  • Unreal. I'm been eyeing some cobolto calcite for the intense pink, but I think I might need to reconsider! This stone is lighting me up.

    • Well to be fair, rhodochrosite and calcite are close cousins, and in fact form a solid solution series. Calcite is Calcium Carbonate, CaCO3, while rhodochrosite is Manganese Carbonate, MnCO3. In between lies Manganoan Calcite, which is calcite with manganese. Cobolt Calcite however is calcite colored with trace cobalt, which is another color-inducing element.

  • First I really like the colours. Is it expensive? And is it hard to find? (in shops)

    • Yes it is very rare especially in complete Stalactite slices and crystalline form. These forms are expensive and hard to find in shops but you may be able to find polished freeform pieces in shops.

    • Geologically, it’s not too rare, mostly being found within hydrothermal deposits. However, most rhodochrosite in the world is pale or brown-tinted. Higher grade rhodo will be deep pinkish to reddish, with the purest rhodo being deep red. Rhodochrosite like the banded Argentinian material is pretty rare, and Argentina material is actually unique for rhodochrosite, with all the bandings and stalactites and such. However, actual facet/gem grade rhodochrosite is very rare, with three specific localities in Colorado (Sweet Home Mine), Peru (near Lima actually), and South Africa (the Manganese fields) having the best quality and most well known of the crystalline rhodos. It’s also not very hard to find in shops (especially Argentinian material), yet it is not cheap. Though by far the most common locality you will find in shops are from Argentina. In gem shows, last time I checked back in January, rough (Argentinian) rhodo was selling for about a dollar a gram! A good grade fist-sized Argentinian chunk was selling for a couple hundred bucks! The gem crystalline stuff like Sweet Home Mine, however, are on a whole other ball game, and sell for significantly more expensive! Singular well-formed rhombohedral rhodochrosite crystals from the Sweet Home mine can sell for hundreds to thousands of dollars depending on the crystal quality.
