The history of anti-Asian hate crimes in America

2024 ж. 25 Мам.
127 338 Рет қаралды

While hate crimes in this country increased last year by two percent overall, hate crimes against Americans of Asian and Pacific Island descent rose by 146 percent, with the Trump administration's use of racist rhetoric during the pandemic blamed by some for the rise in violence. History shows that Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders have had to weather this wave of discrimination and scapegoating many times before. CBS News correspondent Weijia Jiang reports.

    • The country is barbaric? SOME people are barbaric. Remember this: Asian countries like China, Japan and South Korea have virtually no immigrants. Meanwhile the USA has 20 million Asian immigrants 🗽 which place is truly xenophobic then?

    • I don’t condone racism of any kind, but I do find it a bit hypocritical of Asians to point out the Anti-Asian racism in America while ignoring the enormous amount of racism directed at foreigners in China, Japan, South Korea, etc. Asian countries for the most part have no interest in multiculturalism, have the strictest immigration laws to keep their respective countries “pure”, and are intolerant of foreigners joining their communities, especially a family member marrying a foreigner. Look up biracial couples on KZhead who discuss how their Asian parents disowned them for marrying a foreigner. I know America is imperfect but many Asian countries are far worse when it comes to race relations. For the most part, we’ve opened our arms and granted citizenship to tens of millions of Asian immigrants, the same cannot be said of their homelands. So before getting angry at this country, think about how a foreigner would feel in your country of origin.

    • @@lewstone5430 I already said that. I’m not excusing America’s racism at all. For the third time, all racism is horrible. My comment is a reaction to all the comments I see saying what a barbaric place America is for treating Asians like this when reality Asian countries are just as bad or even worse when it comes to being racist. They don’t even allow immigrants. What’s more racist than that? So my point is we should all be saying racism is a worldwide problem not just an American problem. Look at how South Koreans treated only 300 refugees into their country just a couple of years back. They couldn’t have been more racist to them. America on the other hand is plenty racist but we at least have a history of allowing millions of refugees into this country.

My husband and I watched reruns of series that are 20 or 30 years old in 2020 to pass the time during Covid lock down, and it made me sad and disgusted to see that discrimination is one of several topics that those series tried to bring to the forefront of our consciousness back then…and we still haven’t resolved any of them. It isn’t right to pass this on to the next generation (our children, grand kids, nieces, nephews, cousins…). Trump has made several attacks on her in response to her line of questioning: On June 15, 2018, Jiang asked President Trump why he felt North Korea no longer posed a nuclear threat to which he raised his hand and said "Quiet" before remarking to another person, "She's so obnoxious". On September 26, 2018, Jiang was told to "sit down" after repeatedly asking President Trump about Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. On March 17, 2020, Jiang reported that a "White House official referred to Coronavirus as the 'Kung-Flu' to my face." On April 3, 2020, in response to Jiang's question about Jared Kushner's use of "our" to describe the federal government's stockpile of medical supplies, President Trump called it a "nasty question." On April 19, 2020, when questioned on why President Trump did not warn Americans about the virus sooner, Jiang was told to "just relax" and to "keep your voice down". On May 11, 2020, Jiang questioned why there was an emphasis on competitively comparing coronavirus testing, President Trump responded "Don't ask me. Ask China that question." Jiang responded "Sir, why are you saying that to me, specifically?" to which Trump replied "I am not saying it specifically to anybody. I am saying it to anybody who would ask a nasty question like that." Trump abruptly left the press conference soon after this interaction as CNN White House Correspondent Kaitlan Collins was turned down from asking her question.

  • What makes America great? We acknowledge our mistakes and our less than stellar past openly and we then improve ourselves and rise from it stronger. It is never an easy road and it does not happen overnight due to forces always acting on the dark side.

  • I think the racism/discriminatory methodology and mechanism (alienate exclude condescend slander isolate .etc) we can see them being used not only in racist situations but Asian on Asian hate and all forms of discriminations(classism elitism.etc) these are also popular tactics used by female bullies.

  • The story omitted the 2017 incident when an Asian was dragged from an United Airlines plane, remembered by United CEO line: airline had to ‘re-accommodate’ passenger. An Asian was chosen among all the other passengers. Not white, not black, not Hispanic. Why an asian ? Why CHINESE ? Because easier to Harass ? to violate their rights ? Because they don't speak out to complain and challenge ? Because they don't fight back ? If you don't remember the story....United Airlines committed fraud by overselling tickets, and had to hide behind their crime by throwing someone out of their plane. And they chose an Asian, a Chinese customer. The CHINESE passenger without a ticket, a contract for United to provide service, would not be allowed in the plane in the beginning.

  • What she said at the the end there is completely true, this country was built on immigrants, Americas racism stems from a long history of misunderstanding, you have to think, at the time they had no idea what other kinds of people we’d find in the world and therefor we’d haven’t the slightest clue what they’re capable of or what the could potentially bring. I do believe that asian history should be taught in schools, it could be something that would bring not only our country together but maybe it could be a step to bringing the rest of the world together at long last #universalpowers
