I've got this rusty old hand vise at the flea market for next to nothing.
It's got welding marks, hammer marks and a maker's mark I could not find any info on, so I felt no regrets welding a base to it so it can stay upright on the workbench.
I used a round offcut from a plasma cutter for this and this shape allows me to clamp it to the edge of the workbench and rotate it to the best angle suited for the work I'm doing. Kind of like a basic rotating base vise.

  • It's a hand vise meant and formed to be held in the hand and not welded to a base. Give it to someone who can cut it off that base and save it.

    @ronmartinmhg2804@ronmartinmhg28046 жыл бұрын
    • ron martin Mhg you'll still find limited use for it. Standing it on its end won't make it more useful as it's the same as putting it end down in a vice. Which is basically what he did by clamping it to the table so his work was basically pointless!

  • nice work, what you have made could be a very useful tool for many people, I have a few hand vise and often see these around, I will almost certainly copy your project.................your welding skills are obviously in development, once you begin to master the arc welder you will most certainly see the aesthetic difference, not to mention the actual effectiveness of the bond between a finely laid arc weld and that birdshit (as its known ) that you melted on to that metal, please take some time to watch some instructions...try You tube, you will not regret it, I look forward to seeing a better example on one of your future projects, keep creating

    • I´ve got jus exactly the same vise, but in good condition... I agree with you, they´re great hand vises. But his idea is also interesting: a stand alone vise... I would have drilled/taped some kind of bolt near the hinge, in order to support it when I need a standa vise, o remove it when I need a hand one, instead of welding it to the base... Anyhow, this is just another idea... and last but not least it is his vise after all, he can do whatever he wants with it!!! regards

  • Wonderful job and super vid, as always. Lovely to see something like this brought back to life. The bolt was bent for a reason of course. I suppose a wooden version of this would be quite possible? Thanks for sharing mate!

    @MarkMcCluney@MarkMcCluney6 жыл бұрын
    • Thanks Mark! The bolt was bent the right way, to allow opening, but it was also bent sideways, twisted a little and also had lots of hammer marks on it. I think some previous owner welded the bolt in place then realized it can't open the vise and tried hammering it into the right shape. But he failed and the weld broke.

  • Good Job !!, When and for what reason did you buy your new Makita angle grinder? did your old machine go wrong?

    @johnny-s40@johnny-s406 жыл бұрын
    • It was a birthday gift from my sister. It's pretty cheap, around $50, and it's made in my country. The red black and decker is almost 15 years old and works fine, it's only problem was with the switch a few years ago, but I fixed it. It was originally my father's grinder. What I don't like about it is that it uses smaller disks, 4 1/2 (115 mm) which are not as practical as 5 inch (125 mm) ones, like the makita uses. So I use the makita with a cutting wheel on and have a grinding or sanding disk on the B&D.

      @TheSmallWorkshop@TheSmallWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
    • I also had a b&d angle grinder. Unfortunately it went wrong after 3.5 years. Then I bought the same Makita as you have, because I read many reviews saying it was good!!
