The wide receiver conversation has dominated the discourse around the Buffalo Bills for the entire offseason. After trading away Stefon Diggs and losing Gabe Davis in free agency, the most meaningful moves made by general manager Brandon Beane has been signing Curtis Samuel and drafting Keon Coleman. Is this enough? On today’s, Joe Marino explores that very topic. The show is focused on the Buffalo Bills, NFL Draft, 2024 NFL Draft, Brandon Beane, Josh Allen, Sean McDermott, Joe Brady, Bobby Babich, Keon Coleman, Curtis Samuel, Mack Hollins, Khalil Shakir, Dalton Kincaid, James Cook, Dawson Knox, Stefon Diggs, Gabe Davis, Tyler Boyd, Hunter Renfrow, Quintez Cephus, DJ Chark, Michael Gallop, Odell Beckham and more!

  • Given the cap situation and the draft pick situation this year, I felt replacing Diggs and Davis was a two year process. Not to mention they had other roster spots to fill. I believe Coleman will be an upgrade over Davis. Next year with their abundance of picks, they'll let Miller go, draft a WR1 and get a DE. I'm curious to see this team in 2024. They don't have Davis, who had 0 catches in 5 different games last year, and they don't have Diggs and his precipitous drop off in production in the 2nd half. They may run the ball a little more but Kincaid, Shakir, Samuel, and Coleman should be fairly good too.

  • I do NOT BELIEVE that Josh Allen said he "wanted Keon Coleman above ALL receivers." I just don't. Full stop. !!! Josh is a smart guy and there is NO WAY he would have said "I want Keon Coleman AND NOT Marvin Harrison Jr., Rome Odunze, or Malik Nabers" (and maybe even Brian Thomas Jr.). What I could believe, however, is that Brandon Beane told Josh that the top 3 guys (Harrison, Odunze, and Nabers) are completely off the table because we will NOT spend the amount of draft capital it would take this year (AND NEXT YEAR) to go get one of them, PLUS we have lots of holes to fill and a tight salary cap during this transition to a younger, cheaper team ... and we need as many inexpensive drafted players as we can get, so that's another reason why we will NOT me making a big move to trade up. Given that scenario, IF Brian Thomas falls into our lap at #28, that's who we'll be taking UNLESS you tell me you are strongly opposed to playing with him and why (which Josh would never do). Given those PRELIMINARY GROUND RULES, I can THEN see Beane asking Josh Allen somethomg along the lines of "given what I've outlined about the team constraints and needs and who will likely be available, WHO IS YOUR TOP RECEIVER that YOU WANT [among all the receivers available after the first 4] ???" THAT is what I believe was the likely predicate that first happened BEFORE Josh would have said "I want Coleman." I say this as NO disrespect to Coleman ... but let's be real !!!

  • There is a lot to be learned about fans from this pick. The flip floping I have seen in the comment sections on the internet is unreal. When Coleman got picked at 33 the hate was to a level I have rarely seen. Beane was public enemy #1. Coleman has a press conference where he hits it out of the park and comes off very likable. The comments did a 180 and people where literary saying he is going to go to the hall of fame. All of this before the guy has played a snap in the nfl. I'm not saying that these were the exact same people, but the court of public opinion tends to gain momentum very quickly. To me, this should be embarrassing. This same type thing almost got McDermott fired last season. A whole lot of people thinking with their emotions and not there brains. Man, just relax and let things play out a little bit. • I too, ...was hoping for Legette. But!!! I have convinced myself that Coleman really is a stud in the making. Here it goes: The more I see of him the more I like. There definitely is not a WR in this draft class with better body-control or catching ability, period. Kid is a freak-athlete type of build. I think they actually hit on this pick. A 4.6 40 time isn't blazing, but his game tape speed passes the eye test, and he is definitely no sluggard. He can stretch the field. He is also very raw in development, and young, so he has quite the ceiling if he puts his mind to it. Besides separation complaints and route limitations (rawness), I don't see a single weakness in the rest of his profile. So, ...if he can develop a bit, Buffalo struck gold. And if not, well, at least Beane can blame Josh if TSHTF, lol.

If Coleman was indeed the guy and Allen told Beane that, why do you risk trading back twice with two teams that clearly wanted a WR?? • The optimism for this receivers group reminds me of the optimism for hardy and the other guy whose name I have forgotten already. They contributed virtually nothing. Some were optimistic that Gabe Davis would be a good #2 receiver and he pulled his usual disappearing act for half the season. MAYBE Coleman had a great rookie season and plays like a WR 1 or 2, but he did a 2nd half disappearing act in his last year in college similar to Diggs and Davis with the bills.. MAYBE Samuel breaks his best year of 800 yds. MAYBE Shakir plays like he did in the second half of last season without a superstar (maybe more on reputation than on actual ability last year) wr like Diggs drawing a ton of attention. Way too many maybes to think the Bills are good at WR. I like Coleman, but I doubt he's ready to be a #1 or even #2 wr as a rookie. Samuel and Shakir are good slot receivers, they are not #1 or #2 wr. They needed a #2 last year and when they struggled with the passing game it was painfully obvious. It was painfully obvious in the KC game. Now realistically they need a 1 and 2. This is probably the slowest wr group in the league. You have a QB with a cannon arm but nobody who is good at going deep? That's freaking crazy imo. They already have been asking Allen to do everything, now they don't even give him an established superstar wr or even a guy who can stretch defenses. This is yet another failure of beane to provide Allen with quality wr's and we are in year 7? Unbelievable. Name me a wr group that is worse than the Bills - you can't do it with a straight face.

Keon has freak-athlete ability, for sure, and there is not a better WR in the class at catching the ball, period. I have to say, even before the Bills drafted Keon, I think Beane may have made the biggest move of all in signing WR's Curtis Samuel and Mack Hollins. Both are underrated, solid, reliable veterans, and Samuel and Hollins arguably replaced Diggs and Davis at a much reduced price tag (minus the 30mil Diggs stole, lol). My point being, I think Samuel (who I have always loved) and Hollins (to a lesser extent) will make a huge impact this year with a much better QB at the helm. Samuel is great for short/intermediate, and Hollins is a versatile big-framed savvy receiver and an excellent red-zone target for Josh. Add in Keon and James Cook, Shakir and our TE's and, yeah, ....we may actually be set at wideout (for now). I can certainly see Josh getting to the playoffs with this group. • Joe, I agree with you 100% that Keon Coleman is a BETTER receiver prospect that Gabe Davis ("just outside" Round 1 as the top pick of the 2nd Round, I would hope and expect that he would be a better prospect than 4th Round Gabe Davis) ... and that he's the perfect replacement for Gabe Davis (especially on sideline and endzone "jump ball" routes); indeed, Gabe used to infuriate me because MOST (not "all," but certainly most) of the times when Allen would throw an interception WHILE throwing to Gabe Davis, the pick WAS GABE'S FAULT: Gabe CHRONICALLY FAILED to "protect the pass route/throw" by doing at least one of these three things: 1. He would FAIL to use his body to "box out" the defender and shield the incoming ball from a defensive play. Had he done so, at a minimum those interceptions/costly drive killing turnovers would NOT have occurred ... AND 80%-90% of the time he also would have DRAWN a DEFENSIVE PASS INTERFERENCE PENALTY because the derfender would have had to go through Gabe's body to attempt to make a play on the ball. But Gabe lazily didn't position himself to protect the QB's throw, and he thereby allowed the DBs to cut in front and either tip up or outright pick-off the pass; 2. On square-outs, dig routes, and even some drags across the middle, he would FAIL to come back towards the football to make the attempted catch -- which is another form of the above failure to use his body to shield the ball from the defender) -- which was especially maddening when he saw Josh was scrambling or in trouble. He would either just stand there or lazily drift away ... which, again, allowed the defender to undercut the route and make a successful defensive play on the ball (interception or knock-down); and/or 3. He would run the wrong route/not know what he was supposed to be doing ... which led to "busted playes" on offense and Josh trying to force the ball to where he thought Gabe was going to go. This is NOT to say Gabe Davis was a "terrible" receiver. He certainly had his great moments. But he was NOT reliable or trustworthy as a go-to #2 receiver. So here's my problem: IF we now have a "BETTER" replacement for Gabe Davis, that's GREAT ... BUT it STILL leaves the Bills WITHOUT a reliable, fast, "difference-making" WR #1 !!!!!!!!!! The Bills MUST find that person before the season, or I suspect the Bils will not win the division ... and without winning the division, the Bills will LIKELY NOT make the playoffs because our wild card qualifying record will NOT be "good enough" compared to other teams who have improved themselves greatly. NEXT YEAR we MUST get a #1 WR who can take the top off defenses and make them r4espect Josh Allen's deep ball instead of unilaterally surrendering that capability we're allowing to go unused.

  • I hope Joe sees this cause it took a reasonable amount of time, and I think it will put a lot of Bills fans' minds at ease. All the numbers I used are regular season and don't include the playoff games. I went through the production the Bills lost from players leaving and tried to figure out where it would go. Targets=T, Receptions=R: Diggs- T=160, R=107 ; Gabe Davis- T=81, R=45 ; Sherfield- T=22, R=11 ; Harty- T=21, T=15 ; Murray- T=22, R=17 ; Total- T=306, R=195 We added Coleman, Curtis Samuel, Hollins and Ray Davis. I'm projecting Coleman to replace Gabe's production, Hollins and Shorter to replace Sherfield and Harty's production. Ray Davis to replace Murray's production. Diggs I split between Samuel (50%), Shakir (18.75%), Kincaid (12.5%), Knox (12.5%) and Cook (6.25%). The percentages being the percentage of Diggs's T and R added to what they did in 2023, except for Samuel who had roughly 50% of Diggs's production level at Washington last year. The projected target share is as follows: (In brackets are how much they had last year) Kincaid: T=111 (91 in 2023), R=87 (73 in 2023) Coleman: T=81 , R=45 Shakir: T=75 (45), R=59 (39) Samuel: T=80 (91), R=53 (62) Cook: T=64 (54), R=50 (44) Knox: T=56 (36), R=36 (22) Hollins: T=21 (30), R=15 (18) Shorter: T=22, R=11 Ray Davis, T=22, R=17 I think this is a very realistic look at the target share for this team next year. It obviously won't work out exactly like this and some of the numbers can be shifted around, but for the most part this is probably what it will look like at the end of the season. I would hope Coleman can be at least as good and Gabe. It sucks losing Diggs, but as you can see we are able to replace his production with our guys. Knox would be back up to roughly what he had in 2022, Samuel would have roughly the same production he's had over the past several years, and you would have a slight increase for Shakir, Kincaid and Cook which I think is expected. During the draft I really wanted another receiver, and maybe we add a free agent, but there aren't that many available targets for another guy. He would primarily be an injury insurance.

  • Joe you were right, they should go get Terrance Marshall from CAROLINA

  • Diggs turned in to poison for JA. The trade of Diggs was more about Josh...not the "sure-handed" Stefon.

  • Tape doesn't lie. EVERY YEAR we're all told that, and that combine is fluff (even though his combine was excellent in everything but 40) and EVERY year fans ignore great tape and get obsessed with the wrong guys. Coleman and Samuel will outperform last seasons Davis and diggs.

    • I agree the tape *doesnt lie* - which is why I’m so confused as to why you think he’s going to outperform Diggs next szn 💀

    • @@topleftfromtime diggs last 10 games were pretty bad. Did you not watch the video? But time will tell. Keep the receipts

    • @topleftfromtime but assuming you weren't trolling have you actually watched Coleman tape?

  • I think amongst Hamler, Isabella, Shorter, KeeSean Johnson and Shiver, the front office thinks one can make a roster spot or a trade for someone like Cortland Sutton is in play. WR corp is lacking but I don’t think it’s as horrible as a lot of fans think. At least we’re not the Chargers

    • It's not lacking. They go 5 deep with quality options. Hamler is worth rostering if he can finally stay healthy. Hollins is a high end WR5 and ST ace. I think there's a decent chance they intend to trade for someone or sign another decent vet to round out the room, but maybe not.
