Pain and Gain of Russian Rhythmic Gymnasts

Rhythmic gymnastics competitions are a huge favorite among sports enthusiasts. The discipline originated in Russia, and this country continues setting the bar for excellence and creativity. Russian rhythmic gymnasts have gained quite an amount of fame worldwide because of the famous legendary coach Irina Viner Usmanova. She is said to have had a revolutionary impact on the lives of the many famous athletes she has trained. She is well known for creating routines for them that have wowed international judges.
Irina Viner’s love for children and her strict discipline combine perfectly to elicit outstanding results from her gymnasts. It has been said that she strives to find an individual approach to each of her athletes and to figure out the best way to motivate them personally. Those who have worked with her call her ‘a coach sent from God’.
A gymnast’s career is typically over by the time she turns 21-22 years old. However, if she wants to become outstanding, she must put her whole life on hold until then. The grueling training schedule leaves the athletes no time for normal teenage activities. They have to adhere to a strict diet and every gymnast is given a personal weight limit, which she must not exceed. Even as little 300 grams can keep her from performing at her peak because it places unnecessary pressure on the bones.
Alina Kabayeva, 2004 Rythmic Gymnastic Olympic Champion, looks back at her experience and tells how when she first started she was required to lose 3 kg in three days. She was determined to prove herself and went on a total fast, only having water. Alina remembers a number of young girls who had the talent and the skills that would have taken them to the Olympics, but they gave up before making it that far. It was her love for the art that kept her going. Many of the girls who struggle to control their weight, usually have a problem with saying no to sweets. One girl describes candy as her true love.
It takes a lot of stamina and resilience to stay on top of their game; and often, hard work can take an athlete much further than natural talent can.
Margarita Mamun, 7 Times Rhythmic Gymnastics World Champion, reminisces on the many times she had to perform through the pain because there was no other way. She has been known to practice for up to 9 hours nonstop when preparing for a championship.
Nowadays Alina organizes rhythmic gymnastics festivals. These are occasions for young children who enjoy this sport to showcase their talents. Athletic ability is not a prerequisite for taking part in the event, though. However, it’s a wonderful way for young hopefuls to get noticed and they have the potential to kick-start a child’s career.

  • Everybody is fussing over their weight but that's the reality of sports. These girls have to jump several feet above the ground and hold their whole weight on their toes while turning 3-4 times. They HAVE to be light to minimise the otherwise severe impact on their feet and ankles. Not to mention, they are athletes, they might burn over 6,000 calories per day on training alone, losing weight isn't as insane for them as it is for us mere mortals.

    • That's bullshit peddled by the pedophiles of the sport who are disgusted by the female form post-puberty. They said the same thing about artistic gymnastics back in the 90s. "Oh, these girls HAVE to be 65lbs! If they weight more than that they can't do the stuff they are doing!" and now we know that was just bullshit. They just liked cutesy little children, had nothing to do with their abilities. All the successful modern artistic gymnastics are post-pubescent.They are short in stature, but they are post-pubescent.

    • Vibrating Cat You said it yourself: Artistic Gymnastics. That is worlds apart from Rhythmics and it's not like Artistic gymnasts are thick, in fact they have little to no fat in them, they just have massive muscles because the new elements have nearly deformed their bodies. Rhythmic gymnasts have no need of those muscles because in the end they don't make you jump much higher anyway. Artistic gymnasts get their heights on the impulse gained from the running and the tumbling, things that aren't allowed in Rhythmics (and frankly I doubt any Rhythmic Gymnasts would even want to look like them)

    • Agreed that a long/lean body more like Nastia Liukin is better for Rhythmic. But the starving is 100% unnecessary. A girl who is 5'5" and 115 does not need to lose 10lbs! It's the pedos that want her to lose her breasts and hips, has nothing to do with helping her abilities.

    • While I disagree with the whole Pedo thing, I also disagree with the weight thing. I know so many dancers who go to Nuvo and Rainbow competitions who have a bit of chub and can still do the same exact turns and jumps without a problem. 5 pounds isn't gonna kill her, although it might throw her off her game until she gets used to it. Only /one egg and a piece of meat/ while exercising as much as she does can though, and it can totally mess up her bone and joint strength too.

    • You misunderstood what she said. That is exactly what she complained about - that it USED to be both, but now they removed the athletic part of it and all that's remained are the little twirles and dances. That is why they are removing it from the Olympics - because it does not count as a sport any more. It's like cheerleading or something.

  • But what they say about the weight is true. For athletes each of them have a weight limit. For us non athlete people, we too have our own weight limit. I've experienced being slightly obese before and because of it, it complicated my knees. It hurts when I jog, It hurts when I climb up the stairs and it hurts more when going down the stairs. My knees also hurts when I walk too long. There is a limit on how much weight our knees can support our body. And in relation to the RG Gymnast, since they constantly jump, do pirouettes, if they are over their weight limit, they can injure their legs, feet, knees much more serious compared if they are within their weight limit. I learnt my lesson and thank god I realized it sooner and were able to change. Now my knees hurt no more since I started to lose weight years back. :) But because previously I have exhausted my knees back when I was slightly obese, the pain will sometimes come back.

    • That's true, but making your athletes starve and lose muscle mass in the process will only exaggerate the problem. A lot of russian athletes especially in rhythmic gymnastics and figure skating realm have such young "expiration dates" because their training doesn't emphasize longevity and rely on girls weighing so little to be able to execute hard routines. But girls grow and as biology would have it, girls tend to retain fat in areas that are the most detrimental to flexibility and endurance. Instead of making the girls starve, their trainers should focus on building supporting muscles and strengthening tendons and bones, otherwise, their girls (esp in figure skating) will keep succumbing to their injuries before they reach 18 years of age

    • @@cat5902it IS a body image issue. Girls that look like boys because of their muscle mass are not desirable in gymnastics, but perform better, have less injuries and are happier. I'm in western Europe and we have awesome athletes that look strong. No need to watch weight, it's performance that counts. These girls don't have to watch what they eat, their muscle mass burns everything off, they have to actually pay attention that they are feeding those muscles adequately. Also don't forget, muscle supports joints. I learned after hurting my ankle, muscle training lifts pressure from joints and unloads ligament strain. I was at my skinniest when I hurt my ankle, and trained it up to become stronger, I now weigh significantly more, all muscle weight, actually lost fat. Educate yourself. Feel your body. Become stong.

    • @@cat5902 we're not animals, but also: our german shepherd has hip issues and has never been overweight. Some animals are more suseptible, some people have weak joints. My dad has weighed 110 kilos or more all his adult life and has never had any joint issues, despite long days of hard manual labour. A couple kilos really doesn't matter to your joints, quite the opposite. Gain ten kilos in muscle and better nutrition and your joints will be so much stronger. A proper warm up and knowledge when training is what these athletes also lack imo. The way these coaches claim they just need to lose some weight, while praising the girls looks is disgusting. It should be purely about performance and not about a pretty face or body at all. Body image shouldn't matter. But they make it so. And they weaken their athletes by demanding a certain look. Sick.

    • They will likely put her on a water fast. Kabaeva fasted for three days at one point and returned “fit as a fiddle.” There’s a book titled The Miracle of Fasting by Paul & Patricia Bragg. There are a lot of videos about people who have healed their health with it, enhanced their athletic performance, etc. A coach does not say to do it for too long otherwise it would be counterproductive. There’s a big difference between fasting (temporary and beneficial if medically-cleared) and starving (not eating enough for too long or eating anything at all, which is not beneficial for anyone especially athletes who need extra strength/stamina/energy/power and mentally disordered people who take things too far and very weakened people). Thorough education and close-monitoring or supervision is key. In some cases, some girls just develop larger bone and muscle mass because of genetics, so not much can be done about that in a healthy way. A lot of ppl criticise Kramarenko’s physical aesthetic but she performs high difficulty very well, she hasn’t injured herself too much so far, and there’s nothing that can be done to change her shape in a safe healthy way anyway. The laws of physics are quite undefeatable. A person’s strength and shape need to be in proportion to the weight they carry. A lot of people cannot match those levels within themselves, so they get injured and drop out of sport.

    • In weight-dependent sports it's the composition that matters, not just the weight. Too often athletes try to lose too much weight too quickly, which ends up depleting muscle mass. This happens to boxers, judo players, gymnasts & ballet dancers all the time. You can have a 100-pound athlete who has a higher percentage of muscle mass than a 100-pound athlete with less muscle but more fat & water. Guess who will perform better? And you can have a 100-pound athlete who eats well & is not malnourished (ie, nutrient-dense food that supplies all necessary fats, carbs, protein, vitamins, minerals), or one who lives on coffee & cigarettes. Guess who will perform better? The problem with not drinking during workouts -- for any athlete -- is that dehydration negatively affects performance almost immediately. Whatever advantage you think you have by weighing 8 ounces less during a workout is greatly outweighed by the effects of dehydration. Drink the 8 ounces of water. Your body will thank you, & trust me, your performance will NOT suffer. Indeed, it will improve. So to quote some idiot on KZhead: Your comment was just stupid. But don't worry. You're in good company. There are coaches out there who are as stupid as you are.

  • Why are people tripping about their weight? What they’re doing is quite normal for athletes and sports who have weight classes. MMA fighters, boxers, wrestlers etc have it much worse when it comes to cutting weight or maintaining weight to compete at a certain weight class. It has always been this way. It does suck, but it’s only for weigh in’s

    @powderwigwoodenteethmf5037@powderwigwoodenteethmf50375 жыл бұрын
    • The whole thing with weight classes though is that the whole cutting down to meet a certain class is a strategy. So let's say that your natural weight (when you're not dieting hard but you are super fit because of training) puts you in the middle weight of a certain weight class range. This means that you'll be facing people in that weight class who might be heavier and stronger than you. However, if you cut down to fit the weight class below, you will be that heavier, stronger person. You can't compare that to rhythmic gymnastics, where this is not an issue. With rhythmic gymnastics it's about looking a certain way, and having certain 'lines', like in ballet. Ever notice how the RG girls look as thin as high fashion models? That's the same carryover from way back when artistic gymnasts were supposed to be sticks as well. Except we know now that sticks don't perform as well as people who get to properly fuel their bodies. That girl weighed 53 kg, which is the equivalent of 116 lbs. Her weight is not the problem. There's an old documentary from 1996 I think where Alina Kabaeva was 15 and they followed her around during training. She had a weigh-in and weighed 44kg which is 97lbs. She got yelled at because she was heavier than her peers at that class. All we saw her eat during a grueling day of training was watermelon. That's not how it should be.

    • @Powder Wig Wooden Teeth MF how ignorant can you be?? they dont drink water during practice so they dont „gain“ 300g of weight throughout the day. they need to be at their low weight for years. they can eat what they want later….as in after they retire. and loosing a few kg if you weigh over 100kg is vastly different from loosing even 1kg if you are 45kg or something and already underweight. and its not just about calorie deficit. if they are undereating (which they are), they lack nutrients. So besides their muscles having no energy their bones are weaker, thus break more easily. better have more muscle and thus some more weight and supporting the jumps that way instead of starving to loose 500g more. and they dont have weight classes, you just brought that in. they are living in „competition weight“, while you (which…who are you even to say whats normal or healthy??) are just doing that for a few days at a time and after you can eat as much junk as you want.

  • Awww....all sweet and bless their souls but lots of bullshits as well. Its not hardwork, but passion to the sport was the main ingredient. Tatinova eat whatever she wants but her weight is just fine. Its the coaches that telling the other girl lots of bullock about eating disorder that caused disorder to her psyche. Alina didnt train much but won a lot as she said. But her passion and love to the sport shine bright in her eyes. So, listen kids, dont starve yourself to death and definitely dont have to cry and suffer your heart and body to be achieve. Its focus! ^^

  • Losing 1.5kg is easy. Try having to lose 15-20 pounds like MMA fighters and wrestlers do all the time before they go weigh in

    @powderwigwoodenteethmf5037@powderwigwoodenteethmf50375 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah, but they don't have to maintain that 20 lb loss indefinitely. Once they make weight and the fight is done, they don't maintain their fighting weight.

      @MissLilRedRooster@MissLilRedRooster5 жыл бұрын
    • Do you realize how little these girls already weigh? They hardly have ANY body fat. They also don't consume water during training so they aren't carrying excess water weight. Losing 1,5 kg is pretty much as much as 20 pounds are to the MMA fighters, who lose WATER weight by saunas and temporary dehydration, and quickly gain it back right after weigh in.

    • That’s the reality of being an professional athlete and amateur athlete. All athletes who competes in a sport, where weight classes exists, do this type of stuff. I know because I did the same thing before when I was a power lifter. I would lose 15 pounds in 2 days before weighing in to compete a lower weight class. It was mostly body water and some fat, but it took a toll on my body to the point of dehydration where I had to go to the hospital to get IV fluids in my body before some of my organs shut down. It’s the price many athletes paid to become the best. You see those MMA fighters, wrestlers, boxers etc on tv, but most people have no idea what these athletes have to put theirselves through to compete
