Turn Off Your Computer Every Night, Here's Why
You probably heard that turning off your computer for the night can be harmful to it. But you must’ve also heard the conflicting point of view: that you actually should turn it off when not using it for long. So what’s the right thing to do then?
The belief that your desktop should work all the time comes from the dawn of the computer era - the 1980s. Back then, computers were made of different materials, and frequently turning them off and back on could potentially damage them. But what about now?

Sleep mode VS. Hibernation 2:24
Uninterruptible power supply (Highly recommended) 6:12
#computers #laptops #brightside
SUMMARY:
- When you turn on your computer, it triggers a little power surge that creates some stress on the system.
- Modern computers, be it laptops, desktops, or tablets, are specially designed not to be turned completely off.
- Many of the computer parts have moving parts of their own, and they need time to get up to speed.
- When you shut down your device, it first closes all the programs running on it for all users.
- There are several things you can do as well: they are hibernation and sleep mode.
- Both of them allow you to leave your computer on and save your work while reducing energy consumption.
- Sleep mode conserves energy a bit worse than hibernation, but it allows your computer to start up almost immediately.
- Hibernation is a deeper sleep mode that doesn’t use any energy at all, just like when you shut it down, but takes more time to shake off.
- On Windows 10, you can only use sleep mode by default, and to add hibernation you’ll need to open the taskbar and type power options.
- On Mac, you’ll have a different default mode for desktop and portable computers: sleep mode for desktops, and hibernation for laptops.
- On Mac laptops, there’s also an option to enter a standby mode. The device will automatically enter this state after three hours of sleeping if there’s nothing connected to it, including the charger.
- But keeping your data safe while your computer is on is tricky because there can be power surges or outages.
- Make sure to buy a UPS, or uninterruptible power supply, to save you from headache in case of a power outage.
- It’s a device that will provide an emergency power load to your computer if the mains power suddenly isn’t there for some reason.

"You heard that turning off your computer for the night can be harmful for it" for the 25 years ive been alive and the 21 years of remembering my life i never heard anyone say this
The only way you can know if your computer has failed is to turn it on, but if it fails to boot, you don't know whether there was a hardware failure when you turned it off or when you turned it on, but either way, if you'd never turned it off, it would most likely still be working now.
Weird, I have heard this most of my life.
@@grandpaobvious nah u wrong
If you leave your PC on all the time, It's a good idea to restart your computer from time to time, which can fix Windows problems and clear memory.
usually i leave it 24/24 or put it to sleep. i restart it every 7 days and it had no problems for 3 years.
@MacCraker wait wheres the problem he never assumed you are using windows

I heard it’s better to leave a computer running constantly with a HDD. It is easier on it to keep running than to turn it off and start it up again. A hard drive only has so much spin-ups until it can fail. This is why some office buildings or other places leave them on 24/7 and can last much longer that way/
I’ve heard that too and that’s my excuse for forgetting to turn off my pc.
One can set HHD to never turn off
One reason for turning off modern computers is similar to the reason for storing data on external devices: You don't necessarily want everything to be connected to the network 100% of the time for security reasons. Also, if there is a lightning storm, make sure your computer is turned off and unplugged, and have a good surge protector as well. Another reason to store data on external drives that also works for cloud storage: Data backup. NOTE: This does not work for Windows programs and apps because they also have Windows registry entries that do not transfer easily if something happens to your main computer.
If you get the right kind of UPS for your desktop, they often include software that you can install and a USB cable that will connect your UPS to your computer. The software can shout your computer off safely if you UPS is about to run out of power. It also gives you a way to monitor the power feeding your computer as well as different options that you can adjust to change the behavior of the UPS. I have one on mine that has a setting that I can either have the computer stays on as long as possible before shutting down or I can change the setting to safely turn off the computer if the power is off for more than 5 minutes. Most have a setting you can change the time. It also keeps a log of the power outages and how long the power was off. Most of these devices have an audible sound that occurs when the device switches to battery. You can set quiet times or even disable the audible alarm through the interface. I usually leave mine on all the time because I have my computers set to receive their automatic updates during my off times like when I'm in bed. All of my computers run Windows 10. My computers receive these updates too. But I have my computers set to restart themselves during the morning hours when I'm sleeping. If you do leave your computer on all of the time, restarting you computer at least once a week will help purge the memory as well.

7:00: Some UPS's have software that will communicate with the computer and shut down the computer if power is not restored within a specified period (or when the UPS has a specified amount of power left).
Or If you configure it in a way It Hibernates the computers which is the best choice in case of a sudden power outage.
Back in the 90s on IRC we used to flex our system uptime, especially if someone jumped on a server with years of uptime. These days I turn my PC off at night, unless I am specifically leaving it to run tasks while I am sleeping.
One recommendation I have for smart phone users is to go into your settings and set a auto phone off/phone on schedule. It minimizes certain charging issues if you charge when you sleep and lets the processors rest. My phone still runs great after two years and the batteries last days for general use.
Nah... I'm the owner of the phone I decided to let it be turned on(forever), and I restart it every week or so
And who will enter device encryption password and SIM PIN code after such restart?

From a purely mechanical point of view it is not a good idea to leave your computer, especially a laptop, on all the time. Computers when powered on have fans inside which regulate temperatures to critical components such as the CPU and GPU. Fans draw in air and also dust which accumilate's on the fans themselves, reducing efficiency, and also on the heat sink of the components which need to be cooled and will eventually lead to a complete system failure and a very expensive repair bill - if a repair is even possible. As in the case of many Apple products. Some high end systems such as data servers are specifically designed to run 24/7 in an environment where they are also monitored 24/7. The average computer is not designed that way,

Mine is always on sleep whenever I don't use it, I only restart it when I start noticing it's getting slow. I only shut it down when I know I am not gonna use it for days. I have been doing this for so so many years, no problems, all is Gucci.
Hi, did yo unplug your computer when not in used?
It is fairly true that constantly switching off and on electronics stress the components, or at least it used to be. Not sure with modern electronics
very helpful
I say do both and go to sleep, however do a shutdown every 1-2 months to let it clean itself out.

I have windows 10 pro with ssd. If I put my computer in sleep or hibernation mode it will "go to sleep" as you would expect, BUT when you press a key or move the mouse, the computer and fans come on but windows will not boot up. You can't press the power button to shut it down either. It does absolutely nothing. You have to turn off the power at the power supply, and then it may or may not boot up. The fans come on but there is no "bios beep". The only way I've found to get it to boot up again is to unplug everything including the mouse, keyboard or any other usb device. However, if I do a normal shutdown or restart it boots up in 4 seconds with absolutely no problem at all. It's only when I use sleep or hibernation mode I have problems with windows won't boot and the power button won't function. Figure that one out.
It is like your body you sleep and you take time to get out of bed.

A computer technician's busiest time is a Monday morning: People go into work after the weekend and find someone's switched off their computer. When they switched it back on it doesn't work. A lot of faults occur when you cut the power to a computer, even if you allow it to shut down correctly. A daily reboot usually clears any residual memory corruptions; although it is good to perform software maintenance at least monthly, weekly if at all possible, and daily doesn't hurt.
Which software is used by bright side for making videos??🤔
Well as a computer technician it's better on your HDD as keeping it warm is less likely to have HDD failure. When the HDD is cold it's more likely to fail when having to reboot when cold.
Better what, on or off?

New UPS batteries can also communicate with computer and computer can also shutdown by itself if ups sends signal that the power is out
0:35 It won't neccessarily damage it but it will accelerate wear on things like the on/off switch and the hard disk. The hard disk has to spin up every time you switch it on, and in that process uses far more power than just bringing out of sleep or hibernation.
Engineers have taken note of how inconvenient it is to close all the apps you have running, save and close all your work, and shutdown only to wait until the device boots when you switch it back on again.
Happy new year brightside.

My sister has a Chromebook and she would often get problems with it after a few weeks of simply setting it to 'Sleep' by closing the lid on the computer. I showed her how to find and press the 'POWER OFF' button on her Chromebook and simply turning the computer 100% off every now and then totally got rid of all of the problems she was having with her computer. The same thing for her Router, I showed her how when it was having problems that simply turning it off, waiting 10 minutes, and then turning it back on, would get rid of the 'static electrical charges' that were causing the problems in the thing. Just turning an electronic device off, waiting 10 minutes, then turning it back on, would often solve problems that device was having.
I use Linux. I never shut down the machine. You don't need to shut them down as the OS is designed to run indefinitely. There's been times my desktop machine has accumulated a period of 3-4 months of uptime between reboots and it will play steam games, movies, file serving and editing. I also have a laptop near top-of-the-line, but that one I do reboot all the time. Shutdown or not, it's not as big a deal with Linux.
Happy new year!!!! :)
Great info 2 know 4 people that use computers alot ...
Suspend doesn't move anything, it's already there. Also, on windows at very least, it is actually called hybrid sleep (it copies ram to disk, then goes to sleep, so if power is lost, it can still be resumed)
