    • @@maggiewright1781 Hi Maggie, it's deep (enough!) in the middle for toads and frogs tend to use shallow water for breeding, but there would be newts, dragonflies, damselflies and of course all the creatures that need insects or any mosquito larvae, such as larger insects, birds, amphibians and bats - they certainly take care of any likely mosquitoes :) Best wishes, Joel

    • Buy cheap land on a swamp, and dig a big gouge out of the middle, bottom-most part of your land. It will drain a lot of the swampy area into a pond-like area instead. Or wait until one of the trees in the swamp falls over, and it should look like a natural pond. Just dig it out more and you'll have a pond next to a fallen over tree's root ball. Likely already shaded because it is in a swamp with tall trees.

I let my grass and the weeds grow last year and was amazed by how much better it looked without me doing a thing. Next step is to experiment with multiple single seating areas connected by a small path, water placed somewhere, and adding my own plants in those areas where the weeds thrived. The fun part, which I didn't realize to start with, is that I get to experiment with the garden every year.

    • Hi Eleanor - thank you. The bats, birds, amphibians and larger insects (like dragonflies etc) will all feast on mosquitoes and their larvae. • Hello Joel, do you ever have a problem with water wicking? I've built my pond using your technique with the underlay over the buytl liner. The pond loses gallons of water a day. The underlay came up to the edge of the pond, I now think I should have tucked it down leaving 2" to 3" of buytl around the edge to prevent water wicking away into the surrounding soil through the underlay.

  • Hi Thank u for this great channel as I started to turn my garden to benefit the local wildlife. I did dig a large pond last August 2019 but before I can lay it with a pond Liner the Autumn rain started and as u know it hardly stopped all through autumn and winter and as my garden soil is Clay the pond was absolutely filled with about 3 feet of rain water. In February the pond was full of mating frogs and within the next 2 weeks the pond was full of eggs and right now full of tadpoles. Now my question if u can help me out I he grateful is: as the pond had no water loss (except through evaporation because of the heatwave we've had all through May) do I still need to place pond Liner or can I just leave it as clay based pond ? As I'm new to all this gardening and wildlife I dont want to disturb frogs; toads and Newts (I've seen small ones about the pond plants) that might have made their home? Should I drain the pond after all the tadpoles leave the pond; please help as I'm in a dilemma now specially as it started to rain again for the past few days and the pond water level gone up again . Cheers

    • Hi Reza. Thanks for getting in touch I’m pleased you are enjoying the channel 😊 As for your pond, if it managed to hold water over the last couple of months, chances are it may well survive the summer with no liner. In the wild, some great ponds are ones that actually dry out in the summer months, after most amphibians have finished their life cycle. Newts and frogs in particular often leave ponds later in the year to hunt defied they hibernate. In essence, I’d wait and see what July / August brings, as you can always line the pond in the autumn. Hope that helps 😊

    • @@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton Thank u for ur reply. Can u plz explain why do we actually need pond liner for? If my pond seem to be good at keeping hold of rain water; can I just leave it natural clay based specially as I've noticed bees have made holes in the clay and they are constantly in/out if the holes. Cheers
