"One must imagine Sisyphus happy" Is a quote that has been going around the internet for a while now. But what does it mean? Who originated it? And what can we learn from it?
This is the story of Sisyphus
Thanks to Ted Ed for the animations to tell the story even better!

  • The fact that Albert Camus died in a sudden car crash is the embodiment of what he spoke of in his books. The randomness and chaos of the universe, and the mortality of every man. RIP

    • Opium induced car accidents are more of an eventuality as opposed to a random thing that just happens........ Stop trying to sound smart when you don't know anything about the guy. He was a narcissist, sexist, and a gay homophobe who abused virtually every person he knew personally His death in a car accident, when he would regularly drive while high on hard drugs and mind altering substances... predictable and eventually going to happen. He played Russian Roulette with life every day.....like most French philosophers, nihilistic to the end.

    • More like lack of observation which lead to not adapting to be prepared for the crash. I stick to buses. Why risk a car crash when a big buss is more sturdy and you don't have to drive yourself? It just seems random. Truth is it's your own ignorance. Adaptation concept. Unfortunately, can't really adapt when dead. I KNOW death though. Better then Albert did. So I've been more prepared in many things. It's awesome. People are really missing out on how wonderful it is. Imagine having meaning and purpose forever. That's the bolder. And we all know car crashes are common. That's not random. That's choosing to risk death when you're behind the wheel. People know the risks. They just pretend they "have too" when they don't question and challenge why.

    • @@VeldazandteaBus crashes can happen to you know? As a matter of a fact, if I am to crash in a accident, to choose the bus is to chose safety in the design of the bus but you lack independence in the outcome. You aren't at the driver's seat, you can't prevent or minimize the damage. Much of life is random, you can't prepare for everything. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try to prevent things happening to you nor does it mean you should always risk it. That's up to your own judgement. Edit : Come to think of it, I am sure there is something to be said about the danger of big and heavy structures like the bus: less control, 'the bigger they are..." and such. I think ultimately Albert mainly spoke about a mindset he choose to have when in a situation that seems unfair . I am sorry but your whole comment sounds...snarky? Maybe that's not the right word but it sounds a lot like idk you know better and everyone else ...doesn't? Like I am sorry but everyone else is doing what you are doing, even Albert did. I think you might be confused or maybe I just have a different understanding of what he meant.

Sisyphus is happy because each day he gets a little closer to a new high, just as we get a closer to our goal, and once its accomplished, while we dont start from 0 like Sisyphus, we start something new again, which is a new kind of 0. So one must imagine Sisyphus happy, because we are ourselves happy when we roll our own boulders.

It doesn't matter how he feels, he's not pushing the rock in defiance he is literally cursed to continue to push the rock. (And tbh he would probably feel neutral about it after an eternity of doing it). Whereas if he has a choice but chooses to push the rock, that's actual defiance. Like when Gordon Liddy decided not to cut a deal with the authorities on the Watergate scandal when everybody else got out of prison, because of his character. How does a sentenced prisoner act defiantly by living in prison?

We recognise that the search for fulfilment, the search for happiness, is a sisyphusian task, yet we never give up, we are in constant rebellion, we keep looking where nothing will ever be found, but this is enough to fill ones heart. Sisyphus happiness doesn't stand from a recognition of the absurd but precisely by his everlasting denial of it. Because even if punished with eternal torment, Sisyphus says to himself: All is well.

    • Forgive me for this *Nerd Moment* but Sisyphus deserved it, 100%. In terms of being an all around awful person, he gave Zeus a run for his money. He was a king and a tyrant, a bloodthirsty one at that. If not for the Gods, he *was* the status quo. This isn't about fighting it, but the pitfalls of corrupted power and a bloated ego. He got what was coming to him. Honestly he was punished for the wrong thing, you'd think Hades would've got to him sooner for the whole "murdering guests" bit (company was *sacred* in Ancient Greece, ever heard of Hestia?). But Sisyphus being punished forever after living a full life is a delicious irony, even if a lot of people no doubt suffered along the way. By most tellings he was also a dick to his wife. What a boomer. The Myth of Sisyphus is not his story. Camus uses his punishment to explore a philosophical idea, without the muddy details that make that message less poignant. Interesting? Yes! Not inspirational.

  • Im really into philosophy For a long time i was fascinated with immortality or an immortal consious They say it would be boring being for so long, but that never made sense and didnt derive from very deep thought, Infact i realized most people dont really know how to think very deep thoughts, theyd rather just immediately say what they see on the surface So you ask why sisyphus would be happy pushing a boulder for eternity? Maybe youre a musician, or an athlete, or a biologist, Our work takes a lot of studying and understanding, and you may look around, and notice some people dont really find it to be unenjoyable, they take great pleasure in the challenges of their craft To follow ones nature, We are all pushing our own boulders up hills, but the reality is most people cry, and complain, and get depressed about it And even though they complain, the boulder doesnt go anywhere or change, its still a heavy rock just like its always been Even the best musicians feel they have so much more to get better at, Lets imagine an afterlife for a musician, maybe an afterlife where he gets to enjoy playing his instrument for eternity We could stop at that but then i had a thought, it would be hell if in the afterlife you "mastered" the instrument, there would be no more challenge, youd eventually run out of combinations to play But what if in the afterlife its just practice forever? It would be more satisfying to measure your eternal growth rather than to be endgame from the very beginning Sisyphus is happy, because he's in strongman heaven, The rush of pushing the body and struggling is greater than you might think, Most people*** dont believe its a fun way to live, but these same people are usually really dumb, chasing after normality and comfort, becoming one of the "masses" that support all the things that make us ask "how can someone be so ignorant?"

    @selfactualizer2099@selfactualizer20998 ай бұрын
    • I was thinking about the concept a while back. Immortality, in this world, is seen as a disturbing and boring concept by the huge mass. People seek comfort, and Sisyphus did too. He stopped when he received the punishment. It taught him to not seek comfort because comfort is subjective. Immortality when looked with the perspective you've mentioned is indeed wonderful. It's all about the man's brain. It can make even the worst struggle, a pleasure.

That chase to happiness isn't even getting it but instead just living in the moment. Live our lives to the most as possible, and what do you propose that is, raise a family, eventually that wont be enough, gain money and wealth, eventually that wont be enough, find a new practice that would benefit the earth, eventually that work would wither away and so few would remember it. I do agree with many things you say, but not believing in sanctity and peace, true bliss for our efforts and work on these short lives we live in I cannot agree with

So one day he gives up, a broken man. But he's not broken. He keeps going. He is happy, because this is HIS task. In that way, he has control. In that way, he's won.

  • Life is such a b1tch, it's fycking beyond me. I get what Camus said, but if life consists mainly of suffering, and then we all gonna end up as a meal for maggots, then yeah... Asking what's the fycking point would be ironic. It's so damn fycked up. I get to play video games all day long, but when I stop playing them, I feel like shit. I can get drunk, party hard, but after it ends, I'm gonna feel worse than initally. I get it's all about the mindset, that Democrit of Abdery didn't have shit, and he still was happy, but that's kinda a leap of faith as well. I've also heard about those "abusrd heroes" Caus wrote about, about conqueror, and shit, but idk, it's a hard pill to swallow. If I'm gonna end up as a feast for maggots, then better sooner than later, even though I'm gonna say otherwise, when I actually face death. I'm gonna notice the value of life, and I'm gonna think of all the things I didn't do but I wish I did. But now I don't feel like doing any of these (or rather to fight to get them), and that adds to this whole absurdity of existence. It's such a fyking cruel yoke. I hope the ww3 comes, then I maybe gonna get to kill some people, and feel this thrill I have never felt, or maybe I'm gonna die right off the bat. But maybe then I would live up to what Camus is saying. Live for this short thill, and be ready to die at any moment. Ehh, I wish I could just forget all of this, work hard, pursue ambitious goals restlessly, and you know, not think about bs.

He is happy because he is living. He is happy because he decides to embrace his situation instead of running from it. He is happy because he chooses to be happy, instead of letting the cruelty of his situation destroy his soul. He knows he cannot ever master his situation and instead masters his thoughts and actions, choosing to be happy and roll the boulder even though he can never succeed to push it all the way to the top.
