  • I'm a born and bred Mancunian, United fan. This man is a legend in the true sense. He believed in working class solidarity and socialism without all the affectations of Marxist bullshit. A real football man. Dignified, respectful, visceral and made of the true right stuff.

  • A United fan here from a family of working class United fans. Liverpool are the team I hate the most, they are United's only genuine rivals, so I hate and respect them and their achievements. The first football book I ever read was Shankly's autobiography when I was about 9 or 10. The man was a genius, a hero, a leader, and a visionary. When you watch this video what comes across is how thoroughly decent, honest and driven he was, with the charisma of a film star. I imagine the Liverpool players would have run through brick walls for him. I look at modern 21st century football with its wealth and corruption and it disgusts me. RIP Bill Shankly you were one of the true greats.

  • As a Newcastle United fan of 40 years plus (i know...ouch & ha ha) i always remember how much Kevin Keegan praised "the boss" and tried to copy his style (and Keegan also did a great impersonation of Shanks). Phwoar, Shanks comes out with some great comments and quotes in this interview...A life coach. You would bust a gut for this man. ps. 1974 Cup Final memories come flying back..." Keegan 2 Highway 1 Liverpool 3 Newcastle None" drat, double drat and triple drat 😭

    • john tudor hallelujah the second half of that final is fantastic. The football played by Liverpool is fast-paced pressing, counter footy, very much like today's team. People say the game is totally different now, and that players then couldn't keep up. Well that second half, with a lead weight ball, says differently. It must be hard for you to look back to that era when Newcastle was the team, and them Liverpool the new boys and underdogs, to what you have now 😒 I hope you lot get a buyer soon, as I cant see Rafa staying if the ownership isn't sorted out. Rafa didn't have to stay after you went down, no one would have blamed him, as he was given the impossible task to keep you up, in 8 games iirc (i was at Anfield when we drew iirc, your fans was great that day) However, he stayed, brought you back up, and Ashley just fucked him, and the team over. If you lose Rafa, I do fear for Newcastle's future. He is the only thing the club has to go going for it atm. Well that, the great ground and your paying supporters. they have also been fucked over. It's ironic we (or I ) speak of Ashely, with his zero hour contracts, and fuck everyone approach, under a video of Bill talking of the socialist side of the football. Where did the days go? If you ain't got an oil baron owner, the chances of rising to the top are slim. So for that respect, we (Liverpool ) hope your new owner isn't too rich. 👍

    • John, I recently got hold of a dvd of that game and it was a superb game, comparable with anything today, yet we're hoodwinked to believe how much better football is played today by these young lads driving Bentley's on 200k a week....

  • From a Man Utd fan. Bill Shankly built up liverpool football club with his bare hands & look at all the great signings he made. Kevin Keegan Emlyn Hughes Steve Highway Ray Clemence he brought them all from lower division clubs and made superstars out of the whole lot of them. Shanks didnt have the luxury of the big cheque book back then. He didnt need to, his football brain was second to none . His likes will never be seen again. R.I.P Shanks.

He built from the ground up, an organic growth. The two greatest managers over the last few years spend spend spend and leave you wondering if Mo/Pep could take say a Leeds Utd to greatness without being state-owned or spending half a billion on a team. Shanks, Busby, Stein, Ferguson, Clough, all geniuses that the modern day manager would be proud to learn from.
