Sacramento Kings front office overruled by owner Vivek Ranadive in 2014 NBA Draft

This is the famous Grantland short that has been removed from their KZhead channel. Ranadive pressures his front office to take Nik Stauskas (Stauskas?!) over Elfrid Payton. A "Nik rocks!" chant concluded the ridiculous events as Ranadive pays former players Mullin and Richmond to be yes-men and affirm his grandiose assumptions.

4:00 "Either that or we're all wrong" Narrator: You were all wrong
Jesus Wenceslao I died when he said that lmao
Ron Howard voice "They were all wrong."
Mitch Richmond asks the only valid question, after seeing they have Vonleh ranked 3rd - how does he fit in the lineup when they already have Cousins... and they start talking about assists... wtf???
Narrator: But no one could predict what Portland could do with him. Enter opening night 2018.
Wouldn’t the narrator say “they”?
I died when the Kings GM called Philly to trade up for Embiid, "They said no" lmfaooo
Philly called back because they wanted to take on Stauskas. In the end they stole the 2019 Kings pick by taking Stauskas in a salary dump. Man, I wish we had one of these from the Billy King/Danny Ainge trade.
It did appear earlier in the video that they had had a prior discussion about an embiid trade and the 76ers were at least pretending to consider it. So then he called them to check, once embiid was confirmed to still be on the board at 3

By far, the worst draft room I've ever seen....
Well, atleast they showed us. Hope other teams will do this too
How many have you seen?
The problem is they discussed players entirely in how they fit into the current roster. When you never make the playoffs, forget about fit. Choose the best player
100% this. Pick the best player available, three years in a row, and you make the playoffs as they build chemistry together.

Hes delusional
Wym? They all wanted Stauskus. The GM wanted to trade up and take Embiid, but when Philly said no it seemed like everyone agreed to take Nik at 8

There even talk Vivek also put the kibosh on Kings drafting Luka Dončić. Kings GM at the time Vlade Divac being also of Serbian heritage like Luka's father and personally knowing the family wanted to sign him. Vivek had other ideas. Ultimately Divac was forced to fall on his sword.

Their scouting wasn't wrong. The decision isn't necessarily wrong. What is fundamentally wrong is vivek's involvement. He has zero basketball knowledge and can't think about anything other then Klay and Steph.
Sam B stauskas could have been a solid player, the kings are just toxic though
Vivek thinks he knows what he is doing bc he coached his daughters basketball games...middle school isn't the NBA Vivek!

BUBBLE GUTS Well, Vlade Divac did clean this mess up during his three years as Sacramento Kings VP of basketball ops/GM. Now with all these moves including trading DeMarcus Cousins and his drafting, let's see if Vlade is the Geoff Petrie during the Greatest Show on Court era and not the Petrie after Rick Adelman left.
BUBBLE GUTS sucks to be u hahaha

They knew in 2 years
bruh they knew in 1 year. they traded his ass after rookie season
Tapan Patel To Be fair, it was doomed from the start. Stauskas literally said he didn’t want to play there.
I think Ranadive clearly favored Stauskas, but it's not like overruled the front office. Seems like everyone in the room except maybe the analytics guys (who had Payton over Stauskas, but said "there was a huge debate over this") wanted Stauskas. (But those analytics guys also had Vonleh at #3, & he's turned out to be terrible, so it's not like they were exactly brilliant either...)
Payton himself proved to be a bad pick
Agreed. The FO was aligned with Stauskas before
This was basically the reason why Shareef Abdur-Rahim left Sacramento. He was essentially in charge with getting all of the information going into the 2014 draft. His guy was Payton, which would have filled a need for Sacramento as a defensive minded point guard who was pass first. They had just drafted McLemore in 2013, who was drafted for the exact same reasons why they ended up going for Stauskas. It was overlap. Stauskas is a one position player, as is McLemore. It was just dumb and a wasted pick.
i mean... Payton sucked too lol

I think that drafting shouldn't be done like this... Guys with strong voices and articulate skills will always win the debate... It should really be a decision of the GM and he should just get different opinions from the other guys he trusts...there are way too many people in the room.
Guys, it's not like Elfrid Payton would have been any different for this franchise. Neither choice would have been good.
Ian Benton Elfrid Payton been pretty good actually great defender still playing in the NBA averaging around 13 ppg. Would of been better pick than Stauskas at least
I know hindsight is 20/20 but like 7 better players selected after nik and payton.. Lavine,t.j warren, gary harris,Hood, jokic,Nurkich, clarkson,Saric etc..

It is kind of hard to tell your boss "no" if he is pressuring you to pick a certain player, because if you go against him and your pick is a bust that could be your job, it is a tough situation to be in, but I understand the frustration.
Fei Long But they don’t know they will get fired. That’s the point .
The thing is Vivek has zero basketball knowledge. He shouldn’t have a say in anything.
It really is lol and you can’t throw your GM under the bus two years after the fact either. But this video is the epitome of the Kings dysfunction. Why even record and post what goes on in your war room in the first place? 🤦♂️

Hindsight is such a beautiful thing. So the kings could have traded down for the 10th Pick plus 2-second-rounders. Could have ultimately been Zach Lavine and Jokic. Good thing time travel isn't real
The only draft that the timberwolves competently picked in fucking thibs ruins it and trades him, too. Small markets suck to be fans of.
Owners should keep their mouth shut, especially in basketball decision making talks, and talk only to extend or fire a GM.

Vivek should have said “1, 2 , 3, kick rocks!” Lol
The most embarrassing part of this is, in 2013, the Kings have to call in outside data analytics guys (who are amateurs btw) rather than ask their in-house ones.
Yeah but I think it's good that they were willing to listen to a new approach and let people in who weren't already part of their social or professional circle. That's rare.
I'm one of those guys. Analytics. I'll say this: What we do is very important, but we do NOT need to be the ones picking. In this draft, Payton wasn't the better analytics pick. Stauskas looked really good on paper. We base it on math. The good ones try to take fit and human element into account, but it's a mathematical formula. Lowest number wins. It's far from perfect, and that's why you have former players like Shareef heading the scouting. I can tell you what the numbers say, but I don't know a player's mindset. He does. The best departments(OKC, PHI, BOS) are an excellent blend of analytics and raw scouting.
owner is destroying the team
+Crazyjedi2 The Sacramento Kings were six feet under by the time Vivek Ranadive bought the team in 2013. If I were a Kings fan, I pin the blame on the Maloofs for teasing the fans about staying in Sactown or going to Anaheim, Virginia Bech or Seattle and also Geoff Petrie who did a poor job when the 'Greatest Show on Court' core was completely dismantled and not renewing Rick Adelman's contract.
This is what happens when you have a GM with no balls...
6:02 Pete D'Alessandro: Another team told me Stauskas for Boston. Speaking of that, Nik Stauskas is in the finals with the....BOSTON CELTICS!
Wow, this seems so quaint watching in 2019. Ridiculous how an NBA Draft room can be full of so many doofuses...it's like a prom party planning committee meeting...if the committee was just in 8th grade. Complete with tittering and rumors over who's gonna ask who to dance. Glad the Kings have turned it around.
Vivek learned his lessons the hard way, hurting the team more than helping. Since Vlade has been here, Vivek has left basketball decisions to more qualified folks.
It seems like every new owner does that.
Except Divac isn’t really qualified

I love that Vivek bought out the Kings so they could stay in Sacramento but he should not have input in basketball operations. Terrible draft choices and ideas. He's the one that wanted the Kings to play 4v5 on defense with one person on the other side of the court to cherry pick. I can see his innovative mind but please stay far away from operations

Not defending Vivek or anything, but would Payton over Stauskas have made any difference? I seriously doubt it. It's not like this front office was recommending Jokic or Capela over Nik.
Yeah, neither Stauskas nor Payton would've worked out. It's crazy how many hidden gems fell down in that draft though. Lavine, Bogdanovic, Nurkic, Joe Harris, Dinwiddie, Grant, Clarkson, etc... insanely stacked.
@@kiwishu1237 I didn't even realize that. It was a quality draft
Vivek doesn't get that people laugh at jokes that authority figures tell
God I hated this front office. Why is vivek making draft decisions? Pete thought that Parker was going #1 over Wiggins. Vivek thought that Wiggins is a shooting guard. Mullin is whispering sweet nothings into Vivek's ear. Disgusting.
1984chupacabra Wiggins played the 2 at Kansas...
Wiggins is a shooting guard tho
You stupid fuck
Wiggins and Butler are interchangeable at the 2 and 3. If you paid attention, it actually had Wiggins listed as a shooting guard when he was drafted.
When you get all your basketball info from NBA 2K
Imagine sitting there with no 1st round pick waiting and hoping that Nikola Jokic is still there at the 41st overall pick? I'd like to see that video from the Denver Nuggets front office perspective.
Stauskas was gone in a year, correct? This franchise also drafted Jimmer Fredette. I didn't see the GM being against the puck.
How did he overrule the scouts? I didn't see anyone disagree with the stauskis pick, they went around the table and they all wanted the same guy.
video quality like its the 80s
The Kings haven't made the Playoffs in 12 years and are still at least another 3 or 4 years of development before making them again. Dysfunction like this in the front office explains a lot of why that's the case.
If the Pete took Phillies 10 and Phillies two 2nd rounders they could've had Zach Lavine, Nikola Jokic and Jordan Clarkson. ugh
C'mon man. It's the Sacramento Kings. They wouldn't have ended up with any of those guys.

The only thing I give Vivek Ranadive credit for is ponying up the money to build the Golden 1 Center. Other than that, not so much.
@Fei Long But then Sacramento major Kevin Johnson created the Golden 1 Center arena plan. So, KJ deserves the credit.
6:25 seems like a bad deal; it's not like there was anyone good taken in the second round that year, right? Right?
Vivek just lives on his own planet, where none of his mistakes count and all of his past successes are still relevant. You'd think after years and years and years of bad decisions he's made as team owner would convince them that he's not good at running a front office, but men like him lack the humility and perspective to learn. Compare that to his staff, who correctly guess the first three picks while accurately projecting Embiid's ceiling, and smartly resolving to improve their perimeter defense with Payton. Meanwhile, Vivek's fetish for all things Warriors led him to demand a cheap knock-off.
Pro sports teams are just toys for their billionaire owners, and that's exemplified by franchises like the Knicks and the Kings. Winning is only a side benefit as long as the team is making money and appreciating in value.
@@nuraby_9228 except their dumb ideas interfere with that appreciation. The Spurs and Warriors would’ve probably be half as valuable as they are if ownership decided to take over the front office.

First time watching this video. As someone who has played ball his whole life it is shocking to me is how difficult they made a simple process be. Too many voices.
The thing is, there are podcasters and independant, accredited draft scouts whose life is dedicated the draft - at least 1 year ahead of when it takes place...they watch more footage and know more about the players than anyone at an nba front office would ever know...simply getting one of these guys in to make a legitimately i formed decision would be better than any choice front office could make.
