How to find the center and radius of a circle in standard form

2013 ж. 2 Мам.

Learn how to graph the equation of a circle by completing the square. Completing the square will allow us to transform the equation of a circle from general form to standard form. When the equation is in standard form we can identify the center and radius of the circle to graph to then graph the circle.

    • An easier approach is to divide 4x and -10y by (-2).. you’ll get (-2,5). Then you square root (-2) squared plus (5) squared - (-7) which will give you 6. Square the 6 and you’ll get 36. Now just put them in your equation. So it’s gonna be (x+2) squared plus (y-5) squared equals to 36.

Well, returning back to the center radius form, which is (x-h)^2 + (y-k)^2, substitute the h and k with the answer you got, which is positive 2 and negative 5. It will look like this: (x-2)^2+(y-(-5))^2 Negative times negative is positive. Hence, the answer (-2,5). Hope this helped :3

    @PollyCrown04@PollyCrown044 жыл бұрын
    • yeah, I know this is 2 months late, but if you are still interested, let me explain. we know that the equation's general formula is (x-a)^2 + (y-b)^2 = r^2, here, a is the x coordinate of center and b is the y coordinate of the center ( some use h and k instead of a and b), let me correct you that its not 2 and 5 but '-2' and 5. we can see that + 2 is in the position of -a. So from (x+2)²+(y-5)², the a(x cordin of center is -2 (not 2 because -minus of minus is +) and b (y cor of center) is 5. Sorry if this didn't clear your doubts ( i know I am not gd at explaining) and my bad english :), hv a gd day.

    • idk if you still care but remember the equation is (x-h)^2 + (y-k)^2 so to get (x+2)^2 like the equation in the video it must be (x- -2)^2 since negative and negative is positive and using that same thing on (y-k)^2 to get -5 it must be 5 since positive negative is negative.

    • @@professionalocchiolist4104 ok wait sorry. I just found out you have to factor out (x^2+4x+4). To factor, what makes up 4? That's 2+2. Second, what makes up 4? 2*2. So that would be written as (x+2)^2 :D
