CAN I MAKE MORE THAN 500 HP WITH AN ALL-MOTOR 5.3L? WILL HEADS, CAM AND INTAKE (HCI) MAKE 500 HP? IS AN L33 A GOOD MOTOR? HOW MUCH POWER CAN A JUNKYARD 5.3L MAKE? HOW WELL DO TFS 220 HEADS WORK? WHAT IS THE BEST CAM TO MAKE 500 HP? WHAT INTAKE SHOULD I RUN? SHOULD I RUN FLAT-TOP PISTONS? CAN I MILL MY HEADS? CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO WHERE I TOOK A HIGH-MILEAGE, JUNKYARD L33 (ALUMINUM) 5.3L AND TURNED IT INTO AN ALL-MOTOR TERROR! AFTER MAKING 480 HP WITH A BTR CAM AND FAST INTAKE, I DECIDED IT WAS TIME TO TOP THE 500-HP MARK! I THEN ADDED THE NECESSARY HEAD FLOW AND A MODIFIED INTAKE TO PUSH THE POWER BEYOND THE 500-HP MARK.

  • Great work! I love hearing the screaming V8. So many LS powered trucks pull campers. My LQ4 03 2500HD does, you know 7800lbs of 5th wheel slows it down some. Steady wind resistance and various grades keep it in “Work mode” at 2000-2400 rpm, 60-70+ mph. But the real torque at part throttle is at 2500 rpm and above, or 75 mph or better. So where does a guy hunt for moving the curve 4-500 rpm lower? Use the early iron head LQ4 camshaft, LM7 cam, or advance the stock 1721 GM cam, or? Thanks for your continuing content.

  • Well Mr. Holdener. I am one of the tight LSA guyes. :) 2.04" intake valve in a 40.625 CID cylinder = 19.91 CID pr. Inch of valve diameter and calls for a LSA of about 109.5 LSA according to DVs 128 rule. The point of course is getting adequate overlap for the job, right? If we just assume the mild BTR cam has 217/237/114, the overlap is identical to a cam with 217/217/109 ;) That is why it works so well. Its really is a 109 LSA cam, just with a lot of additional exhaust opening timing that confuses almost everybody.

    @finnroen2334@finnroen23348 ай бұрын
    • I am on the DV train too. Typically, 109 and narrower is spot on for LS engines. Richard hasn't tested a single 109 (some ppl say the TN cam is actually 109) cam to my knowledge, but he has tested several 108s which should get all the torque available. But, all the 108s tested are only ~.550 lift which doesn't take full advantage of the flow of the rec port head. I'm ready for him to test 109 or narrower with at least .600 lift on a rec port ly6.

  • Awesome, I like the tests. Trick flow heads are not bad 30 more HP. ...?... Definitely interesting. A question I keep thinking about is how can you maximize and keep a long steady Torque Curve. In the testing there was one cam that had a nice long Plateau of torque. Do you need rotating mass to increase torque?

I've only seen more crankshaft lightening in a lot of UK engines dance I first got interested in the Buick aluminum 8 cylinder that Rover took over. Of course racing the rotating assembly is the rods pistons as well as the crank. But I've seen the people in the UK going straight to the crank and cutting weight there. Everything from motorcycle, all 4, 6, 8 and even 12 cylinder engines. The North American prefer the big throaty big block engines. It's just my limited view. I appreciate your replies. Or you will end up on the channel Just Rolled In. Here is a thought. Do all of this, while keeping the variable cam timing system in place, and use basic tuner or whatever might be needed to make it run.

  • Richard, I just found your channel, and I hope you get this. I've got an 07 four-wheel drive, Yukon. I bought it minus the engine. We took a cast iron 5.3 block put a high volume oil pump, one set of top, and one set of side oiler lifters. So there's one tip and one side oiler lifters per cylinder, just to give it a good oil bath. We then added a set of cathedral port 706 aluminum heads, and a 6.0 Corvette cam. We also built it as a DOD delete. The majority of the parts came from Summit. My question is. Did I increase my performance by any real amount? Being as I never knew what it was like before the original engine came out of it. I'm thinking of doing the intake and if I went with the cam you used in this video. What kind of horse power numbers could I achieve? I'm trying to get the best horse power and torque, but try to stay within my configuration. I have Champaign dreams, but live on a baloney budget. Lol I hope that this reaches you. Thank you for all of your time and advice in advance. God Bless.

  • It occurred to me while watching this that at 325 cubic inches, it's very close to the old 327(326.5 cubic inches). At 365 HP stock it is also close to the rating of some of those older HIPO 327's. Mind you it does it with much less compression and a milder cam. Would be interesting to see a comparison. Makes me yearn for an old F-body with a mild 5.3 and a 5 or 6 speed transmission. Very drivable I'm sure.

    @briand2614@briand26148 ай бұрын

  • Another great video, Richard! Question: this is exactly what I want to do with a '96 Impala SS LS swap I'm currently sourcing a motor for. I'd like the car to be 500hp all motor. I won't have a fancy ported and polished head though. So, considering I'm willing to take the motor fully apart for this build, could I get away with as cast trick flows and maybe an over bore, domed pistons, etc etc to get to the same 500? Or will it simply require / be most cost effective to do all the head work you've done here? Thank you, you're an excellent resource!!

  • Can you take this build to the extreme? What would some higher compression pistons do with some e85. What would it take to get to 600hp (is that even possible) n/a

    @bluestangGT2001@bluestangGT20018 ай бұрын
    • Very possible, however keep in mind this engine that he has is basically Better than fbos and a tune since there is 0 restriction between anything. Having a compression ratio of 12 or 13:1 is possible with e85, e85 also has an extra oxygen atom so it add more power other then aggressive timing. What would help a lot would be drastically decreasing the stroke, and boring the engine, this will allow the pistons to spin faster creating more rpm and more hp. There is a 400hp k24 all motor, if that’s possible then getting a 5.3 liter engine to 600hp is very possible.

      @2seep@2seep8 ай бұрын
    • Changing bore and stroke is not the answer. Cam timing, compression, intake and things like dry sump oiling will allow this motor to creep up to 600 hp
