Which deer screening should you plant, how much should you plant and how wide should you plant it? Deer screening can be awesome but make sure that you don't fall for some of the fads out there, that can cost much more than they are worth!

Planted over a linear acre 25 ft wide of your screening blend, also did miscanthus from Maple River around outside perimeter! Long & short range solution to a wide open field. Thanks Jeff!

They love to nip Sunn Hemp in early summer but by the time hunting season rolls around they don’t touch it and it provides a great screen!! Plus it adds tons of nitrogen back into the soil
Last several years I've used Egyptian Wheat. Works well for me, but being an annual it has to be planted every year. Turkeys seem to like the tops and I have walked right up to them. Wasn't expecting that. Anyway... great video and I'm hoping for next year to finally get some SG down. I like the idea of being a perennial and not all that extra work like with an annual. A question... What's recommended ph for SG? Thank You 😉

You are welcome! There are always better options than Johnson grass. Really more of a weed? It stays fairly low and does not provide great year-round cover.
Ok, maybe I’ve got a weird Johnson grass hybrid at my place. It grows about 7 feet tall and it’s super thick. We don’t get snow much in Arkansas, so it really stays upright most of the year. It’s pretty invasive and hardy with our hot summers. The invasiveness seems to be what everybody says is the downside… And that it’s not a native.. I just didn’t know if you had any experience with it. I’m planting switch this year but I’ve got a couple of fields filled with Johnson.
Great screening video. Im in the process of trying to screen in my plots and access. Do u like to screen in along the woods as well? And will the deer come through the switch grass or do u mow a path trough it were you want the deer to come out
This video is almost made for me. This is my biggest issue is not enough screening and cover being surrounded by big AG fields. Ive been planting lots of dogwood and spruce trees but those are longer timeframe. My plan is a decent switch "wall" to give me the barrier I need to go from my small clover pasture and pass through plot to the open farmers field. Im hoping 8-10 feet wide should do me well enough to get some cover.
That all sounds really good! 8-10' is good, especially for tunnel walls...
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 That was my plan is about 8 to 10 feet thick on the outside of the spruce trees I have been planting and then eventually remove the switch once the spruce has gotten thick enough to replace that wall and then move the switch to the inside perimeter. I've also been trying to close in alot of the pasture that was left for decades to grow wild and have zero in terms of habitat benefits with dogwood bunches in a checkerboard fashion to create more cover in the area, as I'm surrounded by huge AG fields with pretty much zero cover besides windbreak lines of trees.
Hey Jeff, i was just wondering if there was any hurt in adding one more spraying of simazine when I plant switchgrass to try to keep weeds at bay longer
Hi Joe...there isn't too much, especially if spaced out by roughly 69 days. However too much at 1 time can keep the SG seed from germinating
Would you ever utilize minerals to establish pattern of use at new food plot? Won’t be putting buckwheat in for a while down south
Hi Ryan...that's not a bad idea. I like minerals in open areas for summer buck pics and inventory
Jeff, was this video made this spring? Just wondering about the snowpack this past winter. It looks like it did extremely well holding up to the snow if this was this spring.
