I started to carve. I've carved spoons and eggs. I think that the carving group that I carved with is no longer available. It was quite a big group and the teacher guided us through projects. Then we all branched out doing what interested each individual. It started at 9:00 AM and went to 11:30 AM. I went to the "Artistry in Wood" show, bought a couple of books, and some wood carving blanks. There's so many different techniques that I want to learn and one of them is chip carving. I'm downsizing and minimalizing old crafts and useless items, so I haven't had much time "me" time. I subscribed to your tutorials.

How do you prepare the wood for carving if the wood is very hard? Which woods do yoy reccomend and where does ine purchase the fine wood demonstrated?
I suggest northern US basswood. You may purchase this in the www.MyChipCarving.com store. You will find the same wood I carve in that store. If the wood is very hard you can add moisture to the wood as you carve with a spray bottle filled with rubbing alcohol or 50-50 mix of alcohol and water.
The rope design is a classic. I can imagine just carving wood pieces and making a bread basket with a rope carving on it's base.
