the series, and then many more around me. Now I've found myself zipping through several C+H comic strips a day, and I must say it's astounding how many great ideas Bill Watterson had. Calvin and Hobbes will always be the greatest.
The best of the best. Pure comedic genius. I still have the complete collection. I still get a good laugh when I read them...
Absolutely adore Calvin and Hobbes, have all the books. My dad read them to me when I was growing up since birth, I've been reading them all my life and I gain a new appreciation and love for them everytime I read them. One day I'll read them to my kids and hopefully they'll have the same joy and love for it as a I did when I was little. My dad even wanted to name me Calvin, but my mom wouldn't let him, but he convinced her give me a name "kinda close to Calvin."
Grew up reading it - Brilliant comic
Every list I have ever found of the greatest comics of all time this always number 1
And will remain so. The race for others start from second slot.
The nostalgia is literally painful right now. My stomach hurts! 😊😕
An iconic comic and its exceptionally talented and ingenious, creative artist......the world is better for him and his creation......a master of wit and wisdom....!
One of my favorite comics
Such a deep and inside look at the mind of a young boy which is why so many can relate to it and appreciate what Bill put down on paper so vividly. I have all of them but did not know about the new book with his interview so I will definitely be giving that a read.
Love this book, grew up with this book and im guessing a lot of others had the same experience. Epic Man =D
ah man, calvin and hobbes... so much nostalgia watching this video.
"one of"… no, this is by far the best comic ever produced by anyone and so far out ahead of anything else there's nothing even in 2nd or 3rd place.
I’ve read them all like 7 times over again
I loved Calvin and Hobbes! I actually kind of want a C&H movie honestly...
majinraptor I think the video "Gritty Reboots" made sums it up well....Though I highly doubt Hollywood would be THAT dumb to go THAT far.
JoJoXGamer a movie would never be any good however they did it
I agree that they would most likely screw everything up. It wold lose all of its charm.
Hhcuebciw Uhhbadch Of course it would never live up to the comics, but if they did it could be done in a Pulp Fiction style, so that it's just bunch of stories mixed into one.
Nah people are too negative nowadays. Maybe not a full 2 hour movie. But something can work
Calvin and Hobbes (for me) _IS_ the best comic of all time.
Calvin and Hobbes>Peanuts.
i like both.
Liam Wilson Don't get me wrong, I love Peanuts too, of course, but like these guys said, Calvin and Hobbes wasn't licensed and ran only for a short timespan of ten years. With the cultural phenomenon Peanuts has become with half a century worth of strips, all these tv specials, movies, games, clothes and all other merchandise, it can just get a little bit overwhelming sometimes. Plus, I always feel bad for Charlie Brown.
Calvin and Hobbes>Peanuts>Garfield
*Anyday.*
Calvin and Hobbes is great but Peanuts is legendary
I LOVE YOU CALVIN AND HOBBES. Bill Watterson you are a *GENIUS*
When I read Calvin and Hobbes I low key remember when I used to read as a young kid and tear up as to how much time has passed
Right in the childhood!!
these days, i feel like calvin and hobbes would make for great animated shorts.
Loved Calvin and Hobbes since I was a kid
Best comic. I play with a stuffed bear named Darwin. He's my Hobbes.
I love that you guys did this video. I woke up this morning, watched this video, and was immediately taken back two decades when my face was buried into one of Watersons books.
I agree this was the best comic ever. We are the last generation that read the comics in the paper. I distinctly remember reading this in the high school library in the Florida Times Union every day. Time moves on, uphill both ways, blah blah. But it is fun to remember reading this comic, listening to Guns and Roses, followed by Men at Work, and then the guy that did " Somebody's watching me" song.... :)
Best comic ever
My shelves are full of Peanuts and Calvin & Hobbes. It's the greatest shelf in my house
The best thing I ever read.
C&H is indeed one of the best comics that ever was.
I found out about calvin and hobbes 1 year ago in the school libary
My big three as a kid was Calvin and Hobbes, Asterix and Obelix, and Tintin. But C&H will always hold the top spot.
I looooooove Calvin and Hobbes
I have been trying to find the complete set of C&H but no luck :( I loved them so much!
let's get some nostalgia up in here
My favourite comic
I think my favorite Calvin and Hobbes books are, "The Days Are Just Packed", "Night of the Living Babysitter", and "Scientific Progress goes, 'BOINK!'"
ChozoSR388 i liked Weirdo's from another planet
Kay Red Ah, that's a good one, too!
That's "Revenge of the Baby-Sat", not "Night of the Living Babysitter".
ChozoSR388 mines snow goons, or the 50th anniversary edition
ChozoSR388 tenth anniversary sorry
So weird. I saw a jeep today on my way home from work that had a wheel cover for its spare tire on the back that said "It's a magical world Hobbes ol'buddy.... Let's go exploring." Couple hours later looking up the final Calvin and Hobbes comic finds this.
I have the complete series in hard and soft cover...love calvin and hobbes
Best of all time
I read Calvin and Hobbes growing up. Im going to have to buy the anthology.
Bill Waterson rules!!
Watterson was the illustrator and A child prodigy was the writer. The writer wrote the screenplay for Star Wars before his first birthday. His initials are A. M. and can be found in the symbols behind Darth Vader when he lifts up the guy by the neck. The M is in the negative space and is upside down on the right symbol. His mother's maiden name is Perkins. Porkins from Star Wars and Susie Derkins are one letter from the truth. Many popular movies and TV series have been written by him as well. He was very prolific until... his retirement.
The best ever!
Truely the best comic 234 pages in 1 hour true lover
My favourite cartoon
i feel the need to have EVERY SINGLE CALVIN AND HOBBES BOOK EVER MADE
Calvin adn Hobbes and Zits were my favorite
C&H definately the best comic of all time... I think the message always was, it's a beautiful life and it's going to be okay...
It's a shame they won't ever make a movie of it
I found a comment that said that calvin and hobbes would make great for animated shorts and now I want calvin and hobbes animated shorts
Anyone besides me up for the idea of a Spaceman Spiff video game? I know it may never happen, but admit it, it sounds like a cool idea.
Calvin and Hobbes and Deadpool were the only comics I ever got in to
Don't wanna brag or anything, but I have the same birthday as my favorite artist. (Bill Watterson)
...and always will be!
I wish they made a movie or cartoon on them
Somebody get Watterson a Pulitzer for calvin and Hobbes
The book is called "Exploring Calvin and Hobbes: An Exhibition Catalogue."
Ah! So that's why there was never any movie, shows and games based on the comic. Much respect.
Spoiler alert: The other three co hosts listen to Ryan geek out and drone on from 0:11-4:34, but don't worry he comes back in full force at 5:58.
Wish they had officially licensed the tiger. Would love to give the set with the tiger. Every kid needs an imaginary friend --- because ultimately your imagination will be your best or worst friend.
Innocence and an imaginary friend growing up together. Thanks
Best IGN video
I'M GEEKING OUT MAAANNNNNN!!!!!!!🤓😁🤗
Best snowman ever
If you guys love calvin and Hobbes you should watch Reaching autumn it will change your whole perspective on the comic
As a kid I always asked my parents to buy the Garfield magazine, only because it always had a few pages of Calvin and Hobbes in it. Of course i love Garfield too, but C&H is way better...
1:02 Dad of the year
How did you get the Hobbes stuffed tiger?
It's scary how many dislikes there are.
Can somebody please give me the name to the new book with the Bill Waterson interview please?
Exploring Calvin and Hobbes: An Exhibition Catalogue
how do u get hobbes
I love this series and could relate to Calvin a lot,Hobbes as well, but in all seriousness I would NEVER want to have a kid like him.
I can't believe IGN is right for once
I love Calvin and Hobbes but I would put it at a tie for first with Gary Larson's The Far Side
An equal to Krazy Kat, Pogo, and Peanuts.
I ❤
did someone respond to the fact that Watterson turned down all licensing opportunities with "that's embarrassing" ....?!?!? if that's true, the person who said that misses the point entirely
