Bird Rips Snake’s Eyes Out as it Tries to Escape
Brave bird attacks a snake twice its size whilst trying to stay away from the snake’s highly venomous fangs. Will the risk be worth it for the bird or not? Field guide Pieter van Wyk at @MalaMalaGameReservewas able to record the battle and shared it with LatestSightings.com. Send in your wildlife video here, and earn money: www.latestsightings.com/partn...
“It was a sunny day, and I was taking a group of tourists out on a morning drive when I spotted the commotion. It had not even been 10 seconds into our drive. We had barely left the vicinity of the camp.”
“At first, I thought it was a snake attacking a bird of some sort, but as I got closer, I realized that the bird was actually attacking the snake. The bushshrike, with its distinctive grey, yellow, and green plumage, was diving down and pecking at the boomslang, a venomous tree snake is known for its bright green color.”
“The snake was trying to escape, but the bushshrike was relentless. It would dive down and attack the snake, then fly back up to a nearby branch, only to repeat the process again.”
Grey-headed bushshrikes are ferocious birds that will eat just about anything they can get their beaks on. It is a known fact that they will kill snakes if given the opportunity.
“As I was observing this fascinating interaction, I knew well that the snake stood no chance. At this point, the bush shrike had already delivered fatal blows to the snake”
“We watched on for a while, and when the inevitable became clear, the guests requested we leave before the snake actually died as they could not stomach the sight. As we were leaving, I couldn’t help but think about what would happen to the snake.”
“Deep down, I knew that the snake would most likely not survive the attack. The bushshrike at this point had already blinded the snake and was continuously attacking the snake’s head.”
“Even though I didn’t stay to see the end of the encounter, I was still struck by the power and ferocity of the bushshrike. It is a reminder of the brutal realities of nature and the constant struggle for survival that takes place in the bush.”
Through these experiences, we can gain a deeper appreciation for the natural world and the delicate balance of life and death that exists in the bush. So the next time you are out in the wild, be mindful of the interactions taking place around you and take a moment to appreciate the incredible beauty of nature.

Great footage. My guess is that the shrike is not hunting the snake to eat, but is attacking the snake because it has had its nest robbed. The boomslang (tree snake) looks like it has just swallowed an egg or two. The shrike is called a spookvoel in Afrikaans, or Ghost bird because of the haunting woooo sound it makes.
@@IslandCrimea Boomslangs are extremely venomous, but it's a bit of a strange one because being a rather primitive type of snake, they are actually back-fanged, which makes it difficult for them to actually bite. Most venomous snakes are front fanged. There is only one recorded human death from a boomslang. In 1957 a zoo keeper handling a boomslang got the tiniest nick on his thumb, but it was enough to kill him.
Not necessarily. When a boomslang is threatened, it will puff up its neck, just like in this video. You'll find any number of pictures of this behavior online. I'm not sure that boomslange even eat eggs. I guess they may do so opportunistically, but they are essentially diurnal hunters of live prey. When snakes do eat eggs, they puncture or crush themdirectly after ingesting the egg, after which the contents are swallowed. The egg shell is then usually regurgitated. Grey-headed Bushshrikes are well known predators of snakes.
@@johanrebel You may be right, but I think the shrikes generally hunt rather small snakes, so interesting to see it attack quite a big one. Anyway, rare and unusual footage, and particularly interesting that the bird knows to attack the eyes.

😂 this is a dum snake I guess.
Judging by how that snake looks, it appears it probably had finished eating some kind of prey before it got attacked by the bird. And depending on the outdoor temperature, if it's cold, it will have a hard time moving around. I'm also guessing the snake was trying to warm up outside in the sun, when the bird spotted it. If it's a venomous breed of snake and had just consumed prey, it may have used up crucial amounts of venom to help digest the animal it killed, leaving it nearly defenseless to strike at the bird and kill it. The bird used its instincts to gouge the eyes of the snake to render it helpless.
I’m sure it got one of her eggs. This was payback.
Na it’s puffing up to make itself look bigger. kinda like cobras too except instead of the sides flaring, instead the top & bottom flare. it looks odd i’ll give u that. had he ate something, especially it being that high up still in his body, he would throw it up to help him escape and leave food for whatever was trying to kill it. in this case a bird. sound like a real know it’s all don’t i. lol 😂

Most snakes become docile after they've eaten even if you attack it they'll try to run away and never react aggressively...cobra and a few other snakes are the only ones that is dangerous even with a full belly
Shrikes are pretty determined hunters despite their small size. We don’t have the whole story here, but I believe that the snake was already weakened. A healthy fast snake like an African grass snake is going to escape immediately.
