So I guess The New Mutants finally stumbled out into cinemas after keeping the world waiting for three years. Is it worth the wait? Is it bold new beginning for the X-Men series? You're kidding, right?

    • Having a concept that exist in our universe exist in this movie's canon is not a lecture on the topic. That's like saying the existence of females is a lecture on femininity. If you want a lecture, walk into a college and sit in the back seat for about the duration of an average movie. Then you'll have your lecture.

    • I'm sorry that you're fragile enough to believe that this is something actually worth crying over. Pity you believe such things. Pity indeed. But for entertainment's sake, and no other reason, shall I spare a moment to go down this rabbit hole? If said theory of yours is the case, which I doubt, where the writers of this movie wish to address internal corruption, could it not be true that the layman writer would shoehorn such a concept in to direct it not at their audience but to their own boss? I certainly don't think this to be the case, but even if it was, such musings are not quite as nonsensical as you guys seem to wish it was. A corporation isn't an individual, and a movie like this is made by and influenced by many differing individuals. That point is utterly moot. Regardless, this certainly didn't make or break this movie. It was probably just casually tossed in as an Easter Egg to the comic book fans.

    @treg5298@treg52983 жыл бұрын
    • I think part of the problem is that with every movie having to fill all the diversity quotas, there's too many people on screen and not enough time to make them characters, so everyone is just a sad shallow stereotype. Sort of, 'If everyone's represented, no one is'

      @TheSchultinator@TheSchultinator3 жыл бұрын
    • @@TheSchultinator This is the type of thing that can, as much as I hate to say it, be handled better in a larger universe. Something like the MCU has space for this, but that shit is expensive to emulate and difficult to pull off. You'd want to first introduce your core, mass market relatable cast. Which happens to cis and straight, and if you plan to milk them for every penny, chinese or white to hit the two major high wealth demographics. We're hitting the point now that a well enough written character will make about the same amount of money regardless of if they are male or female so we can have a bit of room here for that one. Next you can move out to the core supporting case and second tier characters, those who don't need to carry the big issues of plot alone but get the privilege of being fleshed out characters, these can basically hit one diversity metric each and still be relatable enough to be characters. These guys will get plenty of showings in various movies, and might even get a few movies of their own, so they will naturally be marketable, but since they aren't your foundation you don't need them to appeal to everyone at once. This is a great place to tuck all your LGBT, non-neuraltypical, and uncommon minority characters who are otherwise pretty standard and relatable. You get one of these things each, so spread them around wisely. Then we can move out to the fodder yet still recurring supporting cast, these can hit two or three diversity metrics each and still be marketable enough for toys. You won't be fully realizing these guys as fleshed out characters, but they will be marketable. Then we hit the trash characters who only exist for one movie. These can be as diverse as you want, they'll be dead or forgotten next movie anyways.

    • The sad part about This whole "woke nation" is that When it has infested into the Arts and Entertainment world, it's not about the Art anymore, but about the Diversity of these group of characters are. What does that have to do with Anything that these characters have to bring to the table or the story that the viewers must know about. These characters are Poorly written as 1 dimensional and just a Plot Device to use for people to Awe over, and the story's that these writers come up with are Uninteresting, Oversaturated, and Redundant. I'd like to see something New in the Future where The Storys, characters are worth The watch, or pay at least. I think I'm done with U.S. entertainment and Media, esspecially if it's content like this.. fairly Disappointed.

      @NastheVictorious@NastheVictorious3 жыл бұрын
    • It's because critical theory's goal is to change language in order to manufacture policy and have a nonviolent communist revolution. "Diverse" means lots of types, but "diverse" in woke cultural marxist-speak means "not a straight white person". So you get people who feel good by conflating the idea of diversity while not actually bringing diversity, but over-representing tiny niche demographics for woke points and calling that diversity instead. If white western civilization was created by white people and hates communism, then changing language so that they are somehow bad and evil is a tactic to unite all of the other demographics against them and then implement communism little by little under other words like socialism or "universal ____________".

He finds the father sat in his yard with tribal paint on his face in a pattern. Renner sits down next to him and they have a solemn conversation. Eventually Renner asks him "What's with the paint and that pattern?" and the father responds "I dunno, I just made it up." The two then look at each other and laugh. It was a great scene.

Some really good movies can actually pull off a protagonist that is intentionally reprehensible (Silence of the Lambs for example). However, as a rule of thumb, if your audience cannot emphatise with your main characters to at least some degree, you have failed in making a movie (or any story for that matter). I'll bet the fire guy can ONLY shoot fire, he can't do anything interesting with it. He doesn't have thermokinesis he just shoots fire, that's not even pyrokinesis! It's just BEING A FLAMETHROWER. X-Men had a character that could CONTROL fire, but not make it. So that was SLIGHTLY more interesting and they still didn't make that dude a main fucking character! Super powers fucking suck now, it's all this super bland shit that you can't do anything WITH. There's a reason Invisible Woman's super power isn't turning invisible, it's creating force fields that can be used to warp light and make herself invisible. Cause just being invisible isn't a very flexible power, it's only useful for infiltration, that's it. I guess I could see room to sneak Dani in as gay, since she was more bossy than girly when the group started. But that’s kinda giving in to unpleasant stereotypes about women in authority.... not exactly progressive thinking. Karma and Magma would be a ... HOT couple though! I felt the fear in her as she confronted the one that the movie protrayed as the main character, and her inner turmoil as she struggled to convince herself to end the life of someone that she didn't want to kill. She was a doctor, not a seasoned soldier or a psychopath, and she knew that her wards would hate her for it. It felt like her fear was what killed her, not her inability. Also, her focus was probably wavering due to blood loss. But yeah, the movie as a whole was weak.

  • The basic problems: 1) An evil corp who wanted assassins would pay the kids and give them nice facilities. So then you could build suspicion of it being too nice and generous, and move to spooky stuff happening. 2) Illyana would just march everybody out through one of her portals, because admittedly hellworlds are not fun but being held prisoner is also bad. You could fix this by having Illyana not be able to portal yet, or having her magic fairly weak for some reason, thus tempting her to the classical deal with the devil that got her in trouble.

    @suburbanbanshee@suburbanbanshee3 жыл бұрын
    • suburbanbanshee or make use of your bad guy. A key part of many horror stories is the unkillable nearly invincible monster, that needs every surviving person to band together to even survive. And they were clearly going for a thriller/horror vibe. So imagine, the doctor was the one keeping them prisoners and her barriers were so potent that even in her sleep she was untouchable. Even the powers of the kids get suppressed into weaker forms inside the barriers. This would excuse the teleport problem. And we could have gotten a montage of the kids retelling how they used their powers against her at some point and she didn’t even take a scratch. Really pump up that feeling of a god amongst men. And the finale was all about the kids, trying to even land a scratch on her. Then she looses her patience with the kids and is about to use her barriers to suffocate them all, and the fear powers of the main character then create that bear that they fought in the film. It’s claws scratch and bite the shield, until a tiny hole is made. That is when the main characters fear powers finally reach her. And we see a large man slapping a young girl, telling her that this is for her own good. The doctor freezes at that memory and loses focus for just a moment. Which is when the bear attacks once more and kills her. Also fix their traumatic experiences. The MCs fear of bears made no sense. How difficult would it have been to write a scene where she was out camping with her family and then a bear attacked. Forcing her father to save him and her in the car, while the mother was too slow and the bear kills her. Then the bear attacks the car, scratching and breaking everything until it tires out and just drags the now dead mother into the forest. This all took me 5 minutes to come up with. How difficult is this?

      @frankwest5388@frankwest53883 жыл бұрын
    • @@frankwest5388 Not to mention the lack of death. I haven't sen the movie but I highly doubt they killed any of the kids, if they were planning on sequels. With only the evil Doctor lady around as a villain it doesn't leave a lot for the horror elements to kill. It takes a special kind of horror film to be convincingly scary when no one ever dies. As for the evil corporation it does make no sense. These kids had some impressive mutant powers, yet their training seemed to be third string budget at best. It wasn't bad enough to be "truly horrible" something like the weapon X program with it's triggers, torture and psycho conditioning. But it wasn't the kill them with Kindness route either. They didn't even attempt to look like a legitimate school to the kids nor buy them off with luxuries and gifts. If it was just crazy test to see what worked it would of been more convincing if the kids all had crappy powers the Evil people felt were expendable for testing mutants with. But even that would require some kids to have "accidents" as the test prove lethal.

But not with this generic bullshit but with things different for each of them. One is beeing lured with kindness and so on. It would have been something to go and or pounce on when the x-men fight them for example. Giving each of them a reason to fight for the cooperation. They really could have used the fears the kids have and for example made the cooperation fix/safe them. Or if they want them to become good x-men then use the doctor as some sort of final boss. • For the most part, the characters seem to be fairly close to their comic book inspirations, which were created in the mid 1980s. Illyana could open portals, Dani could manifest people's fears, Sam could fly (though he couldn't control his speed or direction very well and tended to just go in a straight line until he hit something, hence his superhero name Cannonball), and Rahne could turn into a wolf. Roberto, however, did not have fire powers. He could absorb sunlight, which turned him into a black silhouette and gave him super strength, hence his superhero name, Sunspot. Dani and Rahne had a telepathic link that was never really explained, but it only worked when Rahne was in wolf form (because Native Americans are close to nature or something). Rahne was also deeply religious and came from a very conservative background, and considered her powers a curse. There was also a Vietnamese girl named Xian who could control people's minds.

    @graemesmith6721@graemesmith67212 жыл бұрын
  • Roberto does not shoot fire, he has super strength powered by sunlight. Dani and Rahne are both straight. Lockheed is Kitty Pryde's dragon, not Ilyanna's (although they had some adventures together). Sam is lanky and blond, not sallow and ugly. And the Demon Bear actually WAS Dani's parents. I loved this story when I was in high school, now it's been sh*t on like everything else.

    • This franchise is notorious for shitting on the source material because the directors are too lazy. Half its movies changed a ton of shit from the comics that no one asked to be changed. Bryan Singer did this with the entire original trilogy (Brett Ratner obviously had to continue his story), and Gavin Hood made what should’ve been a dark, gritty Wolverine origin into a goofy, bloodless family comedy. The only movies they got somewhat right were First Class, The Wolverine, Days of Future Past, Logan, and the Deadpool movies.

They tackled lots of touchy subjects, and IMO, had one of the more fun adventure/story arcs in New Mutants: Special Edition #1 (and concluding in X-Men: Annual #9... both illustrated by Art Adams). It's too bad that the creators of this movie didn't take some more time, care and maybe a few risks with this one, because there really was some great material back then.
