She is literally the core of history that no one teaches or talks about in todays society. Shes worth more than coal or gold.
Her story needs to be in the Library of Congress, I'm not kidding, someone from Story Corps needs to contact her.
Amen. I know ppl like this. My gram is like this. She's 96 and just got herself a new John Deere tractor so she can mow the giant lawn.

At the time of this interview, this 87 year old lady was still driving a semi truck. I don't think many people have caught she's a truck driver along with supporting rental properties and her own farm. She's put generations of her family through school while living in one of the most impoverished areas of the US. She's a perfect example of not lying down and letting the world beat you down.
I'm ashamed of myself. She does more by 9am than I get done in a week! Starting tomorrow, I'll be drinking a cup of gelatin and singing amazing Grace
My grandmother was from Appalachian. 11 kids 5 orphans sold moonshine , gardens, chickens to take care of her family. She's my hero!
She's amazing! I love how she scoffed when Mark asked if she wore glasses LOL
I'm ust wondering: What makes you not "think many people have caught..." what you were able to catch, from watching the exact same interview, of this good natured, industrious Christian woman?
Amen
This deserves way more views. This woman IS the example of how to live a long, satisfying life.
“I live it just like I want to. If you don’t, you’ve wasted the whole thing.” Wow, I was not expecting her to play the guitar and sing so fast and loud! Awesome lady.
Ms. Ruby has helped so so so many people, she’s kept a many of kids from starving to death. I have known Ms.Ruby for quite a while and I swear she has wings because she is a angel !!!
I would love to meet her ❤️
I believe you, she is a treat to listen to, I love her stories like I did my granny's.
Please how can we meet this beautiful soul🙏🏻🙏🏻

She's one of my favorites. I just love her beautiful spirit.
she's stoic. She doesn't waste time in the affairs of others. She lives her life for herself. Infinite respect.
She seems healthy, active, and bright. Hope to be in as good condition at 87 as she.
That's my kind of folks right there, it is my people here in The WNC Mtns my Grandmother's are the same way, I love this series I can relate so much to alot of em.

Ruby is amazing and an inspiration. Just love her.

Wow
I love Ruby! Her mind is sharp, she’s strong and healthy, proof that raising and growing your own food and breathing mountain air is the best medicine. God bless her and her family. ❤

As someone who lives in the Appalachian area, I can say that 90% of our old Appalachian women are like this. They really are a treasure and I don't think many people appreciate them.
And the young girls are all tattooed and drugged up by 15. Let's see what the future holds.
I appreciate them. This is so wonderful to see this video. These old women are a national treasure. Good someone is saving their knowledge & stories.
She's great! I love her optimism and her no-nonsense attitude! Rather than complain about the struggles of life, she's looking at the blessings and thanking and praising God for them.
I APPRECIATE HER. STRONG. RESILIENT. INCREDIBLE!! KNOWS WHAT IS VALUABLE.
That’s a shame they aren’t appreciated, that’s sad! Appalachian history and culture are so original and extreme in some ways. I’m from Australia and love learning about anything Appalachian!
She made my whole day! People judge this community so harshly, but every time I watch the old folks talk…I realized I missed out on so much. Bless her sweet soul. I wish her continued good health & prosperity!❤
Only liberals judge these people and truth is when the shite hits the fan soon those people will be begging for these people to help them.
People judge what they don’t know
Me too. She is a wonderful lady..🌻
I rarely watch interviews all the way through. However this gem of a woman had me hooked the moment she started talking. So much grace, knowledge, wisdom, and heart. She definitely embodies her name ❤

This woman is the definition of a badass. Forget all the celebrities talking nonsense without experiencing shit. This lady right here is an example of strength and perseverance for every young girl (and boy) out there.
Right? I 100% agree, she is confident without knowing there was anything else to be but confident.

You really have to admire a woman so single minded as Ruby, there is nothing shallow or superficial about her ...God bless her with a long life to live to be that 104 years as her ancestors lived.
I’m from a neighboring county and my own grandmother had this same spirit and lived to be 97! She had the same values and lived “off the land” that she was born and raised. I attribute much of my common sense, values and knowledge to her. I see so much of my love for eastern Kentucky in this interview! She’s a jewel and obviously a blessing to many!
Her singing got to my soul. I felt her pure joy 😭🥰
I’ve re-watched that part maybe 20-30 times? It’s so good, so many feels.
She is a national treasure, glad they filmed her so this can be preserved.
I can't stop smiling!
I'm singin with you Ruby!
Try praising God every night like that!
That is so true we all want her as a Mamaw
A treasure! Great set of teeth too!
"Just an old time woman." "Limber as a dish rag." This gal's amazing; a pure gem and a true inspiration.
Definitely refreshing to see this lovely woman talk
I could listen to her for hours. What a great attitude and she did a great job on her singing guitar playing 😮
She is such a bright spot.
What an inspiration. Ruby should right a book and call it "Life of an Appalachian woman" I would buy it in a heartbeat.
@@mariagonzalez4136 She could make a pile of money on doing podcasts.
From the coal mines of Kentucky, through the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee, down through the Cumberland Plateau, and delta of Memphis and Mississippi. This amazing woman represents how rural southerners have lived and spoken in these hills, hollers, and bottoms for hundreds of years.
To say Ruby is a treasure is not an overstatement. She has more good sense and love of life than most people. I admire her straight forward, confidant nature, her self sufficiency and simple joy in life.

Anyone that criticizes mountain folk should take this lady as an example. She is hard working, and its graced her with amazing longevity.
I am absolutely fascinated with appalachian life and culture.
I loved growing up in the Appalachian mountains. It's a hard life, but it'll keep you strong and healthy. The community bonds run very deep and they stay strong. I could go back there today and probably everyone would remember me from 30 years ago, and they'd remember the names of every one of my babies. I still remember all of them, too. It's a life that's built on strong bonds and kinsmanship. If your neighbor needed food, you gave it. If they needed fire wood or coal, you went around collecting it for them, especially if they were elderly bc those are our living ancestors. Everything we will build in our lives will be built upon their sacrifices for us, so they will always get our respect and consideration first. It's a very different value system than most people have today.

My grandma is her age, still lives on the farm by herself. She does everything for herself and the doctors say she’ll make it to 100. It goes to show what keeping busy does for your longevity and health. Our running joke is she’s too mean to die, but we all know that it’s her keeping busy that has kept her going the way she has.
My grandfather always told me, he had seen tons of guys who didn't pick up a hobby or have anything to do in retirement. Those who didn't would die in 6 months or a few years. He said you HAVE TO have something to do, or you'll die young.
I come from a family of film makers and this is just about the most beautiful documentary I have ever seen. Ruby must have been a neck-snapping stunner in her day. Still absolutely gorgeous. The interview pulled on all of my heart strings in the best way. Thank you!

The way she rolled out that southern gospel was amazing!! 🙏🙏 Most enjoyable interview, Mark 💞
It’s sad to think of all of the amazing things lost from this generation because traditions are either dying, or just not passed down because people just don’t find the same things important anymore. Honor, integrity, & accountability is a daily practice for them. Hard times make strong people. Thank you for sharing this amazing woman’s stories and experiences with us.
Being born and raised in Harlan County Kentucky I can tell you Miss Ruby is the norm of the type of older women here. I’m thankful to you for showing the “real” Appalachia! We’re definitely not all dumb backwoods inbreds like a lot of Hollywood likes to make us out to be. This is the norm here…not the usual stereotype. We may talk differently and live more simple lives, but we are a strong , god fearing, family oriented people. I’m proud to be from Appalachia ❤️
Years ago I fell in love with a girl from Kentucky whose grandfather was a WW2 hero, her whole family were smart and educated ( some educators). People look down on them because of the accent , it’s dumb. They were smart , sweet people. Didn’t work out between us , but she opened my eyes.
I grew up in Whitetop, VA but moved to North Carolina at 18…….I am extremely proud of where I’m from, I speak a very country accent and I get made fun of all the time and I just laugh it off……ppl just don’t understand what’s it’s like to grew up where there were farms and my Mom raised gardens that were so big, she canned and we had good ole’ sausage and we could make the best gravy around with it, green beans (pink tip, if anyone has heard of them, but they make the best beans), jellies and jams and pumpkin pies with homemade pie crust, my granny and my Mom were both terrific cooks…….we called biscuits “catheads”……I have no idea how that came about but I’ve heard it all of my life. My granny taught my Mom so much and Mom done her best to teach it to my sisters and I, I remember granny and Mom saying things like “if you don’t listen you will feel” “a stitch in time saves nine”……haha I remember my granny called kids that weren’t minding hulick (probably way off on the spelling lol) she also said Hethrin (probably spelled wrong too lol…..I didn’t say I could spell em just that I heard them growing up) so many words I heard my granny say, granny didn’t care to whip ya butt when you were bad and my parents done the same and I appreciate every whipping I got and probably needed more lol…….kids nowadays need a good butt whipping every once in a while and they wouldn’t be spoiled brats lol……oh I’m off on a tangent lol, just wanted to say I love this little Ruby, she’s a blessing✝️🎚️😇

As a rural Kentuckian, I'm happy to see people being respectful and saying sweet things about this woman. Appalachia & the South are often mocked, stereotyped and ridiculed by people around the world so it's wholesome to see so many different people sharing their kind words.
Agree 100%. I grew up in Appalachia and moved to cities after. I learned quickly that people mock, look down upon, and make fun of Applachian people. I'm glad this channel brings to light that some of these people are living happier, more wholesome lives than those who degrade them. This makes my soul happy!
I hear that but often people attack what they don't understand or what they fear.Im fortunate that my parents taught me many moons ago to respect people that deserve respect, this woman has achieved more with her life than 5 generations of other families have and that is truly something to revere

What an absolute treasure she is! There’s something to be said for hard work, self-sufficiency and no excuses.
She's leaving her property to her kids (all 5 generations, etc.) but she's going to make sure that they, "can't sell it or mortgage it" SMART woman! This is generational wealth! Also, I love that she took her teeth out to sing!
Not smart, they will be stuck with it paying taxes whether they can afford it or not.

@@bygraceonly182 Believe me, FIVE generations of her decendants can figure out how to pay the taxes (with no mortgage)! That's a true legacy! Imagine always having the family property in the family!
She has set up rentals on that property. That's passive income and definitely true generational wealth. That woman is a force of nature.
It's incredibly smart. The taxes there are next to nothing and you have a portion of the rent pay those. Smart people make their money work for them.

Add that will of hers n attitude n faith n throw in some good genes n most could probably have a similar life. Shes done good! Amazing woman! Her n my parents generation of depression era babies were raised different, but shes right, we probably all will have to go back to this n folks need to be talking to the old folks n "get to learnin"! Im still trying the jello though, lol, cant hurt.
My mom used to feed us a lot of jello when I was a kid.
Hahaha!!! I thought the same!!! 😂😂
I’m from this area and with a masters in nursing I still raise my on my food. I do what my parents taught us we were very poor too. Ms. Ruby is a queen. Thank you for appreciating our small community and way of life.
I understand why you interview a lot of the hard cases in the world but it was really nice to see somebody that didn’t get molested or wasn’t on drugs and made the best out of life and had a good outlook on life. Thank you for doing this interview!
Amen!
I agree with the sentiment, but just a reminder not to assume the details of her life just because she didn't choose to share them. I certainly hope her life was a pleasant as she recounted.
@@alireid5874 She never tried to say that her life did not have problems, she just chose to face them head on and have a good attitude about it. She had problems just like everyone does, and she shared them, she just "took it on" and conquered them. She answered all his questions in an intelligent straight forward manner. Having a pleasant life does not mean it lacks problems, you just move through them and that is what she has done. God bless her for it! She sets a great example for everyone.
@@deepsouth3319 many people of the older generation didn't share about the abuse or trauma that they experienced, because they were trained not to. That doesn't mean that it didn't happen, though I'm not projecting that on her. I am saying that when people celebrate people who only say positive things, it discourages people from speaking their truth, and discussing the difficult things that they experienced.
@@alireid5874 This particular KZhead site is called "Soft White Underbelly" it is "Ripe" with all kinds of horror stories and some from older people. So what you are stating is not true, yet, you chose a positive story like this to make your cynical statements. To me, that says a lot about you. It would do you good to watch this interview again and try applying some of her philosophy to your own life.
Ruby reminds me of my grandma. My grandma was an Oakie, married my grandpa at the age of 15 and popped out 11 kids. She passed away in the early 2000's at the age of 86. Loved listening to her!
When she says there are so many children now. They all know me but I don’t know them but they are so sweet. She is a good person!!!! Born and raised in southern WV she reminds me of my grannies. They were strong and didn’t take much crap! Much love to her and the elders of Appalachia
I loved this interview and this woman ❤️. It was the BEST one yet . Do more positive interviews !
I totally agree
She's an amazing woman..87?..Damn..she is awesome...great work ethic..self reliant...that's one great American.
Yes, I totally agree. The negative airtime given to the drug addiction and socially unacceptable employment is a part the culture indeed, but not predominant for the representation of the Appalachian population.
@@delorestaylor8114 Yes , I agree 100 % ! Not all of Appalachia is drug addicted . I don’t know why this man seems to want to focus on only the bad in Appalachia . It puts a bad taste in my mouth . I was really put off by him trying to interview the Whittaker’s ! Those people are mentally handicapped and it was like he was putting them out there to be made fun of or something . It was awful and he should remove that video !
Yes! I was between tears of joy and my jaw dropping when she played the guitar. This women was so so inspiring. Yes more interviews like this. I stopped watching for a long time since so many of the interviews each time were drug stories. I understand that but there must be more people like this women in the mountains there too
She is living proof that you’re only as old as you feel❤️ Girlfriend can run circles around young people and still have energy.
That's what happens when you only eat meat and vegetables you raise your whole life. And work in the dirt and sun.
@@randyreynolds6508 : What about the salt, sugar, and lard she said she eats.
@@anonymousjohnson976 Nowhere near as dangerous as the chemical preservatives in store bought food. One serving of artificial sweetener will do more damage than a serving of that sugar, lard and salt...combined. Look how we've realized that butter is healthier than margarine in the last decade or so. Sugar isn't as bad as "high fructose corn syrup" either. Another reason her diet is healthier than the rest of us is that she probably has never gorged herself like a tick when sitting down to a meal. She's probably had many days of involuntary fasting in her life as well.
I remember my great grandmother when I was a little girl. We would go see her and pick a lot of vegetables from her garden. She was in her 80's and as we were slowly going down a row picking whatever, you could look towards where she was picking corn and just see the stalks moving quickly down the whole row...lol...she didn't have indoor plumbing until 1982 either...you had to bribe the cow with peaches to get to the outhouse unmolested!
This precious lady is priceless. If more of the world was like her it would be a better place. I bet she is an awesome cook too!! Love you Miss Ruby. Hope you're doing well and living life to the fullest 💘
A show about Ruby is what this country needs!!! ❤
"I was baptised where my grandfather drowned" …excuse me, I've got a song to write
Right? Wow .. 😭🙏❤
🤔I think she said, "friend father drowned" you can still make a hit song about it though😜
Hahah my thoughts exactly
And that's a folk hit right there
yes..... that hit me too......did you write the song?
This woman is a diamond in the rough. She is absolutely fascinating. I am just in awe of her and her spirit. ❤️❤️❤️
Amen
She's no diamond in the rough. She has had 86 years to shine up her diamond to perfection. She shines brightly and has for decades.
I couldn't agree more with this comment as well as the other 2 top liked comments

Goosebumps, truly. Thank you so much for capturing this moment and sharing it. I can take inspiration from her plucky spirit.
Mrs. Ruby you are one in ten billion. I had an accident and I am paralyzed from the waist down. I have been feeling a little down lately. This was the video I needed to see right now. Your rendition of Amazing Grace swept me away and gave me some hope, In your interview you said that you hoped maybe one person would see this and it would make a difference in their lives. Well I see from the previous comments that you have had a HUGE impact on the world and I am one of those voices. I imagine you might be Order of the Evening Star. however, I agree that getting involved in building a strong family and community is so important. Thank you for sharing your story. Excellent interview Mark. I think she wanted to sit and talk with you a little while longer it was adorable.
1 of the finest women ive ever known. My granny and ruby was dear friend's for a long time. Always a sweet lady. Glad she gets to tell her tales
Amen,Amen,Amen,Amen, she is definitely a blessing to all. Thank you Jesus💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝
@Love One another Amen,Amen,Amen
She has a beautiful spirit.
She literally made my eyes water, I love her.
Tell me if I'm right, she was probably STUNNING in her youth. She's still beautiful now.
"I don't fool with nothin' that'll cause a regret". This woman is a gangster!
Love it....if I had lived like that about walking around it, I would be OK right now lol!
🤣🤣💀 priceless
God Bless you Ruby❤. I'm from your neck of the woods, left home for work..I miss home so much! It was a pleasure watching your interview, people don't understand our ways. If more people lived as we have,it would be a better place.
Omg!!!! I love Ruby!!! Wish we all lived/ thought,/ sang like that!!!! , Made me look at my own life and push on!! Thankyou Ruby! Thankyou Mark
This women doesn’t eat food poisoned by the “man” that’s how she’s in spectacular health if you ask me.
Ruby baker is someone to look up to. you, however are INSANE!
Didn’t she say she ate jello? Lol
Ur exactly right, north americas food supply is ruined unless u are very educated and disciplined on proper diet to make the right choices
How did this woman make it to 87 years old eating sugar, salt, and lard?
@Defenestrate : My family did the same in Tennessee. My father died at 58 from chain smoking cigarettes, the kind that you roll up. My mom died at 78. I don't remember any of my immediate family living past 78 years old.
This lady reminds me of my grandmother. She was born 1921. Shes passed now. She grew her food in gardens her whole life and until my grandpa passed they slaughtered cattle for meat and milked them for milk.. slaughtered hogs. They grew tabacco too. She was so old fashioned never wore pants unless she was working in the garden or with the animals. Went to church every Wednesday and Sunday. I use to love her stories and voice. Helped her break beans and can everything you can think of. She was in rural Tenneessee.. where I live now. She split her land between her 5 kids. Her name was Ruby too! This woman is amazing. I love this video so much! ❤God bless her. She's so sweet.❤
So was mine Sept 1921.
My Great-Grandma died in January 1995 at 100. She grew her own food, too. She still had smooth skin & clear blue eyes. They don't build them like this woman or my Grandma anymore. I so wish I could live like they did.
what a wonderful woman, and lady, she has so much grace! i loved this interview, i’m 51 and can’t walk, due to long covid plus other health issues, she puts a lot of folk to shame, inc me. she’s amazing. 😊
This is the best interview on KZhead. It gave me chills and fill our hearts! God Bless You, Ruby!
This is my family. Holly Hunter came and stayed with her to learn her ways. She used her personality to film the movie Harlan County War.
What a wonderful family!
You come from great stock if your are apart of her family. I want to move back to KY just to go see Mrs. Ruby!
Ruby's accent is EXACTLY like my mom's. When she said "I just love those little children," I felt like she was sitting here in this room with me. Mom was born in 1932 in rural Tennessee and passed away in February. I miss her so much and Ruby brought her right back to me 💔
Blessings to you, it’s so hard to loose your Mom! Remember she’s physically gone but her spirit is with you every minute of everyday! She’ll hear you ❤️
I'm sorry for your loss! She's still in your heart, always will be. You ain't gotta miss her, because you can visit with her anytime you want.
I’m sorry
amen and God bless
Mark thank you for this interview. I could listen to Ruby’s stories all day long. She has infinite wisdom for the world. It makes me proud to be from Kentucky and I want to go back for good. God bless you Ruby.
This was a awesome interview, God bless her . I didn’t want her to stop talking .
"I'm as limber as a dish rag". This woman is incredible.
I'm going to start eating jello!!!😃
Bless her heart ❤️
