In this video I take on number 10 of Britain’s Top 100 Walks. The Great Ridge to Mam Tor is a favourite hike for many and I start at the other end of the ridge, complete the hike and then follow up with a bit of a pub crawl in Edale and some relaxed camping. I hope you enjoy.

  • I did Edale to Mam Tor to Hope 2 weeks ago so similar but reverse. Weather was definitely better for you. I stayed in the Field Head Campsite you tried to get into but pre-booked with Charlie and Cassie (the owners) a couple of days in advance. My journey back to Basingstoke was a bit longer than yours to Sheffield. Amazing place the Peaks. We Southerners miss out. Thanks for all you do for us Hikers and Wild campers. Keeping it real

    • Back in the good old days before covid knackered everything, It was a fiver for a tent or six quid in a van. New owners put a load of naff shabby chic signs all over the place, added online booking at tripled the price. It works for them, I suppose. Been a few years since I camped in Edale. It's just an expensive carpark nowadays.

  • Really enjoyed this one Paul - back in what the Welsh call their Hiraeth! ( I was brought up for my first few years in Chapel en le Frith) I was intrigued by the workers walking from Castleton via Hollins pass to the mill in Edale - as a small child my Gran lived in the farm at the top of the Winnats pass and walked to and from school each day in Castleton! it was early 20th century - they don't make them hardy like that any more! good luck with your next trip out!

  • Stink test experiment: please test...wash your hiking clothes (t-shirts, pants, socks underwear, hats scarfs etc whatever you shall be wearing, including shoes). Once done re soke everything in a large sink, bath etc in warm water which contains a good amount of baking soda for at least 30 min. Rinse. Spin in a washing machine, and leave to dry or use tumble dryer until dry. Before you go hiking put your feet in a small tub of water containing baking powder... And also put some baking powder under your arm pits etc. after some time say 10 min..dry your self etc...the idea is that baking powder is a natural germ killer and deodoriser. If there is no bacteria present on your clothes and self you should not stink.. at least not to quickly.. then go on your hike... Please test for how much longer you stay stink free.. thanks a fan from the tiny island of Malta

Farms seemingly every other field, blocked off with stone walls and very little cover for stealth camping, I always felt that someone had eyes on me.
