The Constitutional Court yesterday dismissed an application from Jacob Zuma and the MK Party, to recuse several justices in the matter between the Party and the IEC. Zuma and MK wanted the judges off the case. Defend Our Democracy Executive Director Zaakirah Vadi has more.

This is the most complicated case. The president has the constitutional right to alter the sentence of a prisoner. Remission means that the sentence was terminated at the time it was offered. An analogy to this is that when a divorce is declared between the two married couples, that's where it ends. Zuma's sentence ended when the President gave him a Remission but the conviction was not scrapped meaning that people can still refer to him as a criminal because of his conviction. Conviction and a sentence have separate meanings hence a person is convicted and later sentenced based on their pleading. Zuma's sentence was remitted there his correct sentence is 3 months.
