Probably, the mother duck pretended that she was leaving in order to motivate the ducklings to jump up the stairs faster.
My mom did that too when we refused to get in the car at the shopping mall growing up. She always came back though... eventually.

Fun fact, most animals can't count. She didn't leave because she knew her babies call and heard there was still one there. If the baby stopped calling, the mum would leave.

@Kat deejay Yes but it is scariest for the last duckling. It must have been so afraid, worried about the others leaving it, and anxious to catch up, but it fears that it will not succeed as it has failed so many times. All the ducklings were very brave tho, we should learn from them:)

Possibly, but likely not. You can put orphans of the same age as the mom's babies, and she'll take them in. Won't take older chicks, or younger chicks than the ones she has, so I doubt it's a love of babies.

I used to raise ducks. They are the most badass beings on planet earth.
I'm glad no one went to help them. These are all learning experiences that enable them to survive. It was definitely a nice feeling to see them all make it though.

No, they can't count. They just listen to the chirping. If they can't hear it they move on.

To keep a track of the babies they either rely on sight, or the mother duck let's out voice commands and the babies reply with their own sound. The baby can easily get seperated because if the mother duck doesn't hear anymore reply sounds or can't see a baby, she'll just carry on.
