The world's biggest boy band BTS will be abandoning their "army" of fans to join the South Korean military for national service, their agents have said.
The confirmation ends years of debate over whether the K-pop stars might be exempt from military duties.
In South Korea, all able-bodied men aged 18-28 must serve about two years.
The seven BTS members had been allowed to put off starting their military service until they turned 30.

I never really knew anything about S.Korea until BTS. We heard about N. Korea all the time. Then this band called BTS came on the scene, and I wanted to know everything about S.Korea. From the language, culture, food, history, the countryside and I wanted to visit the beautiful palaces. BTS has got me riding a bike, reading, traveling, taking risks and trying new things. It's all about living your best life.

bts bring 3.6 billion every year into the south korean economy, they are already serving their country to such a high degree!! but i am so proud of them to take this decision to cancel the postponement of their service and honour their country despite many high gov officials using them as puppets, controlling their art, and making them stay in the industry for the money it makes. it seems every day bts gives me a reason to be a proud fan- we will wait for them forever and wish them luck!!

The boys decided to enlist on their own terms and im proud of them to do so. Not letting anyone esp the government to decide for them. They decide to serve for the country for pride and respect and to stop any spiteful remarks on them despite their great contributions for their country. We will wait for them. 💜

they have done so much for Korea that they're considered a national treasure. But the most impact these boys have done were - they saved so many lives and touch so many hopeless teens and adults around the world through their impactful lyrics. Im 65 and they saved me.
Some people can also use their voice in a very bad way, to practice discrimination, to annoying the others, to disturb people, to pass the wrong information. It’s all about how they make judgement about the others. Some people may do it unconsciously, while others do it on purpose. Snapping around, just to fool you. It also a kind of manipulation, want you fail to let you down. Some people suffer selbst, won’t want the others to suffer in the same way, but some guys are not. If something is really in detail, try to destroy you, the only possibility will be a very experienced old man or a women. Young people saved old people’s lives, I just hope old people won’t do any bad things to the young generation, to any young families. Not behave like cold-blood animals or like running machines.
They saved all people of all ages that had an empty space in their hearts.💜

BTS is truly a class act - they handled the past few years of this neverending debate amongst politicans with such grace. Those politicians that used BTS's name to gain clout should be ashamed of themselves. I'm proud BTS won't have to owe the government or anyone anything 💜

BTS are not just a Pop Band. They debuted in 2013 as a Hip Hop Idol group, and they are amazing artists and humans. They don't hold to any one genre. ARMY's are proud of BTS and we fully support them and will wait for them to return from their military service. 💜

I don't underestimate bands who made history like Backstreat Boys, Boyzon, Boyz II Men, etc.... they're great in their own ways, but BTS just took it on another level of multitalent performance artists❣️💜

I'm not even surprised actually. I remember them saying they wanted to serve in the military. Jin had even his enlistment delayed, so it was a huge benefit for them.

While I believe they should be exempt, I also believe this is a chance to grow. Its what they talked about during Festa Dinner. They missed out on an important part of their childhood. @@kumut2632 No, hop over to Weverse and read the notice there. Jin will be the first to enlist, after he releases his single, but all the rest will follow. The implication is that once they wrap up their current solo activities, they'll enlist, rather than try to carry on as a partial group. The notice said the company and group look forward to hopefully completing their service and reconvening in 2025.

So sad, why NK insist about nucler issues? We can support BTS by watching their videos on KZhead, listening to the music on streamings, watching their concert on Disney, liking their pages on social media. BTS started out with nothing when they were just teenagers. They have accomplished a lot, carrying a message of hope and love that transcends gender or race. I feel so proud of them. I can't help but feel sad. They saved many ARMYs, they taught us to face life, and now with this announcement, BTS will never leave, but on the contrary, their achievements will continue to grow and get stronger. The Army will be in charge of maintaining this unbreakable bond... I will be strong, I will grow a lot to meet in 2025.
For any non-ARMY reading this please note: certain artists and athletes ARE given exemption, BTS was not going to be a one off. You did not make that clear in the story. The SK government have milked BTS enough, promoting tourism, promoting the language, promoting the world cup and world expo, promoting SK products and businesses to name but a few. Now leave them in peace to serve. We will be waiting.💜

Just a fyi, its not that you can ‘choose’ to go or not go for the military service in Korea, it is a ‘must’, you cant avoid it unless you are partially or fully disabled. BTS need to go now because they are reaching the maximum age limit that they need to go to the military by.
But it's not mandatory for women? Why atheletes are exempted?

For athletes, they will need to achieve a medal in olympics in order to skip the service, because if they achieve a medal, it is considered that it is more valuable for that player to spend the time training for his or her career as a national team

I totally agree with you that they contributed significantly to increasing the reputation of our country. However, if the government allows exemptions for people who contributed to spreading of korean culture and stuff, it would be impossible to draw a line in exact who can be excluded. Moreover, although they have achieved multiple awards, none of them are yet related governmentally, as it has been achieved through the title of a private company, not Korea. In that sense, the CEOs of samsung wouldn’t need to go for military too, and if you allow exclusions for those people, its against fairness

They have contribute so much to the country. The government should give them alternative service so BTS can go on using their unique position as global superstars to help foster good will to Korea--which will be a much greater contribution than the seven members will make spending two years doing military drills.
I will start by saying we ARMYs will wait and support BTS in all they do. I could not be more proud of them and their actions. They have always showed love and respect towards their home country. I just believe that they are not receiving the same respect that they give to everyone else. **BTS has provided BILLIONS of USD to the SK government. **They have been Ambassadors for the Culture and Tourism of Seoul, SK for 6 years. **They have spoken at the UN 3 times. **They served as Presidential Envoys for Future Generations to the UN. With diplomatic passports. **They spoke at the White House, with the President and News stations for Asian inclusion and stopping Asian hate. **Each of the members donate millions of Korean won to the hungry, education, health of children...(each million won = ~88,000 USD.) Theses donations also include international causes. **They brought in up to 4 million USD to UNICEF, to stop abuse, bullying and neglect of adolescents. ** They have brought awareness of the world to the mental health crisis of adolescents 10-18 yrs old. Including suicide being the #1 cause of death in SK. **BTS has taught people all around the world, of all ages, and ethnicities how to Love themselves so that you can love others fully. ** BTS continued to gather with the world online with concerts and vlogs when the pandemic hit, so that people could avoid depression and feeling isolated. **They provided a free concert to the world inorder to help SK to win the bid for 2030 Expo. 70M+ attended it online while 50-56,000 attended in person and up to 20,000 attended the live views in person. That is not even including the #s for the economic impact of all the foreigners that attended, rented hotel rooms, ate at restaurants, bought souvenirs, or paid for transportation. ** BTS has promoted the learning of Korean language and Hangul as well as Korean Culture. Through their songs and the way they dress in hanbok. **BTS has also won every award Nationally and Internationally including 2+ Grammy Nominations. And countless Billboard #1s. **They have 23+ Guiness Book of World Records, under their names. Must I continue... I am a 45yrs old BTS ARMY and have been so for the past 6 years. They helped me to find strength to survive 9 brain surgeries and to also survive the loss of my nursing career due to my disabilities. We ARMYs say that BTS and ARMY find each other when they are needed the most. And it is so true. I used to think that since I am American, then I don't have a say on what I think about how they are being treated by their own government. However, I have come to realize that BTS does good for the ENTIRE world and losing BTS won't just affect SK but it will affect the World. So we all have a right to speak up. Thank you for talking about this and the unfairness of it all. BTS deserves better from their own Country. What is so sad though is that BTS will never tell their country "no" because their whole career is about showing their pride in their country and doing what they can to protect the youth of South Korea. The government is only concerned about what they can get from BTS and making them "Dancing Dolls". What a shame. I will end it with a saying or two from ARMY and BTS.
