Patreon CEO Gives BAD ADVICE

2022 ж. 31 Там.
29 103 Рет қаралды

Every few months I feel like I hit a limit - like I’m accumulating unending change, ongoing projects, and disarray, and I’m giving it everything I have but barely keeping up. After talking with hundreds (thousands?) of creators over the years, I’ve learned that I’m not alone in that feeling - it’s quite common for creative people to have a sense that life is an onslaught of chaos and obligation. So I wanted to put together a talk to explain what I do about that feeling - and how I get to the other side.

  • I am too scared of success and my inner saboteur says I cannot be, despite creating every day and feeling I have something to contribute. I have created five or six Patreon accounts over the years and always feel guilty for charging for my creative. Even now, I give most of it away. Thank you for this amazing movie. Extremely inspiring. Made me get my ipad out and paint. Peace✌️Love❤️Doodles✏️

  • The bell curve for human attributes is brilliant. I've had this on my mind a lot recently -- the changes that will make one person's life vastly better is the exact opposite of what the next person needs. When unhelpful, universal life advice ranges from irrelevant to actively harmful. It helps both the speaker and listener to be aware of this dynamic so they can compensate or qualify advice.

  • The customized design-problem solving I think is totally brilliant. I gotta screen capture that list of questions, and tailor them a bit. That's exactly how my brain works too. I especially loved you talking about how writing helps you escape circular thought patterns. I'm going to explore that even more than I already was. Thank you so much for this. Helpful for me as a musician, a parent, and as a human in general.

  • I totally did not realize that Jack created Patreon! I've been a Pomplemoose follower for like 10 years! Love you guys! If you're still the CEO, can you explain why Patreon is essentially a platform that supports MAPs? There are some creators who have been kicked off for non hateful "hate speech" that wasn't actual hate speech, nor did it even take place on the Patreon platform, and yet there are creators still on there who are downright pedos and creeps. Make it make sense, Jack. Is this one of those custom design problems you can solve?

  • 🙏What an absolutely lovely talk. There’s a point in 40 weeks about how you value anything higher when it’s been hard to get to. A Big Mac has pretty low value, where a home cooked meal has much a higher value. To yourself of course. 40 weeks call it friction. The higher friction the higher value and enjoyment…

  • Personally, as a patron of several artists on Patreon, I still prefer the per-"thing" model. But I will concede that since many of the artists prefer the per-month schedule, it's a good option to have for them. I just hope you never get rid of the original option! That does still work best for many artists, for exactly the reasons you thought… and more. Great video! Advice, non-advice, everything. I actually think the part about figuring out what gets me into an inspired mood, and then intentionally replicating that, will help a lot. As for the rest, I don't think any of your "advice" was bad, and much of the other stuff is still good and relevant to me. But taking it all as those individual data points, and knowing it won't all be the right advice for myself , is, itself, great advice. ("Fuck you, Jack!") I think I'm fairly good at filtering out what's good for me and what isn't so relevant or applicable; but either way, I just like hearing about others' experiences, because it does give me data points to construct a better image of what I guess could be called "The Whole". So thank you for that; it's _all_ interesting and helpful, whether it's directly useful in my own situation or not.

    @Dan-Black@Dan-Black Жыл бұрын
    • it's totally a great idea, per thing. I'd even love a "tip jar", pick a thing, and drop money, no strings attached. per month is such a cold old model, I have no idea why anyone would want to add more suscription after energie, internet, taxes, yada yada. but hey it's me, glad it works. Glad if "per thing" or "tip jar" can exist too.

      @Journeymanlive@Journeymanlive Жыл бұрын
    • @@Journeymanlive Yeah, a tip jar would be cool… though, admittedly, for the ones I'm already supporting in a recurring commitment, I doubt I'd use it much. Maybe for others, though, that I don't support in the recurring model. And maybe even my regular ones now and then, like for the ones that I wish I could afford to give more regularly, but at least I could give them an extra bonus every once in awhile.

      @Dan-Black@Dan-Black Жыл бұрын
    • @@Dan-Black yes flexibility, dig it? drop something. I'm surprised about the monthy model being so prevalent, I guess we may now live in a world of routine, Netflix, and all things in boxes, pre-paid, link to you account. But there is no way I get some indie, traveller, crazy people to monthly subs. I love busking, and originally Patreon was kinda of that, digitally, like 2$ per song. GREAT original idea from Jack. Anyway the more ways to feed artists we like, the better.

  • Do you guys (perhaps you specifically, Jack) have a second-in-command type or a COO type around you? Almost every part of what you're saying has been primary drivers of team burnout, or these sort of personally revelatory systems that you seem to have to come up with on your own to sustain the things you really want to do, and these questions you're asking yourself and the team around you... these are things that 2iC types do naturally and are energized BY. Actually, my co-author and I are writing a book we're calling "How to be Second" about people we call "Seconds" talking about those types of humans. (Tend to be more in the shadows, curious, generalist/operational, makes plans and processes, runs the stuff but wants someone with a big idea to inspire them, etc - think Batman and Robin as the dynamic duo and Alfred as the Second-in-command.) Curious if you've ever looked into that or have people like that around you.

I grew up in the 80s. Even far leftists would routinely say: I disagree with what you say, but defend to the death your right to say it. I recall the controversy of censoring crude rap music. Where we believe in free speech for porn and filth - but not for the free exchange of actual ideas, apparently. Not to mention a design contest for logo, rather than paying an artist? a 99 designs? Ethics = 0. Yeah. This guy should not be held up as a high bar.
