The guitar is great. And the drums sound so simple, but they're so talented. I love it when you listen to a song, and you can tell it's from the 90s, 80s, or 70s just based on the sound.
1am or so on a lovely summer weekend in the 80's, my best friend & her husband went to the local dam with hubby & I. We were all in our 20's back then. Hubby driving down the small lane beside the river, Richard in the other front seat, girls in the back heading to the dam. We had the windows rolled down & Black Betty came on the radio. We blasted that song. Richard (friends' husband) started playing spoons on his leg to this song. Later on we all danced at the dam.... but the memory has lasted all these years. Today Richard died. I had to play this in his honor. God Speed Richard.
Rest in peace

@@debbygordon1432 I was just listening to a program with the comedian behind the robot skeleton Geoff on Craig Ferguson's Late, Late Show. He was talking about how when he used to do stand up comedy, he'd do these impressions of the people he grew up with in a poor section of Cleveland, his neighbors, people he saw all the time and interacted with. He told stories and put on the different personalities and voices, and he wasn't making fun of anyone; indeed, he was depicting "home," people he cherished. He said sometimes blacks would come up to him and say how perfectly well he was able to capture the way things were where he was from. BUT, these days? I'm just paraphrasing here, but he said it was different, how the things he said then could now be called "racist." You simply weren't allowed to say certain things anymore. Yes, being outside in someone's yard just hanging out was recognizeable, and those clothes - love the bell bottoms and tube tops! But hearing the song now, after just listening to that comedian, what struck me was how free and spontaneous those people all appeared. The song Black Betty is much more than a tune. It is one of the working songs used by the Gandy Dancers. That is the name used for rail road workers who worked on the tracks. Singing the song while they worked allowed for the men to work in unison and move heavy objects with great precision. To me this is one of the great gifts from Black History.
It was first recorded in 1933 by James "Iron Head" Baker, who was part of a chain gang in a Texas prison. Definitely started out as a work song, Boss!
