The German sawback bayonet was the subject of intense propaganda and fear for both sides in World War I. Entente Press vilified Germany for its "barbaric" design (while ignoring similar weapons in its own armies) and German soldiers deliberately lost them after hearing what might happen if they were captured with them.

Battlefield one has to be in the top 3 best battlefield games of all time
It's the best battlefield according to reddit
BF 1, 3, 4, and Bad Company 2. Best in the series for me.
@@ziadx yeah, that one got a bunch of peoples britches in a twist
BFV was good, but the only thing I don't like is the inclusion of female soldiers as characters for each country. While there were women in combat positions in WW2, it wasn't very common.
@@SturmtruppKriegGaming1916 for me its the unrealistic camos and attachments and not to mention how no matter the side your on you get access to all guns 😑

Bayonetting an enemy can be fun in BF1, but when the enemy bayonets you out of nowhere in the thick fog that's the spooky
More like the bullshit
Osowiec, then and again Attack of the dead hundred men Facing the led once again Hundred men Charge again Die again
This implies that you can actually hit a bayonet, instead of being lasered down by 17 men the moment you go for it
Bayonet Chargers are cool and all right up until you have to fucking turn. then your enemy just shoots in the back of the head cuz you can't turn around quick enough😂
@@griffindr666 that's true on so many levels
Not even that one dude running away could escape the bayonet
he just died tired
@@Flakfire fr
Your character runs faster than normal while bayonet charging, that's why you sometimes see people randomly bayonet charging for no reason, that and because the scream is hilarious

The M1897: “Hold my buckshot.”
This is all a gamr of "that is unnecessary suffering": center makes funny blade, gets called by allies, us make funny boomstick, gets called by center, center makes funny gas, gets called by allies . . .
the cenrral powers already did poisonous gases before the US entered the war
In a war with flamethrowers, I don't think that sawback blades should come up.
Russia also used weird bayonets like triangle shaped ones which were banned as they would make healing or any recovery more difficult due to the angle
Mosin bayonets are cruciform. A cruciform or triangular wound can be stitched up, if you get hit in the leg or such however, if it goes in deep you are going to die, so it’s no worse than anything else.
There trifix@@Dominic1962
@@Dominic1962I heard it was a myth too
Still got mine from my Grandad
The real reason this reputation exists is because the sawbacks were thought to be used by saboteurs. German saboteurs would use them to saw off the wooden posts that held up the barbed wire. The other side wouldn't use such bayonets because the the Germans used a corkscrew to twist in their wire posts, so instead they just unscrewed them
FUCK YEAH NEW BF1 VIDEO
Wow every actually agreed on this one even the soldiers themselves losing their bayonets.
What surprised me was that German Soldiers would even file the sawteeth off of the Bayonet. Like the soldiers themselves thought the sawteeth were a bit too overkill.
The soldiers probably just didn't want to get executed if they were ever captured in battle
@@n8zog584The sawback was issued to higher ranks as well as engineers, so they were seen as distinguished. German dress bayonets from that time and earlier are often sawbacks. The milling off of the teeth was done at the factory, typically.
Allies: complaining about german bayonets Also allies: the frenchies had needle bayonets the wounds from which are more difficult to heal than ordinary bayonet stabing wounds and also soldiers modified them to cause additional damage when the bayonet is removed from the victim's body. And also russians, who have bayonets with three and four edges, whose wounds are also more difficult to stich and heal.
In the book all quite on the western front they talk about how the cadets are told to lose there serrated bayonet if they want to live and if they don’t the old soldiers would take away by force
I think they told the fresh ones that every man caught with one by the enemy would have his eyes gouged out and filled with sawdust.
THANKS for making battlefield 1 videos in 2024
can't stop, won't stop
* Smirks, hold my beer * Grabs shotgun. Now what about a bayonet?
The teeth werent nearly as bad as the ripping guts out myth and wouldnt be too noticeable
Not only that, both the French and the British used saw backed bayonets at the time.

Unnecessary suffering? Sounds familiar
Bf1 is a masterpiece 🙌
It's one of the best and most fun games until some prick in a plane keeps bombing you.
It's one of the best and most fun games until some prick in a plane keeps bombing you.
Gas attacks: ✓ Zeppelin raids: ✓ Submachine guns: ✓ Shotguns and oversized bread knives: "We aim for you first."
Its fun in battlefield 1 because the sentence for existing is death regardless of if you have a pp gun or a flamethrower
That bayonet charge at the beginning was horrifying
I was wondering why the hell my bayonet had ridges on the back of it
Yes, Erich Maria Remarque, a German veteran of WWI, even included this in his book “All Quiet on the Western Front.” Very interesting
Germany: Shotguns are cruel and barbaric weapons! Also Germany: *used serrated bayonets*
...did you watch the video?
It's not really affecting anything tho. It's like the least brutal thing about ww1 ever
i hate the word barbaric in warfare, they legit monetized warfare to a point where it can seem ok to look at. "tactical airstrike" like boy, ur just blowing someone up, why you gotta use these new words to make it sound ok. Melee weapons are "barbaric" when infact they are the most reliable weapons that prevent freandly fire/ killing of innocent people (due to misfires and collatorel damage) yet they would rather get rid of them because they are the only weapon in combat that get close and personal to the man people kill. god forbid you look at the man u kill close up, as long as its from far away its considered "civil". and to those who say well, it hurts less to be shot, ur dying anyway, the enemy will always use the most easiest method to kill u, in this case it would be a melee weapon.
I see your point but the sawblade bayonet was considered unnecessarily cruel because normal bayonets without sawblades already existed. The sawblade didn’t reduce costs or provide any benefit to the Germans and their war efforts; all it did was cause more horrific and agonising bayonet wounds. A normal bayonet wound would already take a man out of action so the added serrated blade didn’t add anything to the weapon’s effectiveness
You’re missing the point dude. Bayonets have been a thing for hundreds of years. Adding teeth to one is unnecessary. And it causes way way way more damage than needed. Hence why it was called barbaric.
@@operationchariot1935your missing the point, sawblade bayonets were more than a weapon, they were also a tool. So there actually was a benefit to having it be serrated. And if you want to talk about unnecessary suffering look at the Americans shotgun which essentially just sprayed the enemy with little balls of steel.

Me: wondering how tf these dudes are running so fast with all that gear.
“Ok, if you can have your shotguns, I know I can damn well have my serrated knife*
In All Quiet on the Western Front Remarque wrote, if I remember correct, that the veterans of the front would stop the new recruits and tell them to lose the saw backed bayonets. That soldier caught by the enemy were found with their noses cut off and mouth and nose wound stuffed with saw dust until they suffocated to death.
Soldiers caught with the sawback bayonet by the enemy***
Wait which guns can you put it on?
Almost in the majority of guns
My grandparents have one of those, and the serrated part is all filed down
British had shotguns - Germans had spiky knives.
American had shot guns. Not sure for the british
They got rid of them because they got stuck while bayoneting someone not because it was “so inhumane even they didn’t want to use them”.
Meanwhile Germans crying about a shotgun
A weapon that kills is a good weapon. A weapon that brings fear before death is a better weapon.
Why use a bayonet when a shovel is way better
In game you sprint far faster when bayonet charging, the one soldier the player chases is sprinting normally and even the bayonet player catches up in mere moments. But yeah, a shovel would have better to use in melee combat irl, provided the soldier didn't get shot or blown up while closing the distance.
Meanwhile the Americans with the trench shotgun
To the ones who don't know, soldiers who had the sawblade if they got caught using it,the enemy would took their nose and peeled their eyes off,we could see the same situation in the book "All quiet on the Western front",the writter of the book is actually a ww1 veteran, there is a scene when the main character advised a rookie to throw the sawblades away, just to make sure the rookie won't end in that unfortunate fate
The Americans don’t get to complain when they start using shotguns
Germans: Anyone found with even shotgun shells will be executed. Americans: Anyone found with even a fucking knife will be executed. Germans: Wait what?
Why: the saw teeth would not only punch through but would accumulate to the flesh of the victim, making up for some really big pain as it trapped it self with the flesh and stabbed the victim as some agressive movement of the bayonet would cause even more pain and suffering plus death would be slower I think. Only if they pull the bayonet out. Which is gonna be crunchy.
It took me so long to get the parts for it in game.
So where does the flame thrower and artillery fall in line with unnecessary suffering
one of the best games i ever played
The Martini Henry has one too.
So the Sawtooth Knife melee weapon isn't actually a real weapon, it's not based off of any particular blade that was used during the war, but is vaguely similar to a German bayonet from the period (Very vaguely I might add lol). The bayonets we see mounted to weapons in the game actually come in three variants: Generic Spike Bayonet US M1903 Bayonet German KS98 Bayonet (Notably used by the Schutztruppe in Africa, but did see usage in Europe as well). I wish that each weapon had the correct corresponding bayonet model but it is what it is. Those 3 are the only types we ever being mounted on all the various weapons in the game. I actually made a mod that adds the appropriate German SG98 and British P07 Bayonets as melee weapons tho which is neat :P
Meanwhile americans: shotguns
It was said the same when they complained about the Americans who used Shotguns during trench raids.
Difference is a trench shotty is gonna rip limbs off or just put a massive hole in your chest. Either way you’re dead pretty much in one shot. How you gonna complain about brutality when it’s the same as mowing down hundreds of dudes with an MG that’s gonna leave giant holes and tear off limbs?
I have one that has had the teeth ground off nice piece of history
unnecessary? I call that passive damage!
1917 German Army: Ok, Ok we've withdrawn the sawback bayonet it's far too barbaric US Army: that's better, now let me just rack up my Boomstick. German Army: Wait .... wut
Yeah, the germans also said that the americans using shotguns was a war crime 🤷

HECK YEAH Flakfires back onto "did you know battlefield one!" since you are back, could you talk about the forgotten bf1 weapon the Ararebo? Or the Tinian tank skin in bf5 (the only tank skin in game hailing from the US Navy, used by seabees and the like)? Ooooh or you could do one about the US's L30 patrol airships! That would be sick. OOOOHHHHH could you do one about the significance of the numbers 4 and 9 (meaning death and Suffering, like the number 13 in english) on the bf5 Japanese vehicle skins!!!!!! Ive always wanted to see you make videos about these.... hmm okay maybe ill see if your patreon or whatever had a "video suggestions" box before this comment becomes a mile long.

Just like that horrid American shot gun.
Battlefield 1 is not historically accurate though. The guns and the helmets are not correct. Especially for the support class getting a whole as helmet 😂
