Ding Liren defeats Gukesh D's Italian Game

Featured is the sharp chess game between Gukesh D and Ding Liren from the 2024 Tata Steel Masters. The opening is an Italian Game, Giuoco Piano. It's instructive to see how exactly Ding Liren handles Gukesh's dark-squared bishop and its pin on Black's king knight. After Gukesh advances in the center with d4, Ding Liren responds with an excellent sequence that carves out a significant weakness on White's queenside, which a knight can then exploit.

  • Ding is such a monster in these kinds of slow maneuvering games. To find a winning path is hard enough in a game like this, but to do it without even an inaccuracy is mind boggling. It may not be flashy, but it's precise.

  • By far the best game analyses here in YT -- I feel like I understand chess! ;) Really, keep up the great work --- and don't change your unique style, it's a gem. Enjoying the strategic ideas from the opening, but above all the calm, dialogical way to explain the positions with no eval bar and just a little amount of SF only when needed. Refreshing!

  • The position after Nxc7 and Kf8, Stockfish 16 at a depth of 24 evaluates at -2.5. Personally over the board, I would feel I was losing in this position. Open f file for a rook to occupy, pressure on the f7 point by LSB and the queen, potentially losing the rook on a8.

    • Its not that. Since Gukesh is still a very young player, there isn't many games where he has won against top players such as Ding, of course it will change with time. So Jerry analyzing their past encounters for WCC preview, we find more games where Ding won rather than the other way around.

      @FahimHoq@FahimHoq19 күн бұрын
    • @@FahimHoq Although, I do I think there is a prevalent opinion among chess fans that Ding has lost a step since the WC and may even be an underdog vs the hot Gukesh. I think these last two vids by Jerry do a fantastic job of reminding people just how dangerous Ding still is. This game being from this year is especially impressive.

    • @stoutlager6325 I agree. I love the fact that Jerry covered these games. I meant the sample size is small as its only 2 games, so we can't tell who is supposed to be the favorite in WCC later this year.

      @FahimHoq@FahimHoq18 күн бұрын
    • @josephulmer5208 I have also seen comments where people underestimated Gukesh as well. Ding is a fantastic player, no doubt, I think he will be back to his best, as defending world title is a massive motivation. However, we saw in the candidate that Gukesh has improved a lot in a short space of time. He looks much stronger compared to even last year. In the Candidates, he managed to hold his own against the likes of Fabi, Nepo, Hikaru, etc. Had those player were challenging Ding, no one would have doubted their strengths. So if Gukesh can win a tournament with them in there, then I believe Gukesh is also capable of challenging even peak form Ding Liren.
