It doesn't look very deep? What kind of wildlife would you expect to find in it?
@@maggiewright1781 Hi Maggie, it's deep (enough!) in the middle for toads and frogs tend to use shallow water for breeding, but there would be newts, dragonflies, damselflies and of course all the creatures that need insects or any mosquito larvae, such as larger insects, birds, amphibians and bats - they certainly take care of any likely mosquitoes :) Best wishes, Joel
In India, you do not have to do much to make a pond, all you need is one heavy rain, the rest is made by itself !! 🙃🙃
Haha! India has such natural beauty, we seem to have destroyed so much of ours in the UK, but hopefully people are gardening now with nature in mind rather than against it - thank you so much for your comment, appreciated :)
@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton ❤️❤️
In the Philippines too!😅😂 Now, thats what im going to do. Dig a little and wait for the heavy rain from June to Dec! Rain will make it deep enough.😁😁

It is Linda :) But we're not always so lucky - although quarry stones already on site would save a lot of haulage and cost ;) Best wishes, Joel
Lol
You and me both! Digging the foundation for my back garden extension was impossible for a mini digger. We had to constantly break up the stones with a jackhammer because the digger couldn't pull them up. It took 6 hours instead of 2. 😵
We have 1 foot of workable soil. It's awful.
All soils are workable im a kid and i did my pond thsts 4 metter long 2 metter wide and 1.2metter deep in a soil that my dad said it is too hard to do a pond in
the part where he was taking off the patch of grass is very satisfying to watch

Thank you so much - so sorry for the delay in replying to you, so many comments :) But when you have space for a pond you might find this YT series that I did helpful - it shows how to make the above pond in detail and applies to all sizes kzhead.info/sun/n6-rmrGubYaDn40/bejne.html I hope this is helpful to you - best wishes, Joel
Buy cheap land on a swamp, and dig a big gouge out of the middle, bottom-most part of your land. It will drain a lot of the swampy area into a pond-like area instead. Or wait until one of the trees in the swamp falls over, and it should look like a natural pond. Just dig it out more and you'll have a pond next to a fallen over tree's root ball. Likely already shaded because it is in a swamp with tall trees.
I live in an apartment in a city, it's all concrete around me, and yet, here I am binging this - I am transfixed by your videos, can't stop watching. Wishful thinking or living vicariously? I neither know nor care.

Absolutely this! There's a 3 part series on the channel, not timelapse, that shows how I made this pond and the reason for the methods used. Thanks ever so much - best wishes, Joel
Absolutely wish I was talented enough to pull this off!
I'd love to do this. We removed the one that was in our garden years ago because it attracted so many mosquitos to the garden. If we didn't get turned into a pepperoni pizza by the mosquitos I'd absolutely make one again. Edit: Also the cats kept on catching the frogs and they'd die very slowly :(
And here I was just thinking of digging a hole and putting some water in it. Wow, this is so amazing! You can tell this guy is the type of guy who does not shy away from a challenge. Beautiful pond!!
Thank you for taking the time to leave such a positive comment, it makes all the difference :) There is the 3 part instructional video for the making of this pond on the channel, rather than the timelapse here - I appreciate your positive comment as a lot of people don't bother looking at the pinned comment on how/why this method is used and would rather leave a negative comment, but rest assured it's the positive comments that make all the difference :) I hope it encourages you further and that you enjoy the channel "V" - best wishes to you, Joel

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton yep definitely: I decided to take more of an interest in my garden so watched all the episodes of Garden Rescue for ideas, eventually swayed by your other channel, The Butterfly Brothers, to go for wild-life. I let my grass and the weeds grow last year and was amazed by how much better it looked without me doing a thing. Next step is to experiment with multiple single seating areas connected by a small path, water placed somewhere, and adding my own plants in those areas where the weeds thrived. The fun part, which I didn't realize to start with, is that I get to experiment with the garden every year.

We have two ponds, one in front and one in back, built by the previous owner. While there was a learning curve to getting the maintenance right, we really love them now. The frogs at night are just amazing, and all kinds of birds visiting all day long.
Quick Question -- what do you do to prevent mosquitos? Would adding a small pump to keep the water moving help?
Hi Eleanor - thank you. The bats, birds, amphibians and larger insects (like dragonflies etc) will all feast on mosquitoes and their larvae. Also, re adding a pump, the native oxygenating plants, the floating leaved plants and low-nutrient subsoil used all keep the water aerated and clear :) There is a 3 part series on the channel showing in real-time how I made this pond and why the methods are used. Additionally, you might find this video helpful, it shows just a few of the many ponds created in this way, after they establish in a few weeks: kzhead.info/sun/natqp5uFjJqei6s/bejne.html Hope this helps Eleanor, best wishes - Joel

Soil looks very good
Thank you Ying - if you wanted to see why I use this method and how I made this pond, and why this soil is used you can see it in this 3 part series here: kzhead.info/sun/n6-rmrGubYaDn40/bejne.html Thank you for your comment - appreciated. Best wishes, Joel

Your wildlife pond so beautiful😍,you're amazing, love from Malaysia❤
Fatima Farm thank you so much. Great to hear from you guys in Malaysia! 😁👏👍
It's nice pond but should put some flow & filter so that murky water will turn gradually clear & encourage more bio oxygen dissolved so microsystem in the water it's self can support living things in there 😘
Hi Zahid - sorry I missed your reply - the footage is when the pond was just finished so needed a day or two to settle - there are oxygenator plants in the pond and these will keep it clear. If fish are introduced then definitely a filter of electric type of course as they can mess up a still pond - many thanks for your comment Zahid, best wishes to you - Joel
Your video has really helped me when I was building my giant Terrarium! Thanks a lot!
I've completed a pond like this earlier this year and I will never dig another one by hand 😀
I know the feeling well! This is one of very few dug by hand, but the client's garden had steep steps to the rear and a wheelbarrow was useless too, hence the bucket loads of soil! Best wishes, Joel
thats insane ive always wanted like a small pond in my backyard with frogs and birds living in my backyard one day i swear my dream will come true.
Thank you for sharing the video, very interesting, quite entertaining, adding useful knowledge🙏❤
Thank you, so much :) There is more detailed knowledge on the "How To" instructional videos on the channel, you may find this video of some of the ponds I have created, that are now established, helpful too - I really appreciate your comment :) kzhead.info/sun/natqp5uFjJqei6s/bejne.html Best wishes, and Happy New Year to you - Joel
A pond is a must for a wildlife garden. Mine is teaming with life. I've just put a video up about the frogs and frogspawn I filmed in mine last week.
Hey Mike - thank you, so sorry for the delay in acknowledging you, just trying to catch up with everyone's comments - so glad you've made a fabulous habitat for wildlife, it sounds like you're rewarded for all your efforts :) Best wishes, Joel
In my country you don't need to build a pond You can find natural ponds everywhere! Even on the middle of the highway street!
Wow, natural ponds are always best :)

Hello Joel, do you ever have a problem with water wicking? I've built my pond using your technique with the underlay over the buytl liner. The pond loses gallons of water a day. The underlay came up to the edge of the pond, I now think I should have tucked it down leaving 2" to 3" of buytl around the edge to prevent water wicking away into the surrounding soil through the underlay.
Hi there - out on site at the moment - please feel free to send some photos to hazelwoodlandscapes@hotmail.com and I'll see what I can do to advise :) Best wishes, Joel
You need a capillary barrier. Dig a ditch around the pond and cover it completely with the butyl liner, then fill it with gravel and stones.
Wow... !!! My best friend, Loved this video. Looking forward to see more. Awesome... Full watched.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate this. There are lots of videos on the channel and also a 3 part series on how I made this pond. Have a wonderful day - best wishes, Joel

Hi there! :) Thank you so much, I have had such great support from India and I'm very grateful - best wishes to you and yours - Joel
Hi Thank u for this great channel as I started to turn my garden to benefit the local wildlife. I did dig a large pond last August 2019 but before I can lay it with a pond Liner the Autumn rain started and as u know it hardly stopped all through autumn and winter and as my garden soil is Clay the pond was absolutely filled with about 3 feet of rain water. In February the pond was full of mating frogs and within the next 2 weeks the pond was full of eggs and right now full of tadpoles. Now my question if u can help me out I he grateful is: as the pond had no water loss (except through evaporation because of the heatwave we've had all through May) do I still need to place pond Liner or can I just leave it as clay based pond ? As I'm new to all this gardening and wildlife I dont want to disturb frogs; toads and Newts (I've seen small ones about the pond plants) that might have made their home? Should I drain the pond after all the tadpoles leave the pond; please help as I'm in a dilemma now specially as it started to rain again for the past few days and the pond water level gone up again . Cheers
Hi Reza. Thanks for getting in touch I’m pleased you are enjoying the channel 😊 As for your pond, if it managed to hold water over the last couple of months, chances are it may well survive the summer with no liner. In the wild, some great ponds are ones that actually dry out in the summer months, after most amphibians have finished their life cycle. Newts and frogs in particular often leave ponds later in the year to hunt defied they hibernate. In essence, I’d wait and see what July / August brings, as you can always line the pond in the autumn. Hope that helps 😊
@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton Thank u for ur reply. Can u plz explain why do we actually need pond liner for? If my pond seem to be good at keeping hold of rain water; can I just leave it natural clay based specially as I've noticed bees have made holes in the clay and they are constantly in/out if the holes. Cheers
Really appreciate about your dedication towards it. I am also making a pond for my guppy fishes. Thanks for this video. Best wishes from India.

Did you just use the soil you excavated in the pond or did you use a low nutrient substrate?
A bit of both Krisztian! 😁 I wasn’t able to excavate enough for the pond, so imported some low nutrient soils
Love and appreciate your hard work
Prachi Singh thank you so much for leaving a comment. It’s so encouraging to hear your thoughts 😊🙏
Great efforts and respect to this Man who single handedly completed the work. But lil disappointed with the end result. The pond-look could have been more pleasant.
Hi Sachin - thank you so much. I didn't have time to stay to film this client's pond when it was established - however if you wanted to see how these ponds I create look after a few weeks, when the oxygenating plants have cleared the water and the margin plants are established, you might find these ponds more pleasing :) kzhead.info/sun/natqp5uFjJqei6s/bejne.html Best wishes - Joel
