This is the ORA Funky Cat!
It’s an all-new electric car from China, and Mat’s about to find out if it has what it takes to rival established brands such as MINI & VW in the small electric car category!
Upon first glance, you may be forgiven for thinking the car looks recognisable. For example, look at it from the rear and it looks similar to a Fiat 500, while from the front it looks pretty similar to the MINI Electric! Clearly the designers must have been influenced by the cars they’re going up against, but that’s not exactly a bad thing!
The inside is pretty well laid out as well. There are good quality materials across the dash and on the doors, and there are two decently sized screens to house the infotainment system and digital dials. They may not be the most intuitive systems, but they work well enough for the size of car.
One key selling point is the tech that comes inclusive! There’s only one trim level available for this car, so that means that things such as electronically controlled seats and 360 parking cameras come as standard.
The car is powered by a 48kWh battery pack along with a single electric motor. This can produce 171hp while it’s good for a claimed range of 193 miles. That’s well up on a MINI Electric, but a fair bit lower than the likes of a VW ID.3.
The ORA Funky Cat costs from £32,000. But does it offer enough to tempt you away from the more established competition? You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

You also have to remember that this car also has a crazy high Euro NCAP rating. Its the 11th overall safest vehicle they've tested with only offerings from Tesla, Mercedes, Smart, Lexus and Wey scoring any higher. I'd say that's an arguably more impressive achievement from such a new manufacturer.
This car is more like a downgraded Toyota Pod or something.
Ora isn't new. Theyre a subsidiary of Great Wall Motors. They are impressively new to electric cars though.

What I really liked when I did sit down in one of these was the view out of the windscreen. You have these arches left and right, which looks great!
The rear seat room is better than on some midsized sedans. Good perceived quality and designs make this a great unique little thing.

I think it looks great both inside and out. They did imitation right, they took from the best. And having all those iconic design features in it means every time the owner walks up to it from a different angle there will be something else to admire about it. Whatever else may happen you'll never get bored of it's design.
Surprisingly it looks pretty nice. Has a lot of elements from other cars but it looks clean.

Hey Mat, there are a few non-British guys watching your amazing reviews. It would be nice to see the characteristics of a car in metric units as well (somewhere in the corner of the screen with a small font will work as well). I tried to get used to imperial units, but I just can't, so I'm using google to convert all the time which is disturbing me from watching the video :)

Saw the ORA range at the Paris motor show a few weeks back. A funny little car with bits of design from every European manufacturer. There was another manufacturer there called BYD. They have some stunners in the range.

@@woody2woodster There is a KZhead video of a UK owned MG5 which has been used for business trips. It had covered 40k miles in 11 months. No problems had become evident so far, and the MG was still performing as intended. The battery was holding up surprisingly well, still showing 96% SOH (state of health). I fail to see how you are able to make valid comments on something you have zero experience of......

I own a Mini Cooper SE and our 48.5kg dog fits in the boot because of Minis absolute genious idea of 2 point back seats. If you need more straight up cargo space, you can put the seats in a upper position with the metal holders.
The last thing I care about is what type of USB connection is in the car. If anything, I prefer the old ones because I've already got heaps of those cables.
If I was in the market, the MG4 would be my current go to.

In 10 years the batteries of these cars will have died and nobody will use these early EVs any more, because battery tech will be lightyears ahead and nobody will be able to repair a 10 year old chinese niche car.

The parking brake coming on automatically has been a thing on automatic trucks for a while like Scania/Volvo/DAF, it's a great to have, just press down on the brake hard and it clicks on and then press the accelerator and you set off.

Amazing value for that car.. definitely fully loaded and one to watch from a technical point of view and a very good technical knowledge and understanding of the word wide market.

I've been waiting for this car review for ages, as I loved it when it was first shown in motor shows. Now, is it good enough to make us move to the UK to get one (as I now live in the US)? Maybe.
This is a weird one. From the outside it looks like one of those no-name concept electric cars made by small companies that mix and match parts from random older cars. But seeing all those tech features and really lovely interior, it's like a completely different car on the inside - definitely a funky design!

I just test drove one of these. It definitely nice and seems quality inside and I should know as I have driven Jaguars and Mercedes with full leather interiors. The quality of the full 360 degree cameras is amazing and the resolution of the screens is very crisp. The screens update very fast and this supports the word on the street that the Chinese insist on recent chipsets inside the cars they buy. They are very latest tech in China which is why this is only the second full electric car available in the UK that has face recognition in it. The look of the dashboard is nicer than the MG4 and feels better thought out and not thrown together. If you want a look at one go online and arrange a viewing or a test drive. My local Ora dealer is part of a Mercedes dealer. It does not look out of place next to Mercedes and Smart cars.
This car definitely has personality… it grew on me throughout the video! The accents segment was tres bien ❤

This car is really not bad at all. It’s cute, roomy interior, decently equipped, decent quality, has great warranty and is reasonably priced. Nothing really awful about it (such as VW’s infotainment system for instance). Boot is a bit small maybe but it is ok.
But put it next to the MG4 at a starting price of £6k less Eric, and it loses some of it's shine.......

Was curious about this car. I live in sweden where I think it was recently released. Here it’s called the ORA 300 Pro for some reason. I found some Swedish reviews too and realized I’d already seen yours review but I have to watch yours again because you do it fun and consistent and I trust you more. I guess spec wise they’re identical apart from left hand drive here.

Haval and GWM has been in South Africa for a few years now, they are very reliable and safe cars. They are on the top 10 most sold new cars in SA every month. We only have the hybrid Havals for now, cant wait for the fully electric cars to arrive

I like the Ora Funky Cat and see loads of them here in China, but they are a lot cheaper here. They start at £22.000 which is a better price for this car.
I’m Singaporean after 6 months living with it!! I dare give this Ora 8.5/10 and impatiently waiting for their Ora Lighthing hope to get it mid 2023 if I’m lucky ie.
The material that is used in this car simply neat and awesome
To have actually test driven it in China and Thailand, I very confident to say that it's a great in town and highway drive ( 110km/h ~) feels really good. Car felt planted . The Interior feels really premium but the visibility was by far my favorite, super easy to drive and feel the corners of the car. Don't know what the euro price will be exactly but in Thai baht converted they offered prices around 25k€.
The crash test for this model was good. Nice car.

To be honest I was excited when I heard the Ora was being released in the UK because they promised it to be the most affordable EV…then last year their marketing was leaning towards MG pricing at the cheaper end. Now they’ve released it, it’s expensive. A missed opportunity to dominate the market. Oh well, will hold onto my cash till a mini suv ev is released for 22k
