I also was blessed to witness this pair of musical demigods perform at Sydney Town Hall, must have been 1968. They performed a similar tabla banter to this although from memory Ravi was "teasing" Alla with complex vocalisations which Alla immediately played on the tabla. An amazing concert and even more amazing ... an audience of merely around 200 affectionados. Those were the days.

Any two musicians who do what these men did, communicating mostly through what they were improvising and making it seem as if it was all preplanned are ultimate masters from whom others should learn. Western Classical and its vast body of fixed work is the greatest man made creation. Even beyond it,however, is Indian classical, which is the bridge between man and God. This spontaneous improvisation is beyond man's thought-out creation. It is more like the deepest realization of music already within your soul, a realization obtained through a life time of devotion. But I agree with the sentiment of your comment. Keep listening bro! God sent us youtube!

The audience was so polished and well-mannered. When Pandit Ravi Shankar asked them to stop clapping and listen to the playing, they obeyed immediately. Shows how humble the two musicians are on the other hand. They didn't crave attention but wanted to present what they went there for. That's why they didn't care about the applause. That kind of humility should exist in all artists.

I was privileged to hear Ravi and Alla in a concert in Vancouver, BC in the early 70's. My respect for these two are beyond words.
It's amazing that you saw the true maestros perform, but might as well call them pandit ravi shankar and ustad Alla rakha. The term "pandit and ustad" are given to the highest degree of musicians in India. Cheers
Pls, address them as Pandit and Ustad to show some respect "beyond words" and with words.
RJ Whetstone: great concert at the Queen Elizabeth theatre in Vancouver, Canada!!! I remember Mr. Shankar speaking about gat in teen tal which is sixteen beats to the bar. My older brother took my friend and I as my bday gift. One of the best bday presents ever!!! 🇨🇦
Any two musicians who do what these men did, communicating mostly through what they were improvising and making it seem as if it was all preplanned are ultimate masters from whom others should learn. Their skills are rare, the products of long and diligent study. Far too few people today care to put in the time and effort to become such living treasures.
Shut up
People had passion.
To all my friends, pls stop addressing them as ravi and rakha, the term "pandit and ustad" are given to the highest degree of musicians in India. They are pandit ravi shankar and ustad Alla rakha
cbluenote , yes very true
Noted. Can you explain the different meaning and importance of Ustad vs. Pandit? I noticed when Yehudi Menuhin was introducing artists in English he translated both as ‘Mr.’
@MegaContented -- Dude, take a breather out there, would ya? Clearly, you are an Indian pretending to be a foreigner -- your English is not as good as you think it is. Worst of all, you are definitely not contented.
As long as the title clearly says Ravi Shankar and Alla Rakha -- that will be it. If you have a problem with people addressing them by their name that take it up with the the host of this channel. If you don't have a problem with Mohammed Rafi, and Kishore Kumar, and Manna Dey, and Yesudas, and Lata Mangeshkar, and Asha Bhonsle, you shouldn't have a problem with Ravi Shankar and Alla Rakha either.
@MegaContented -- Are you so discontent that your only hope for any self-respect is cheap talk? Unfortunately, that's your personal problem, not mine.
I know this is a ridiculous distinction to make, but I genuinely believe Indian music is the most advanced music of the human race.
You are right, it is a ridiculous distinction to make.
It might be true, but it is also dying out. There are a handful musicians who reach this plane of even understanding and following along with intricate taal signatures like 2/3/2/3 or raagas, let alone performing. There is barely any audience without this type of understanding, right?
@@sirajghosh ❤👍
@@just_an_empty_sign Ask your eldest to do a bit of impromptu child's play and you will come to know about the relative skill levels involved here.

Alla Rakha's greatest contribution to Indian classical music is making tabla respectable and taking this instrument to a higher plane (earlier it always played second fiddle to the vocalist/instrumentalist). Of course his other contribution is giving the world Zakir Hussein. I have been extremely lucky to see these legends live several times - starting from 1976.
And yet one more contribution that most of indians and pakistanis dont know. Roohi Bano Pakistan television PTV's most talented actress is his daughter. Zakir Hussain is Roohi's half brother.

That kind of humility should exist in all artists.
if there are past lives, surely one of mine took place in India, I have an immediate and profound connection with this music and these instruments that I cannot explain having not grown up hearing it at all

Quarantine spent well listening to this amazing concert of ustad Alla Rakha and Pandit Ravi Shankar 🙏
In our musical tradition, we respect the music, the musicians, the instruments and our Gurus and finally the audience. Without proper reverence, one cannot appreciate or learn this music.
I love how Ravi Shankar silences the audience after Rakha spoke the bols. It's like, wait, you have to listen to him PLAY the bols now.
I saw an old Pandit Ravi Shankarjis concert and I was shocked to see the great Jimi Hendrix in the audience enjoying the music by the MASTER!!!!!
There was a verbal sound for a particular hitting of the tabla... and he could speak a "tabla" language that could translate into music. Ravi Shankar is a genius of sound. Just pure genius.
I wish I had half the skill that this amazing percussionist had in his little finger.

I would have to say, that these are the most accomplished musicians on the planet, and I am not an opinion to be taken lightly. I have played every form of Western music from ( yes I can read music) classical, country, rock, jazz, heavy metal, blues, funk, fusion..etc...in order to make a living. I noted especially that such big people have not been helped by the government and remained almost as the poor and the needy that is very sad and noticeable issue and that needs to be reconsidered for such people who gave their life for the art and the cultural values to sustain and lived for ever. These people must be heard and counted for their concerns and be given respect and financial support not before their dying but at the age of their needs.
Lack of recognition and poor marketing of such incredible art is to blame.
Totally agree! What a great thought!
Ya! They have to leave India. We need to popularise classical music. There should be appreciation classes aired in youtube.
I agree but it would be stupidity to say they are poor. In fact they are very very rich. However richness is due to their own calibre. In India at present classical music is appreciated by only selected audience.Sponsorship by Govt. is lacking. More festivals should be organised. More publicity should be given to propagate Classical music.
Mohammed Baig No government wants to support great artists. The arts are a powerful force for societal change which threatens those in power. Governments fear their people embracing their own power. That is why governments hate artists, and why fascist states kill artists when they can.
Much love and Respect from British Columbia.
