Georgia cracks down on demonstrations over 'foreign agents bill'

2024 ж. 1 Мам.

EU and US officials have called on Georgia to scrap a controversial new bill, which - according to its critics - would put an end to free speech, and prevent accession to the EU.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
The so-called 'foreign agents bill' - which mirrors legislation passed in Russia - has brought tens of thousands of pro-Western demonstrators to the streets of Tbilisi, where they've been met by an increasingly violent police response. It's left the country at a crossroads between Western integration, and the influence of the Kremlin.
And a warning there are some scenes of violence in this piece.

  • In the USA there is the "Patriot Act", a law that was passed after the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. The EU has passed similar laws. In Germany, a corresponding paragraph has even been expanded in the criminal code. Georgia (also known as the old Grusinia) now has a similar law to limit and control the influence of Western NGOs and their funding. In this way, the government wants to prevent Georgia from being destabilized by foreign parties from inside and outside, with the help of NGOs. The demonstrators are afraid of losing their sources of income. Back in 2014, Kyiv, the Maidan. The demonstrators were financially supported by the EU, the USA and their NGOs. What then happened to Ukraine has been very clear since 2014

This bill is simply being passed so Russia gain easier access into the Georgian media to infiltrate Georgia further away from the EU and its democracy. NATO countries have laws like this, you only need to look at the USA, which has had the FARA law approved since 1930, let me write it down again 1930. Their operations won't be hindered, it's just a matter of completing some paperwork annually. Remember, "agent" doesn't imply espionage, it simply denotes a representative acting on behalf of another, which is an appropriate label if a significant portion of your income comes from elsewhere.

However I walked round the city, saw the sights, took taxis and tours with no problems. • Context is VERY important here. We have a pro Russian government whose leader literally called the whole west "number one war and destruction wagers", blaming them stirring Georgian politics from the shadows since 2004. He promised this law will serve as one of the many tools to keep us "safe" from the West. He promised how he will be even stricter in the future. They are blocking our long lasted, slow and painful crawl towards EU. This is why 100000+ children, teenagers, adults and elders have been standing outside all day every day for the last 3 weeks. We want freedom. We want Europe. We want NOTHING Russian.

Similar practices like in 1967 in Greece, where they helped the military junta to gain power, imprison all politicians(even the conservative ones), tortured and killed people(students in 1973 demonstrated in Athens Polytechnic against the junta. The junta responded by sending army and tanks! , the tank broke in the main entrance driving over students to dead bodies,polic3 snipers were killing anyone they saw as "young with long hair" ...
