One of the best outcomes of flying, any doubt go around
A 'go around'. happens a lot on windy days. Anything that alerts the pilot or causes the aircraft to deviate from its expected stabilised approach will often prompt a go around. They have TOGA levers on the throttles which will automatically set go around thrust, they then come back and try again. Company policy at all airlines means nobody will be questioned on their decision to go around, for safety reasons.

Being a passenger on a plane that pulls up while being only a few feet from touching down is unnerving, to say the least. An air traffic controller error made that happen while wife and I were coming in to Houston in May of 2002. Pilot said the controller told him another plane was on the runway she had told him to land on. When he got on the plane's PA, you could clearly tell he was mightily pissed off at her. The loop around maneuver consumed the 20 minutes we had been given to change to another plane for the rest of our trip, but luckily, at the last second, we ran up to the gate and made the flight! Whew! In retrospect, running through the terminal sure beat being splattered on the runway in a twisted tangle of bodies, metal, and exploding flames.
Many years ago l was waiting at Toulouse airport for a flight, all the time I was there Concorde was doing go around testing………A sight to remember, fantastic

When I was a very small child we were holidaying in Minehead in the English West Country. We were enjoying the Easter sunshine when we heard a tremendous aircraft noise. We looked up over the Bristol Channel and to our surprise we saw Concorde climbing. The white delta wing shape was very striking against the clear blue Spring sky. Apparently, Concorde 002, as it was designated was having flight tests from Filton Airfield, near Bristol. It occurred on the 9th April 1969, and I will never forget the sight of the beautiful, elegant delta winged aircraft against a cerulean blue sky. That last bit might be a little over-romanticised😊.

@@rosedervis Yes, it was amazing and it’s impossible to overstate how beautiful it was. Of course we have a completely different way of life now. We no longer need to fly across the world for a financial meeting or to collaborate on a creative project. Communication is instantaneous now for those with the resources to use information technologies and most importantly we have to consider the effect of Aviation on the climate and environment, so Concorde is of another time. Despite this she will hold a special place in Aviation History and in the hearts of the British and the French. I’m feeling very nostalgic now because this thread has taken me back to that little girl who was filled with excitement, disbelief and awe at what she was seeing in that April sky; and then later in the year watching with incredulity and fascination the Moon landing…just amazing.

Any problems on landing approach or something on the runway and the crew hit the TOGA (Take Off Go Around) switch on the throttles. This tells the aircraft to level the wings, apply takeoff power and pull the nose up, which it promptly does. They then go around for another attempt. In this video the aircraft looks like it had come down the ILS path quite nice and straight so it didn’t look too windy, and they were almost down when they initiated the go around. So it could have been either a training exercise ( which has to be done by new crew) or something hadn’t cleared the runway quick enough, which happens. I used to work at Gatwick and it was always interesting to go over to a certain vantage point on the airport and watch some of the approaches on windy days, I’ve seen loads of go arounds caused by the bad weather. One quick amusing story, while waiting for one of our aircraft to come in one morning we could see it on approach coming in over the Horley end, as it came down it suddenly went into go around. From where we were we couldn’t see the runway so had no clue why it had happened. When it eventually arrived on the gate I asked the captain what the problem was, at this point a very sheepish first officer walked off and the captain said “we were almost down and the F/O reached out ready to retard the throttles but accidentally hit the go around button in the end of the throttles and off we went”
I know nothing about planes, so take this with a grain of salt: it looked like at the last moment, the left wheel was higher than the right wheel. Look at 0:18 and you can see something happening
@@speedspeed121 Yes, you can see that and the wings continue to move up and down for a few hundred feet. Some nasty winds probably caused the go around.

Not really, this is normal condition. So save your hero BS, this is SOP for any pilot. Its called a go around or if it's for training, a touch and go. Its basic pilot shit, its not genius. Get a clue Tiger.

Looks like a good judgment call by the pilot for a go around given the wind gusts. Remember, no airplane ever crashed into the sky.

I was on a jet coming into Providence RI yrs ago & we did the same exact thing,we went all the way to Washington Dulles for a day. The whole east co was a mess about 1989.

It looks like a strong head wind kept the pilot from getting the plane on the runway with enough distance left to stop, good call on their part to abort the landing.
This happens EVERY Day across the world, it's called a GO AROUND, its BASIC PILOT SHIT! Get a clue.
A strong headwind will decrease the DECREASE the length of runway required for landing
Looked like a tail wind to me. There must have been a wind shift on final and started pushing them.

simple go around, plane was not stabilised, windshear or other situation caused this. been there done it.
One time during landing in a pretty good wind the left wheel hit hard & came up. Then the right wheel hit even harder. I felt the plane jerk to the right as in no longer headed down runway. Pilot gunned the engines, pulled up and retracted gear. Once level at maybe 1000', he announced we were going around to try again. 2nd attempt was textbook. Flight attendant mentioned it was wind sheer. Definitely gets your attention.

I remember looking out the window as my plane was maybe 50 feet from the runway, gliding peacefully into Omaha, Nebraska, in 1977. In a flash, the plane plummeted. I remember that concrete coming toward me FAST as the pilot gunned the engines and managed to land. I was really grateful he or she was ready for that wind blast.
it gets your attention! but one scary airline moment I had at OHare (years ago) was violent roll left at about 150 feet as we hit turbulence from previous take-off of a heavy jet. the pilot immediately rolled us from about 15 degrees left, past level, to 15 degrees right, then back to level. His/her reflexes and awareness saved the day and turned it into a routine flight. Eye-opener!

Lanzarote from Stansted last may, diverted to Lisbon 10 hours! Medical emergency. Short hop at 10.30 to a very windy Lanzarote, saw our hotel twice😂 then bumped down 2nd time. Was I happy!
I see at least 5 go arounds daily from my window at LaGuardia.

It's a touch n go. Was on a flight when we had to do that in order to miss a plane on the runway. Lived behind an Air Force base and would hear it all the time.
Touch and go is for TRAINING. Go around is for real.

I personally was on a plane landing in Puerto Vallarta MX and near touch down and went up to circle around again, scared the jebbies out of us..
Only happened to me once but was too sudden and quick return to normal flying to be scared. I took a cue from the other passengers to not react loudly and cause panic, my usual default position in such cases. I read up about aborted landings and go arounds after that incident. High cross winds was the cause.
It probably would have scared you a whole lot more if they'd continued with the landing 🤔

@@andys9864 agreed..it does say the airport in the blue font... However, Leeds is the highest airport in the UK and has tricky terrain on the approach, and Concorde almost crashed there... I used to fly in there from Belfast and it was often a white knuckle ride and the coffee used to end up on the cabin ceiling... @@davidf6326 Yes its worth the effort, coz walking back from Belfast is a bit tricky, and Leeds/Bradford airport is only a short walk to Murgatroyd's fish and chips... My next UK trip will be Chicago-Dublin-Leeds coz driving Heathrow/Leeds (and back), on the MI is excruciating... Never again. I can't leave home whilst her cat is poorly, so I have to wait until Vlad's novichok impregnated mouse arrives

I'm already terrified of flying, the older I get the worse it's become, I had that happen at the SF airport one time. It was a smaller plane with ten or so of us onboard, I even heard the pilot say "Crap!" As he lifted off back into the air. I did not enjoy that flight at all.
Several years ago, Northwest 757 from MSP to Baltimore-looking out the window, we were close to 100 ft off the ground- suddenly, the wing went up (what looked like 30 degrees). Pilot did a go-around - he announced “During a situation like we just encountered, the safest place to be is in the air”.

No, it's called a go-around. It's done when something is not quite correct for the landing, often an unstable approach.
He bounced and the trajectory changed. If I had been the pilot, I would have chosen to go around also unless I had 8000 feet of runway left. Looked like a smaller airport, so he probably didn't have the extra cushion in length, so TOGA was the right answer.
You can't believe you saw a "Go Around" it's a sign of a good pilot. He's putting the safety of the passengers over his pride.

That happened to us at Gatwick on and Easyjet flight, twice the pilot tried to land and twice went around landing at the third attempt. The excuse given was debris on the runway. I loved it, the wife wasn't so amused. 🙂

did that on a really foggy approach... glad we did because the runway lights (on the edge of the runway)... were straight below me as I looked out the window... meaning our landing gear (out on the wing) would have hit dirt instead of cement.... whew

I,ve been on 2 flights when this occurred - pilot is looking out for passengers, plane & himself. Kinda scary at first.

Been on one coming into Cardiff really windy wheels hit the floor wings went up and down people screaming and straight back up. Nothing for 10 mins then a posh voice said A little problem there nothing to worry about circle around and try again lol

An aborted landing happened to me once coming into Boston and it's the oddest feeling as the plane sort of takes off again how pushed back in my seat I became. And I'm not a fan of flying! That didn't help!!

This happens every day. The pilot is being safe and did not feel comfortable so he initiated a go around. No big deal!
