    • I've seen the word used alot in American theatre and I've even seen the word (campy) in mainstream movie/video game reviews before. People in America have used "campy" to describe very gaudy, over the top, cheesy cinema. I think people know of the word and understand it's meaning in certain contexts but, they probably don't understand it here due to the fashion context. Also they probably don't get the full scope/origin of the term.

Its supposed to be so over the top that its laughable, synthetic and ridiculous. If it doesn’t look like it would fit into any of the dr suess live film adaptations, its not camp.

The whole buzz about the Met Gala is seeing how the celebrities will interpreted the theme through their outfits, it's fashion at its best. If they were to come dressed like any other charity event, it wouldn't be as popular as it is. Plus, they're celebrities. They make so much money, they may spend thousands of dollars on the outfit but they make millions more every single day.
