BOXING WORLD WEEKLY and DiBella Entertainment presents:
On August 18th, 2002, two-division champion James "Lights Out" Toney took on Jason Robinson in an IBF Cruiserweight title eliminator.
Toney was chasing after three divisions. On the other hand, Robinson was looking to continue his win streak and skyrocket his name into households all over the world.
Could Toney turn Robinson's lights out? Or would Robinson be the one to flip the switch?

    • I recall the fights toney had with Mike McCollum, masterful boxing IQ, ring general ship, against an awesome fighter... he was at his best at middle or super middle weight imo... I'm sorry to see his mental faculty has declined though... he is legendary middle weight going all the way to the heavy weight... incredible

    • @@anthonynocera3846 that one is better. It makes more sense. He doesn’t really apply pressure like Marciano and Frazier did, instead, he baits and draws his opponent. He kind of sets traps and waits. He does apply pressure sometimes though.

    • Fine tuning. If you arent on that world championship level, 99% of the time the guy who is will take you out in the fine margins. Its not a game of inches, its a game of millimetres.

  • I remember this fight because Toney used the same trap and overhand left that he used to KO Mike Nunn. Toney and Duran were two guys who would pressure the hell out of you WHILE being nearly untouchable at their best. Floyd had moments when he would do it but these guys made careers out of going after guys and beating them up while hardly getting touched.

    • @@tomasdipietro794 Yeah this guy was a phenom. But also a true student of the game, and the history. It is crazy to think, if he didn't enjoy eating so much, and was more humble in his 20's. You probably know, he didn't like training, (running, exercises, etc). He mostly sparred, to keep in shape. He probably has the most sparring time of any boxer, lol.

  • Didn’t really appreciate JT back then as RJ stole his shine for me, but 20 plus years later I can really appreciate the fighter he was. He is now one of my favourite fighter to pull out of the archives to watch and admire his skill.

  • The sneaky right hand by toney before the knockout left hook was the set up. When he threw the right hand he had to sneak it which threw him off balance. Toney in control the whole fight. Toney in my top 5 greatest fighters ever!

    • @@PancakeDiaries Exactly, 23:59. The announcers were dead wrong. Because Robinson didn't touch Toney in that exchange. That was a clean right shot by JT, and it stunned Robinson. JT then went in for the kill later.

  • What a knockout. Jeez. One of my favourite fighters of all time….he could definitely talk the talk and walk the walk. What an example of combination punching ending with a murderous left hook to end matters. Lights out was the absolute real deal. Miss great fighters like this…:bygone era now, Toney, McClellan, Hopkins, Jones to name a few.

  • At the end, James Toney’s experience came in but Jason Robinson did really good. I think he should’ve capitalized more power on his straight lefts and I think he could’ve caught Tony a few times

    • The real nightmare, not just agressive defense, he can sit in the pocket, feet on his opponents centerline, an rip counters all day. He is impossible to hurt Even though he is slow footed, you cant keep him off you. If uou mabage to do that, it's because he let's you. It's a trap, especially when his back on the ropes.

  • Once toney finds the range on his left snap jab it sets up his roll into that philly shell which then leads to the counter hooks. Love his style.. alot of judges score him wrong because they dont see the beauty thats taking place.

  • Toney was a maestro at switching from orthodox to southpaw and this punch was the exact one he KO'ed Michael Nunn with. Who was brilliant at switch hitting too was Mike Tyson. He did it against both Trevor Berbick and Pinklon Thomas
