  • @Mercedes Benz - Thank you for your question. In Germany, displacement is always measured by 100 cc, which means as soon as you are over 6200 it counts as 6300; therefore, it is a 6.3 liter engine. The C 63 AMG has the AMG 6.3 liter V8 engine internally named the M156, while the SLS AMG has the AMG 6.3 liter V8 SLS engine internally named the M159.

  • I had the previous generation 6.2L and never got more than 300kms (200miles) per $105 of 94 octane. Traded in for 2012 E63 with this 5.5TT motor, and now averaging 550kms (345miles) per $105 of 94 octane. This is what they mean by thinking of the environment. This is one of the greatest, most reliable engines ever built. Hands down. Especially considering with a $1500 tune, you are at 700 ft/lbs of torque. The 4.4L BMW TT is NOT a better motor. Makes less power, is less efficient, less potential, and has far more problems.

It's even dangerous when you need fast accelerate from stand still position to enter the traffic and the engine lags.

It is possible to combine those two contrary worlds and to achieve this, which is what drives our performance here at AMG. As regulations for vehicles are becoming more and more focused on low emissions, we also have to develop new ways of improving our engines in that field.

    • ***** Its this thing called engine durability. Ever see a diesel engine with that short of a piston and piston skirts? Ever hear about what happened with the 3 rd generation hemi engines that ended up with that same profile of short piston because it was mandated to get enough stroke to get them out to the revered 426 cu in mark of the 2nd gen hemi ? They don't last. Ever heard of "side thrust" / "piston rock" or "skirt slap" ........ Or maybe the question for you should be: WHY bother with piston skirts at all ? Go ahead, take apart your engine, have the skirts machined clear off of the pistons, right up to the bottom of the ring stack, put the thing back together. take it for a drive.

    • ulisscarple Ok, I was just curious as you made a statement without supporting it. I'm pretty sure that the AMG division know what they are doing :) Anyway, As long as it last long enough during my ownership that is all that matters (it will be under warranty anyway)!

      @DaveAuld@DaveAuld9 жыл бұрын
    • ***** Yah, it seems like an established manufacturer would know what they are doing, to build a reliable durable product. Chevrolet built this car called the Vega. It was revolutionary. It had an aluminum block and a cast iron head. Typically an engine gets aluminum heads before an aluminum block. But don't worry GM knows what they are doing, they have been at it a long time. Its not possible for an established manufacturer to build something that won't hold up. Just ask a Vega owner ! Then there is the latest Apple Iphone, dont worry, Apple knows what they are doing. It only seems like it is bending.

  • how do you deal with the uneven exhaust pulses delivered to each turbo from the odd firing banks? i know bmw develeped a complex exhaust routing system that matches complementary pairs of cylinders on each bank, do you use something similar to this?

    @ajpaulsen2@ajpaulsen211 жыл бұрын
  • the engine has additional cam sensors that remember the exact last cylinder fired and the angle where the piston is. So the starter doesn't really do much except a nudge. As for oil pressure. It is the same as starting up a car regularly, except this time, oil is everywehre and everything is lubed, therefore it would NOT wear out the engine. It's not a dry start.

  • I find it rather astonishing that the technical content in this very appealing video is limited to the demonstration of: 1)direct injection, 2)turbocharger/intercooler, and 3)auto-start; the former two are 'Schnee von gestern' in the automotive industry thus the R&D that the components of this engine must have gone through is razor sharp.

  • 5:18 "A crankshaft sensor detects which cylinder is in the best position to be given ignition". What? That's basic function of a combustion engine and nothing unique to AMG. It's ignition timing - TDC top dead center = ignition (fire the spark plug).

    @MM0SDK@MM0SDK8 жыл бұрын
    • Its actually "to begin ignition." Makes much more sense that way

      @lilspank32@lilspank328 жыл бұрын
    • +Mark Bartlett You dummy....what ever cylinder is closest to fire next the firing order starts over beginning with that cylinder. Its just to make the engine start quicker after it shuts of at a stop light.

    • Isn't that what v tech is? Just variable valve timing?

      @GeorgeWBush-gh6oy@GeorgeWBush-gh6oy6 жыл бұрын
    • You do not fire the spark plug at TDC. It goes off a few degrees before TDC (Advanced timing) in general. To know what degree the engine is at, a crankshaft sensor like the man described is used.

      @michaelmilberger9013@michaelmilberger90136 жыл бұрын
    • George W. Bush VTEC and Variable Valve Timing (VVT) are two entirely different technologies. VTEC increases valve lift and duration after a certain RPM. VVT changes the mechanical camshaft phasing throughout the RPM range for both the intake and exhaust cams (one for each if DOHC)

The timing cam shaft (displaced from used to be (above valve and spring) to be above rocker valve) hits down on 2 to 1 ratio rocker (other end has spring as strong to keep valve tight closed) thus saving huge amounts of energy maybe... Ie half the energy if at 2 to 1 spring pressure.. Hope makes sense

    • We'll ALL be on hybrids/elec vehicles soon, and the sooner the better as far as I'm concerned. An elec motor is superb for vehicles, with 95%+ efficiencies, so work on great innovative ways to GENERATE clean power, not coal etc, and we'll have great transport systems. Though while they ALLOW Ships to use bunker fuels, the dirtiest fuels of world, cars being clean will do ZERO. 1 ship outputs as much pollution as 15-20 MILLION Cars, and they have orders for 2,500 SHIPS of that size to build. They can EASILY clean the output pollution using similar techniques to factories onshore, but they are VERY Rich corps and owners of countries so why should they, unless they are MADE TO!
