Recording & Editing Techniques

SInce this video was produced, Pro Tools has had a number of updates with several improvements. There is also now a free version, Pro Tools Intro (NOT Pro Tools First!) that includes all the features narrators need.

Audacity is entirely adequate for this stuff.

This is a protools video. For those of us who use protools and have some experience with it, it is a life saver having someone walk you through these steps. Thanks a bunch!

This is a Pro Tools video for those who have gotten Pro Tools by mistake. Use Audacity, Audition, Twisted Wave. Do NOT go near Pro Tools. If you do, your brain will hurt, and you will feel very stupid when you tell wiser friends who studied before buying. Read the other comments. Please, oh please, dear young Skywalker, do not go to the Darkside.

Sound Forge works great and is easy to use too. I like to master first, edit second, do final mastering tweaks last. I find this makes my voice a pleasure to listen to while I edit it.

Good video! One thing to add is that once you've gotten your markers set up for punch and roll, if you make a mistake you just place your cursor and hit the number 3 on the keypad. It plays your "cue" audio and starts you back into recording. Once you've gotten use to punch and roll recording, you'll never do "finger snap and edit for hours" recording again.

That's what I've been doing. I didn't even know it had a name. I should have assumed there was a name for it. Everything has a name I guess. I do it in Audacity though. It's way more simple.

I edit as I go along, If I make a mistake, I go back and put it right, so when I finish narrating, the whole book is complete and ready to go after going through other things like eq, etc. I use garageband

hi there! When do you think you will make available ACX also in my country here in Italy? Thank you!!!

How difficult is the editing process in for recording and finishing an audiobook? I have a treated space and not much background noise but then there are other little small nuances that goes into the editing I'm sure. Is there ever a chance where lets say you record a 2 hr. book and then you go into editing and things are impossible to fix to meet ACX standards and you have to re-record the entire book again ? or are edits a more simpler fix?

So you want the beginning breath? I've been replacing all of the breaths with a blank sound.

So a starting breath is acceptable?

Show Audacity the majority use Audacity on a budget. I want to know tips for getting around the -60db Noise Floor because mine gets flagged during ACX's Quality check...why do they flag higher quality?...doesn't make sense.

I use Logic 10 which makes everything worlds easier for me than Audacity. There's just one thing: If I'm using pre-roll and I start a touch too early, I'm not sure how to recover what was cut off as easily as this video shows you can in Pro Tools and, somehow, I can't find anyone to answer my question. Help? Also, you guys are way too concerned about what program ACX is using. It's a simple tutorial that, personally, I found very helpful. Chill out.
