  • I'm sorry to say this but paying 500 - 600 dollars plus disks plus ram and not to be able to play a 10 seconds hevc video is ridiculous. It adds a mental burden to the user's mind to find and play only h.264 videos... Synology screwed its customers in sooo many ways. 2 core cpu, not graphics card, only synology memory, only synology ssds, only 1gb ethernet, expensive 10gbt extention cards.... Thanks for the video my dude!

  • Thanks so much, Rob. I learned a lot about limitations. Makes me wonder what the bit rate limitations are on my 920+. Thought the buffering during 4k web- based playback was due to slow upload speed. Perhaps is the 920+ itself.

  • a very good discussion. I think it would be very good for your audience and newer ones as well if you made a list of the major set top boxes, major phone or chips in phones, and whether they can decode hevc and 4k hevc. Like shield, cube, google tv dongle, fire tv, iphone chip, pixel chip (i forgot what both run on), snapdragon xyz version. Then you can just point people to the page or maybe a shared google drive doc so they'd have understanding as to if they device they'd be sending a file to can natively transcode and make sound purchasing decisions.

  • AMD has many affordable, power-sipping APUs that have strong VEGA integrated graphics. If Synology paid extra $20 on its CPU, DS723+ would have been great for everything. They lost their own reputation by this 2023 release.

    • They are so close to being great but they just won’t go there. My 1515+ has always been under powered but has worked well for many years as a photo share with family and a file server. But, it sucks as a music server because of the quality of sound and I can’t believe how little progress they have made on video playback. I’m really struggling with this because I could build a better machine in every way but have the headache of learning Linux and introducing another OS into my home.

    • Toss in a few more bucks for USB Gen2 and 2.5GBE (like everyone else did a long while ago). They went so terribly cheap for maximum markup and then they force you to use their way over priced stuff to make the product useable at a very heavy handed not to mention nose bleed cost... The world is in recession and people need a good reason to spend money, imho these guys just blew it. No matter what they do now the damage is done, and it will take time for some to come back if they are enticing enough.

    • @@km3481 Thanks K M. I’ll probably do the same this week. Appreciate the advice. Definitely time to make a change. I’m sending my 1515+ out for motherboard upgrades, to try and keep it as a backup device for a while longer but want to get a new box setup and ready before sending it out.

  • I watched a lot of your videos and the best solution for people wanting Synology and also want to do things like Plex, is to just run Plex on a separate device that is more designed for this. I don't use Plex, but run Channels DVR that does do transcoding in some situations. I run it on a 10 year old Mac Mini which is a totally silent inexpensive box that relies on the Synology NAS for 20-30TB of storage. Let the NAS do what the NAS does well, and run CPU intensive processes on something else. This should outperform running it on any NAS. Maybe a good test for you to do in the future is to compare Plex running on a NAS (any of them) with Plex running on a Mini or NUC, and using the NAS just for storage. I'm guessing that will perform better.

    • if that's the case then the customer would've simply purchase any older and basic Synology NAS such as the J series instead of Plus series. The thing is the Plus supposed to have more powerful CPU and supports more usecases for the price premium. heck, even my 6 years old DS216J can do a better job and comes with 2 USB ports LMAO. in short, Synology screwed their customer over with the 2023 release

  • Synology just handed the home market to QNAP. I have a DS-920+ but won’t be replacing it with a NAS that does not transcode. Even if your local playback hardware can handle H.265, try it at your friends house over the public Internet, where it will probably transcode due to server side upload speed limits. I like DSM, but not that much!

    @marklewus5468@marklewus5468 Жыл бұрын
    • Agreed, anyone with a diverse media collection and multiple playback hardware options as well as remote playback. Transcoding will be used more than not.

    @sinansinan80@sinansinan80 Жыл бұрын
  • Forgive the stupid question, but for the 4k trailers if you were playing them on say the Plex app on the Chromecast with Google Tv, you wouldn’t encounter any of the buffering issues since no transcoding is needed right?

  • I can see the DS923+ tempting a power user with no interest in video, getting four bays, RAID 5 and the 4Gb ram. But the DS723+ is only slightly cheaper for a lot less capability. Who is this marketed at? I think we might see a DS725+ by the end of 2024, complete with embedded graphics. Unless the lower end 2023 plus series have something on the way.....a replacement for the Play series maybe.

    • I agree they eventually will release igu system sometime, they should have released it first. I get it that DSM is a nice os and all, but Synology is hitting up their users for every squeeky penny they can get. I think their heavy handedness is the bigger problem, that perception will haunt them long after they release a celeron based box...

  • I should give up on flogging this particular dead horse. Its rubbish for home users. No integral graphics so its basically useless. Who's gonna risk those times when you need that IG chip. Its like buying a car with only a handbrake. It will stop...... but......

    @topgazza@topgazza Жыл бұрын
    • Im sorry to inform you but our 2023 cars no longer need hand brakes, with our engine performance system ver 7.4 most of our drivers are able to carefully come to a complete stop by monitoring their accelerator usage a bit. Now if you want to have that feature we can sell you a proprietary system upgrade with the half height Brembo Big brake Kit, Right now its on sale for only 39,000 more to add to your purchase.

  • 100 mbps is not crazy, my 4k remux of "eternal sunshine of a spotless mind" is 93 mbps on average. I do have a shield pro on my main TV, but not all my devices can direct play everything nor all of them are 4k (my cellphone and laptop are 1080p). I don't want to have 100% CPU usage just to play a single file. My GTX 1650 does this at 1-3% usage using nvenc reading a 5tb usb 3 drive, it's still a better option to configure my local PC as "wake on LAN" to play content.

  • You always focus on 4K and HEVC. What about transcoding of H.264 Bluray to mobile due to limited bandwidth? This is a far more frequent use case for Plex users watching their server remotely…

    @voyager72@voyager72 Жыл бұрын
    • Good question. This was my Plex video test scheme for 2 years (see any Plex test I did front about 2020 onwards). In those tests I tested conversions/transcoding of content to 480p, 240p and 160p. The issues was the video length and that, catch 22, people complained about the inclusion of transcoding ("who even needs this???" - a quite these, that I had to respond to alot). Also, people wanted more 4K for future proofing and a larger range of 4K test. So, in order to keep the Plex videos to atm acceptable length (too long, people leave, video suffers on YT, time better spent on other projects), I went with the most requested features/changes. I'll see if I can re ad a few in future tests bud

      @nascompares@nascompares Жыл бұрын
    • @@nascompares thank you Rob! Perhaps I am an edge case by your viewers' standards. In the *very rare* occasion that I have a video that doesn't play well (like unsupported codecs / extreme bitrate etc.) on my LAN from my DS920+ to my Apple TV 4K (which plays almost everything natively), I perform off line transcoding using Handbrake. But my personal use case of watching from the train / hotel / holiday etc. is indeed more relevant to me.

      @voyager72@voyager72 Жыл бұрын
  • Synology really went out of their way to remove one of the only features that home users care about....hardware transcoding. I hope the Ugreen NASync has good enough software support and apps to kick Synology and Qnap in the asses.

  • Hmmm ..... ; In a nutshell, DS?23+ don't-dos real-time transcoding well at-least compared to the DS?20+. However none-trancoding multi-media pretty-much works fine. Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ???Hows-dos I avoid real-time multi-media transcoding then (ex: don't curse the darkest but light a candle)??? For ex: anticipate all desired multi-media formats/standards & transcode each multi-media file ahead-of-time ; off-load transcoding to a laptop/desktop when available ; transcoding within SSD storage ; profinity/throwing-thing/praising at the DS?23+ ; complain/whine to Synology until they fix the darn problem ; etc ;)
