Adam Castillejo, The London Patient, is the 2nd person ever to be cured of HIV via bone marrow transplant. I was fortunate enough to get to sit down and have a chat with him about his story and what it's like to be cured of HIV.

My partner is currently out of the country for the next few months and I miss him terribly. I thought I would always be single because of hiv but there are ppl out there with an open mind who are also educated on hiv.

  • Hi Raif, This was a wonderful conversation with your guest Adam. I would like see a cure not just treatment. I was crying on and off through out the interview because I knew people in my 20's and early 30's in the 1990's and early 2000's who had HIV and or AIDS and did not understand at the time how difficult it was physically and the stigma and discrimination people went through. It didn't have much knowledge about it at the time. I was tested regularly when I was younger and was terrified at the time as I didn't know much about it at the time and coming out at that time in anyway was difficult. Alot has changed in some ways over the last say 20 to 30 years and certainly in the last 40 years. ❤️

I got Covid and was sick for a time. But...I won't bore you with all of that. The good news is that I have gained a friend who has become very, very dear to me. I thank God for him all the time. We have the most amazing conversations, and I don't feel so alone. i wish everyone could have someone like that in their life. Thanks for all you do to help others.

Now that I'm back I'm pushing for more content again so I hope we can connect more in the coming months! I've been living with HIV now just over 22 years and the thought of a possible cure to me actually... honestly I don't know how i feel about that any more.... is that weird? HIV was what forced me to grow up and be human again... start taking care of myself, eat well. exercise... go back to university etc.... so from that perspective it is kind of a positive (no pun intended) part of me... but it would be awesome not to have to take the meds and of course what it would mean for others of course would be amazing..

And yes, if someone undetectable has sex with someone with detectable HIV they may be able to catch new mutations in theory, but it would be very unlikely as the ARVs would protect them.
