I wouldn't make it a habit, the new vacuum cleaners are made so cheaply with a tiny oil drop of a motor that either it will trip a breaker in the vacuum or burn out the motor The old vacuums had a real motor in them that was meant to cyclone the dirt out of carpet and is consistent to try and pull up the clog. These new ones take not very long to get caught and stay stuck which can eventually burn out the motor if left on withon 30 seconds.
