Perry Como may have been a clean-living, straight-laced crooner, but it doesn't mean his life was always as peaceful as his music. Despite a marriage that lasted until death did them part, and a career that earned his family riches that would extend wealth down multiple generations, Como experienced some tragedies in life that would break a more fragile person. From the loss of someone close to him, to career setbacks that could have ended his career, Como managed to stay the course and keep singing until the very end. From a career that began before the second World War, to a life that ended in the new millennium, here are tragic details about Perry Como.

What is your favorite song by Perry Como?
If I HAVE to choose only one, I guess “Magic Moments”… but I equally love most of his songs, another that comes to mind as being my most favorite apart from that one would be “Catch a falling star”
My favourite is ‘I’m Just A Prisoner Of Love,’ but they are all great,
Catch A Falling Star and Papa Loves Mambo.
Perry Como was my mother”s most favourite crooner over Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra & any other in Yankee land. The Perry Show on TV was her most favourite show.
‘It’s Impossible’.
Perry was one of my favorite singers. You could tell he was genuinely a good man. He had the most wonderful Christmas Specials.
Who didn’t love perry. He was the perfect man they say he was shy. But he handled the audiences like a pro. One great hit after another. I liked the ballads.
perry was such a great singer and had a lot of special songs. i used to like watching his tv show with my folks back in the 50's and early 60's. i would also watch his christmas tv specials, even now you can catch them on nostalgia tv or youtube. my mother had many of his records and christmas records. love mr. c.
He was my favorite crooner. I was raised by my grandparents and they were very big fans of his.
I was born in 45 and I distinctly remember hearing songs of his on the radio. The common person liked him, because he seemed like a nice guy.
Not justA great singer but a good hearted person.
Nice quote from Perry : “The things that money can buy I now have but the things that money can’t buy I have always had”.
How true, and great philosophy!
Love his voice. He was a class act. What a voice. Rest peacefully, my friend. ❤️🕊️🙏
Total class act, and a good man.
It wouldn't be Christmas without a selection of his beautiful songs. What a wonderful human being and beautiful in every way. 😇🎄☃️
So very true! Well-said.
I absolutely loved (and still do) Perry Como! Loved every song he ever sang.
Perry Como was my Godfather. He was always at Sunday mass and would sometimes sing.We have a photo of him standing next to our church on a sunny day.
Wow...that would have been something! My parents preferred him over Bing...and I suppose that's why I do too😄
I was just a kid when he was on TV, but, I loved watching him. Very gentle, classy man with a voice like milk and honey. He always seemed so natural and real!!
@@believeinjesus8862 Mom was a musician with perfect pitch. Couldn't stand Sinatra because she said he slid off and onto the note. She felt the 4 best voices of the crooners were Bing, Perry, Andy, and Nat. Of course, she always pointed out that he was such a good Catholic.

You were blessed.
Perry Como was a gentleman first, a hard worker, and a soothing singer. I always felt that he wasn’t acting - what we saw was the real person. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying
Perry Como was the 7th son of a 7th son, a sign of good luck in Italian families.
Are you sure all six of Perry's older siblings were ALL BOYS?!
My favorite singer of all time and most humble and underrated soul 💖 not a day goes by that I don’t listen to his music
One of my late grandmothers favorite singers. I remember her record collection of Andy Williams Perry Como all of those guys
We loved the Perry Como show in the 1960's . Great fun.
The weekly Perry Como was tremendously popular in Germany where I was growing up in the 50‘s and 60‘s. You could always find us glued to the TV set when his show was on! Such great memories!
I loved Perry Como... one of the great American balladeers.... what a tone, what style!
A voice as smooth as shaving cream., wonderful & gentle demeanor.
I was a just a little girl watching the Perry Como show on TV. I loved him. My mother told me that I used to hug the TV when he was singing. I guess I was trying to give him a hug !
I loved his song, "And I love you so." To me, it is a touching song reserved for one that loved another. He was the sexiest and most delightful singer that ever lived. He learned the value of family and hard work. What is interesting he loved his wife who was his very best friend.
He may have been laid back but the style of singing was unique in his manners and I know as a big fan of his - I looked forward to hearing him sing his songs each Saturday on his TV Shows. I believe Dean Martin had a similar laid-back style of singing too which I loved him for it.
Mine ,too .Also , "For the Good Times " .
Como was definitely a class act, made it all look easy.He was easy on the ear and had plenty of hits.
He was the best in every way, he was a good living man, and a wonderful humble human being, with one of the best voices ever.I saw him way back in I think it was 1974 in Glasgow Scotland,Ive always been a Perry Como fan, band I’m so glad I was lucky to have saw him in real life.
He may have died in his bedroom chair but I know it was not alone for Especialy in that time he was surrounded by many hearts he held all over the world❤️❤️❤️so much!
He was a very nice man I hated that he suffered from Alzheimer's and died alone May God bless his soul rest in peace... And I love you so. One of my favorites of perry Como
One of the best voices of the crooners, closest to Bing. Far better than Sinatra. His early life was full of sacrifice, something people don't understand today. It wasn't a tragic life. It was a good life lived by a genuinely good man.
I Don't think He was better than frank Sinatra!! But was Equal!; They were All great!!!
You are so very right! What an excellent comment, you totally hit the nail on the head. -and yes, far better than Sinatra.
@@michealholm2900 Not just better. He was far better.
When I was 4 years old I loved Perry Como. When his TV show came on, during th 50s, I had to watch it. Apparently most of the little girls in my neighborhood always had to see Perry Como. My favourite song was "Catch a Falling Star", but later "Seattle" became a close second. I don't know what his appeal to little girls was, but he was handsome and could sing to us.
To this very day I -- We -- so many MISS Perry C., and among the best entertainers of His time. May God Bless.
Such a lovely voice and i love you so ripnever be another perri
Perry Como was one of my Dad's favorite singers. l remember seeing one of his records in my Dad's closet.
The best of the best, in every way best voice, and a wonderful good living man.
Wish there was a longer documentary on him but I thank you for the making this video , bravo 💞🙏
Agreed….I’d like a longer documentary on him, too.
Thanks for a great narration about the late great Perry Como. Loved him, his wonderful Christmas specials and his very smooth gentle way of singing, miss him! May he rest in peace~
I had a crush on Perry Como at 3 years old. Hot digity, Dog digity was my favorite song.
Perry Como was smooth with a beautiful voice, a real addition to the golden days of radio and TV.... Just one more of the great Italian American talents.

What a wonderful man
Watched Perry Comio since I was a baby. I had to wave good night back to.
Perry was the greatest. Also, Dean Martin, Bing, Nat King Cole, Burl Ives….they’re right up there, too!
Only. Are Lord will award this man , he will say will done my faithful servant
Very well-said, and thank you for saying it, but ****proofread****.
Always one of my favorites❤️👍🏼❤️
My favorite como song was prisoner of love!
Perry was also famous for never suffering from stage fright. He didn't understand what it was...
People say that Perry was so laid back ,he made Sinatra look like a nervous wreck .
He knew he could always go back to cutting hair.
@@normanpearson8753 I think that’s true!
As a budding singer back in the day, loved the guy, thought he had it, had a special unique style and when he went to Jesus very little was heard about it. I was amazed...
He was a class act❤️
Total class act, and he was a good man.
He belongs to my mother generation but i love his voice, his warmth , his heart , and he was a good human being, ❤❤ grat artist , music gifted with
Very well said!
There are too many. Perry Como was one of the very very best.
Pure Class simple as that, good Man, great singer, smooth voice, not a bum Like some of the others.
Nothing tragic about Perry Como , he had a happy marriage stuck to his faith and done well in his life, he was devastated when he lost his wife, and unfortunately ended up with Dementia wen he got old ,which happens to lots of people world wide.
my fvorite song of perry como is i want to give
CON AMORE !❤ 😍 💘 PARTECIPO AL SUO DOLORE! PERRY COMO PRESTIGIOSO ARTISTA DI TANTA BELLEZZA DI CANZONE ? DA UN ITALIO AMERICANO❤ GRAZIE X TANTA GIOIA 😂 IN MUSICA! MEDEA!
rip legend
Rest in Peace - Perry Como for all the wonderful music you shared with the world.
My mother loved him...ave Maria !
He did that song so beautifully.
Excellent narration. Thank you!
Agreed, he WAS the formerly known as “American Dream” . Absolutely hopeless now as our youth is being encouraged to “find” themselves through drugs, defiance and socialism. Mine included. Thank You Perry, I have at least something to hold to heart!
The best of the best.
He was such a cougar 😍
Perry was a cougar???? BAHAHAHA
My parents adored him.
.beautiful voice!!!! 🎉❤my song,, It's a possible,,!!!🎉love, love!! 😊😍💝🌻🌻🌻☀️🌈
Im 89 years old and remember Perry as the singer with the best spiritual character. He loved God and was faithful to Him, his wife and family. My favorite song he sang was " And I Love You So" as he was singing it to his God and to his wife. Life can be oh so lonely but not when you share a special love like he sang it.
Before Elvis, the Beatles, and rock and roll there was ….. Perry Como. Thanks for this Perry Como review video. I thought he was all about Hot Diggity but had no idea he despised that gimmick song, probably as much as I did.
He’s far better, more talented than the beetles ever were.
Great Man, great voice.
He was my father’s barber in Canonsbirg near Pittsburgh for a while.
Great performer!
I’m glad it wasn’t so tragic seems the tragic part is his best looking came after Geting white haired perfection
A Whole lot of Great singers over the last 80 years. The only other singer to me that had that Smooth delivery and “ honey” laden quality was Eddie Arnold. No one else I can think of sounded like either of these two Gentlemen.
Nat King Cole was, as well….Also, Jim Reeves.
Mambo Italiano my favorite song.
Wonderful tribute, Thank you.
The tragedy of being a kind and decent human being.
To me, he was the sexiest and lovely person that you saw on TV. I loved his duets with those he had as guests on his shows.
Thanks for sharing untold stories about Perry Como. One of my favorites. May his soul rest in peace now. watching frm Laguna,Philippines
I think one of my most favourite is: "It's Impossivle"!
i am sad to read that he died alone ,. where was his family , what singer god bless his soul
You can’t be with them every minute. Doesn’t mean they didn’t love him. My dad did not die alone, but he had 8 kids, 7 surviving at that time, and someone was always with him….for a couple of months. I was able to go back home and spend two weeks with my dad, but I had to go back to work. One of my brothers had to go back to work, my little sister also lived out of state, and she had to go back to work. It’s easy to say his family dropped the ball for him, but not really fair. Not everyone has six or seven siblings to share the load. We visited my dad each day, I drove my mother there. Someone was there at all times. My brother Tim and his wife stayed every night with Dad.
The best.
My father was a frustrated singer..we would be watching the Perry Como show together and dad would ask us" do I sound as good as Perry Como?" And of course all together us kids would chime "sure daddy you sure do"" 😉👍lol..
That’s kinda funny. I always thought my dear old dad had a great voice. I’d give anything to hear him sing again.
You portray such a grim image, as far as I know he was very successful and he had a beautiful voice and many great records... earlier recordings are even better
My Favourite song by Perry Como is what did Delaware, he's a lovely singer...
A voice like velvet never been able to be copied rip
Breda OKeefe. Yes - a warm, natural voice. It did you good to listen to him.
That,'s a great discription of his voice.
Oh, soooo devastating details!
I once had a dream I asked both my parents if Perry Como was my real father! They both nodded yes! Watched all the shows and the Christmas specials were my favorites.
Perry Como - Felt like family. Enjoy all his recordings there is one that was outstanding "Prisoner of Love". Martin Block the disc jockey would play it within a 15 minute segment from time to time. Rest in Peace Perry. Jesus is Love
I enjoyed this but have read he struggled with depression during his career.
Lots and LOTS of people do.
It’s IMPOSSIBLE
I liked this song too.
Ah yes, the song that brought me to his music as a teenager.
I love you Perry you will never be forgiven by Me
-forgotten?
He did not die alone in his chair, he was with family.
i LOVE, Love, loved him! i thought he was quite handsome and i was always trying to brush my Dad's hair like that 😂. It's good to know he was apparently as fine an individual as he appeared to be. ❤
That little town in PA is Canonsburg and I just left the McDonald's that basically has a shrine to him...interesting
Nice!
I don't think there are a lot of so called "tragic details" about Perry Como, he was married to the same woman for 65 years and was never involved in scandals etc, he was a lovely person and it came through in his singing.
I preferred Perry Como over Bing or Frank both singing and personal life. 🥰
100% agreed
Me too. He wasn't arrogant or flip.
I visited Perry's home in Canonsburg PA. At Christmas one year. His mother answered the door. It was the only house on the street fully decorated with Christmas lights. I asked why hadn't Perry built his mother a new home ? She answered that he offered, but this home was good enough, & It possessed many memories.
Actually, my most associated song sung by Perry Como is "Catch a Falling Star. As I even do tell on The Catch a Falling Star site itself. But please do check it out for yourself.
Tragedies..I think not..
He was a pretty good barber in his day.
Perry Como was one of the biggest stars of his era. I feel he was just as good as a Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett or Bing Crosby or all of the rest of those crooners. But I am sad to learn here that he slammed his novelty hit parade songs. That sounds sort of 'snobish' to me.
Robert Anderson: I disagree there! it showed he had innate good taste.
He did so many great records... My favorites by him (this week) would be "Far Away Place", "Wanted" and "Round and Round." I agree about him trashing his novelty hits; basically he's saying "I sang some garbage, you bought it, and I cashed the check." Still... one of the best of the '40s / '50s singers along with Nat King Cole and the great (but largely forgotten) Vaughn Monroe.
He was pushed to record those songs that he didn’t like, and no singer wants to be pushed to sing something they didn’t want to sing. That is not snobbish, it is human, and you wouldn’t want to be forced to sing something you didn’t like either. He was better than Frank or Tony, and just as good as Bing.
Hi & First
He died on my 16th birthday. I remember his daughter saying they didn't have a relationship because he was an asshole, also the reason why he couldn't find work and lost all his friends. He was found dead in his chair DAYS after he died because no one visited him.
I don’t remember ANY of that. I don’t believe that to be true. I think if it was, she wouldn’t have fought to have his wishes honored the way he had left them in writing. Everyone who knew him, said he was a good man, and if what you say is true, there would’ve at least been some to dispute the compliments he received by all. By the way, when he died, his daughter was interviewed. She said she’d spent a nice couple of hours with him & her son, just the day prior. She described it as “wonderful”. -that doesn’t sound like the words of someone who had no relationship with him, and called him an asshole. They clearly did visit him. He didn’t sit there for days, dead in his chair. He was literally found the very next day. Me thinks you have Perry Como confused with someone else.
There is nothing tragic about him.He was successful both personal and professional. I don't know why some are always holding his greatest successful songs against him. He didn't sing for critics but gor people and they obviously liked what they heard.Shall we be blamed too?I like nearly every song ,his novelty songs and the ballads. He could sing everything and that much better than others .🥰
I’m only here because his name was mentioned in the Twilight Zone episode “It’s a Good Life.” Lol ✌🏾👽✌🏾
Dang, are you really that pretty?
I wonder if any of Como's old barbershop customers are still alive.
Bobby Vinton may have been a customer. They were both from Canonsburg.
