  • I'm reading comments here that are like "I'm 13 is it too late for me to start learning ballet?" and I'm here like NO YOURE FINE.. I'm 18 and I'm starting my first dance class next week. It's never too late if it's something you're passionate about

    @jessy748@jessy7488 жыл бұрын
    • Yes, but you have to find a school that accepts you. My school told me I was way too old with 12 :/

      @MrsPinkmuffinify@MrsPinkmuffinify8 жыл бұрын
    • +Jessy B I think it's never to late. But obviously you can't be a professional if you start at 12 and you need to find a school that has a training program that suits the level and aspirations you want. Going to an elite level school as a beginner at 12 wont happen. Your local dance school however will probably work.

  • ballet doesn't get the credit it deserves. it's the most rigorous sport there is. and the amount of strength you have in your legs, core, arms, and ankles is ridiculous. ballerinas need to get more credit for what they do because it's not easy.

    • and what sucks is that in schools like mine, you can be exempted from sports if you do over 10 hours of sports a week and my friend does 14 hours of ballet a week but the school principal told her that “ballet isn’t a sport. It’s just a bunch of girls spinning in tutus” which is absolute bs

My friends used to get really mad when I couldn't go out because I had a ballet class but now they accept it. Last week I went to my friends' party and my best friend would go back home with me. I told her I had to go back home earlier because I had ballet class and she was absolutly fine with it.

A lot of people were laughing at us because they thought we were too old but we didn't care and I'm so happy now because ballet is awesome, even if you just do it as a hobby once a week. So you should never think you're too old for something, just try!

Misty Copeland just started ballet when she was thirteen and now she is a very successful principal ballerina with the American Ballet Theatre. Patricia Zhou started dancing at late 13, early 14 and ended up with the Royal Ballet at 17 years old.

  • I've been doing ballet for 11 years now. I only do it once a week and don't want to do it professionally. I just do it as a hobby because I like to let out all my feelings that kind of built up over the week and just dance. Ballet is a great way to do that, in my opinion. It's so simple and elegant, yet a lot of hard work. I've always wanted to be able to have more passion for ballet but since I started I was the worst in my class. I'm not flexible nor can I put on point shoes without my feet hurting after 2 minutes. But that doesn't stop me. I love ballet, even though I've been bullied because of it. It's apart of my life.

    @cherylcherry98@cherylcherry989 жыл бұрын
    • cherylcherry98 I can relate, I started ballet a year ago as a hobby and I only take an hour a week (I'd love more but in less than two years I'll be trying for university so I'm mostly studying right now). I am also the worst in my class X'D But it's a hobby and a fun way to challenge myself, so I try not to focus on my suck-iness (although I do try to get better, obviously :)).

It hurts bad at first I know but then it gets better. When I'm little Im the type you call chubby ;) but now I'm normal and flexible. All you have to do is believe yourself and love ballet with all your heart! ❤️

  • I envy people that have parents that support their dancing. My mum and dad will NEVER understand why I love dance so much and they are constantly putting me down for it. They are not like everyone else's parents; they are really old fashioned and want me to become something like a doctor or a lawyer even though that's not what I want. They never let me be myself or creative or anything, they are just constantly forcing me to do things I don't want to. They wouldn't even let me choose my own GCSE options. They never let me go out or do things i love. Dance was the one thing keeping me sane, and now I am not allowed to dance anymore.

    • Since I was a little child (that being 4 years old) I would always dream to be a ballerina and I wanted to go do it so much but my mom had experience in figure skating and didn't let me go to ballet just of the reason that she knows how stressful it was. I wnated to try it out and till this day 8 years later my passion for ballet is the same as it was when I was 4. I dance in my free time and teach myself ballet moves. Over the years I've realized that I won't be able to do ballet until later on in my life when in control. Maybe the passion will burn out? I also have a passion for singing and more modern dance. Such as hip hop. My mom is all up for hip hop but honestly I really want to go to ballet. I want to go so much. I hope one day she will let me though. Good luck for you and sorry for putting this here... I wish you the best ❤

  • I wish I could have been as passionate as these dancers when I took ballet, but I was always being picked on for my body type. I'm not fat by all means, but I'm super short and my boobs are way too big for ballet, and I often didn't get roles because of it. It really affected my confidence and I struggled with an eating disorder in an attempt to lose weight. Back in January I switched studios to one that focuses on jazz, hip hop, and contemporary. I'm so much happier and healthier now. My teacher and I have a similar body type. She's been begging me to join the competition team which wins a lot. When I see things like this though it makes me sad that I decided to quit ballet just because of my body.

    @brendaalvarez6775@brendaalvarez677510 жыл бұрын
    • Don't worry about the way you look. If you really love something you will continue to do it because its something you enjoy doing. If others put you down for your body type. Just ignore them. It really comes down to what you think of yourself. Now don't think of yourself like that. You will struggle at things you love if you don't believe in yourself. Be confident and pay attention to ballet not your body. Yes it is good to stay healthy. My body type is the exact same as yours but I don't focus on that and I am a lot more confident now that I really could care less You are your biggest critic and if you put yourself down for what you look like you will not succeed.

I'm a late starter so, I will never be able to audition for SAB (I am just starting pointe this summer, and I'm already 18yrs old, with two years ballet training) simply because of age. But, I have my eye on a few companies/schools, so it's not the end of the world. ;) Still, when you're 13 you are still growing up, basically until 18yrs you are trying to get used to your body. So, it's important to stay confident. Just know you tried your best at the end of every class, and you should be happy!

The level my age is at is too high for me, and my parents won't let me take those beginner classes for my age because they can't drop me off at the time I have to go to classes because it interferes with their schedule. I can't dance anymore!! :'(

  • I really love ballet but I don't have the 'body' for it and there aren't any ballet places nearby that have dance classes everyday, and my parents don't think I'll ever make it as a professional (which I probably won't). I'm 13 and started a year ago and everybody tells me I've progressed extremely quickly as I've never had any prior experience with ballet or dance in general (I have almost flat grand jetes, almost double pirouettes, jump high, and probably have half a year before I go on pointe). I hope I can do it

  • I'm really sad that my mother wouldn't alllow me to take classes back when I was five or six just because " but ballet is so girly and not even a real sport!". Which was merely the excuse for not letting me dance ballet because she herself didn't like it when she was a kid. I'm eighteen now and started this year and god, it's so fulfilling. I have to pay for everything myself - classes, shoes, clothes - and that means that I can only take one lesson of one hour per week. It's so very frustrating that my chances of ever becoming as good as I might be had I been dancing for twelve years are very very slim. I could easily see myself pursuing a serious career (dedication-wise) in ballet. How I wish things were different.

  • If one does ballet for the applause, then that is not the right motivation. Because if the applause doesn't come, one will be crestfallen, disappointed and even perhaps depressed. The right mindset is one does ballet because one is convinced it is an art form of a very high level, it demands so much on all levels; physically, emotionally and even philosophically. One loves ballet because one loves the challenge of highly exacting standards of excellence and because one is convinced that it is an art form second to none. And when you believe in that; you can take all the workouts, the repetitiveness of the exercises, the self criticisms you have to make for the sake of perfection and most of all you will be able to translate your role convincingly to the public, making them believe that you are Odile in Swan Lake, or Giselle, or Kitri in Don Quixote, the Faun in "L'apres midi.." or De Grieux in Manon. .

    • I couldn't have said this better. It is truly much deeper than what appears on the surface. I wish everyone understood ballet to this extent, because this is exactly what I try to explain to those who haven't had the blessing of ballet touch their lives.

    • I agree, you shouldn't be in it for "fame" or "making it big". You dance because there's something intriguing about the essence of ballet, making you want to try and master it (even though you never will). It's the movement that should drive you, not the applause. Strange these dancers at this level haven't noted that, except for Mimi, who later says she loves dance because she could express herself without having to use words because of a speech issue she had as a small child. Maybe that's why she got into NYCB (besides her fantastic dancing of course)? She saw a true meaning of dance. :)

    • I'm a dancer at the Boston Ballet school and I dance because it's something I feel. I can't hide it. It's there. I hate it when people say I'm going to compete because competitive dancers ages 8-14 usually only do a bunch of tricks and flips and turns when dance is so much more then that. It's not about the trophy or the cash or the fame. It's about the feeling you get when you get up on the stage, or touch that smooth barre in class, or jump and jump till your legs get tired but you do the best one and feel so good! I couldn't have said this better.

  • the biggest sacrifices I make as a 10 yrs old ballet student are far worse than giving my childhood. I give my life. I can't go to birthdays because I will eat cake. I can't sleep when I want. I can't play. I can't do any other sports so I have to sit out p.e.

  • this reminds me when I did ballet and tap but quit ballet and did strictly tap because this girl bullied me so hard but she followed me over to tap and as I was doing my little tap solo part rehearsals she pushed me offstage and I just quit overall. I ended up finding a large passion in soccer and track though in later years.

  • i never really enjoyed ballet because the strict technique and it was tedious, but i loved jazz because its more upbeat, and now that i'm training in various styles under hip hop so i evolved into more of a contemporary dancer. unfortunately now i'm recovering my ankle so i'm starting myself in ballet instead of jazz. i just wish i stayed in ballet instead of jazz, then i probably wouldn't have hurt myself. but then again everything happens for a reason and my life wouldn't be the way it is now with dancing. i don't know why i'm even typing this, but i guess it's because i felt like sharing it. ok i know i lame LOL bye

  • Im not really fond of dancing and I’m a gymnast but i already quit. Its good to know that dancing and sports take the same amount of practice and focus to really achieve your dreams because its not something that can be done and master easily without practice because even i practice for days in the gym for years. Watching this video feels good to know that not only a gymnast like me suffer from practice 😭😭 it takes a lot of motivation and determination to pursue something like that.

  • I love watching and doing ballet it's hard and it hurts but it is worth it. But I also love hip hop. I started dancing last year im 14 and it is never to late to start. last year I was at the top of my class in hip hop and I learned several tricks in one years time. If you want to dance never give up and its never to late to start
