    • My problem is forehand block against spinny sidespin loop. I can block anything on the backhand, it's never been an issue. My only defense against a hook loop to the forehand is make good and sure I loop... _first._

  • You are the best. I can recommend moving half a step backwards. Most guys i know which are bad blockers are glued to the table and take everything right there. This sometimes works with short or half long topspins but as soon as i play some faster ones right to the end of the table nothing comes back because it reduces control. Look at training videos from pros how far away they actually are. And guys please learn this! Basic blocking is not that hard and it is annoying af if you practice with someone and never get more than 2 balls in a row back even from guys who play a couple of leagues above you or weird sidespin blocks or horrible placement.

  • Nice and Very useful tips as always, Seth. Id love to see your thoughts about atacking no spin serves and no spin balls in general, since a see many players ( me included) struggling with those shots.

    @tiagomendes847@tiagomendes847 Жыл бұрын
    • For me I feel it should be treated in between an underspin and a topspin. The hard part is that you have to make all the work to make the spin since it has none. So holding the ball when attacking is important. Sometimes when my opponent flips a short push to their fh to my bh i chop it because it is really dead almost under and coming quickly and I feel no time to make a stroke so I chop it back and it seems to neutralize the point.

      @PechPongTT@PechPongTT Жыл бұрын
  • I learned blocking from playing people in the park that didnt do heavy spin shots, so I got this habit of loosening my grip/wrist on contact and taking energy out of the ball. After having started playing in a club, people seem to want me to actively push against the ball more. I am slowly learning how to do this because it seems it takes control of the spin when you do it this way instead of playing with the spin. Both things is good to have in your repertoire, like you mention @ 17:00 ... it was also impossible to block by solely using the energy of the incoming spin against some of the highest quality loops that I encountered when I started playing in a club.

    @z0uLess@z0uLess Жыл бұрын
    • Good Thoughts! a loose grip is very important I agree! thanks for sharing :)

      @PechPongTT@PechPongTT Жыл бұрын
    • @@PechPongTT Btw, do you know why table tennis players often stretch before playing as part of the warmup and not after? From what I have learned doing other types of athletics, stretching the muscle before a workout is generally not a good idea, especially in running. One interesting thought is also that, when blocking, people should not place themselves in a "defensive mentality". A block is also a type of agression when you move against the rythm, balance and position of your opponent. Saying to yourself that you are being defensive when blocking may cause you to form bad habits of backing away from the table or to generally be passive and let your opponent dictate the flow of the game.

      @z0uLess@z0uLess Жыл бұрын
  • Thanks for another great video, Seth! Your channel is such a gem! I love the tip on pushing down on the ball when they are very spinny! A situation I especially struggle with is players that play quite hard. I manage to block the ball, but the speed is too high to keep the ball on the table. Any tips how I could increase my control over those balls?

    @polygoon@polygoon Жыл бұрын
    • Hmm that seems like a tough situation, maybe try to keep a loose grip and when the ball comes try to feel you are absorbing all the energy. It’s hard for me to diagnose without seeing it tho.

      @PechPongTT@PechPongTT Жыл бұрын
    • You could try to give the ball some top spin, like in 17:35 of the video. It takes speed out of the ball and gives the block a curve so that it doesn't go over the table (or into the net) that easily. A top notch German coach just wrote a nice article about it where he explained in detail why this is the way professional players block (most often).

      @TP-mp5lk@TP-mp5lk Жыл бұрын
    • @@TP-mp5lk what a good insight. I know Dima does it like that, and I kind-of adopted this a bit in my blocking, but it makes a lot of sense for the hard balls. Do you have a link to the German article maybe? 🙏

      @polygoon@polygoon Жыл бұрын
  • Seth, your channel and this video are excellent! You explained how to do a block, but when do you do one? Would it make sense to try to counter loop a loop when you have a chance? I'm at intermediate level, and of course the pros can counter loop a loop, but to try to put topspin on a spinny loop is difficult to keep it on the table for me. Is it better to block this type of ball or learn to loop it? ;) A block is the only option sometimes when the ball is fast and you are close or caught by surprise. For example, do you loop from a distance, but block close to the table? Thanks for any clarity you can give!

    @insaneepp@insaneepp Жыл бұрын
  • Great quality video as usual! Thanks for the awesome content and effort you put into them. I am curious about your training schedule. In your videos you have shown us a ton of drills for different parts of our game. I wonder how you do it yourself? Do you follow a set program or just go with whatever you need to work on at the time? Also, how often do you train to feel you are playing sharp?

    @SirTulaman@SirTulaman Жыл бұрын
    • Hey thanks, yeah I usually like to focus on a few things at a time so for example I’ve been working on improving my loops against heavy backspin pushes because they give me trouble and every session I do a drill or two to target that. I try to not lose sight of my overall game and do other drills to keep things strong. And slowly I progress that way.

  • Great video. It is not easy to find good info about blocking i guess because all sportschool students learn this element while working in pairs. So they consider it to be too easy for single video. Seth, in every video you speak about "dead" or "flat" balls. Can you make some video about how to play against short pimples or anti rubbers. There are a huge amount of content about long pimples, but quite nothing about anti-s or short.

    • Yeah I can make some info about this. I have a video planned out I just have to film and edit it. (Anti)

  • Hey Seth, regarding the section on blocking wide to the backhand, is there any tips you have to ensure the opponent's first loop is cross-court (to your BH) rather than a loop kill down the line?

    @rileywoo@rileywoo Жыл бұрын
    • The wider your initial push is to their bh the harder it is for them to go cross court with their fh. This is the opposite of what you asked for because the simple answer is no you can’t ensure your opponent doesn’t go down the line with their forehand other than punishing them and blocking it wide when they do it the first time.

  • Hi Seth I have a question not related to the subject, if you don't mind I see that you are using Hybrid K on both sides, are you using max in both sides or 2.0 mm. also, you use Tibhar VS Unlimited, have you tried Tibhar Shang Kun Hybrid AC, what is the difference comparing to VS FYI, I use Harimoto ALC, forehand Dignics 05 and backhand Donic blue grip C2 thanks

    @mohamedaboubakr2544@mohamedaboubakr2544 Жыл бұрын
    • I have tried the Shang Kun blades the AC is a nice blade, I found it to be good speed but on short touches I had a hard time controlling the balls like it was very bouncy, my VS unlimited is quite well broken in and I like it that way I got a new one for a spare and it seems fast and less feeling so I think I need to break it in for about a year before I can put it in tournament play.
